exactly what I hoped it would be

Granted, I've only begun using this book, but already it's helping me a lot with my chem 101 class. I never took chemistry in high school, and I have to take basic chemistry for the degree program I'm in. Unfortunately, my professor (and the textbook he chose) assume you know a bit of chem from high school, which I don't. So far, this book has done an awesome job explaining concepts in a basic, plain english manner, which helps tremendously. I couldn't tell you whether or not it will help you with any courses beyond chem 101 stuff, but it's definitely been a huge help with the basics, and getting me up to speed with the rest of the class! And if you have an Android phone like I do, it's even better when you download the kindle version of the book, and can bring it with you to school, without having to lug two books around for just one class!

No good sorry

I'm sorry, I bought 3 books, chemistry homework helper it gets an A. This book gets a C and solving all chemistry word problems gets a D.

I was hoping this would cover stoicheometry more but it has not. If you have an iPad iPhone or iPod touch. Look at an app called chem pro it has 32 hrs of video lecture, and while I might not agree with all his ways of solving problems, it has served me much better than this book at 1/2 the price.

A good reference for Calculus I, not so much for Calc II

The best way I can describe this book is a hybrid. It will present the formulas to you as you see them in the text book, then tries to actually explain what they mean (unlike a lot of textbooks) and give examples of how to apply them. The authors try to give a blend of real life and humorous examples as opposed to the formal ones you are going to get in a textbook. A word of caution though. While it does go in to some of the integration techniques, and goes through the technical definition of the integral, it omits things like the disk and washer method for finding volumes using integrals, which are some of the trickiest material in Calc II. Ultimately whether you are going to learn well from this will depend on your learning style. Some people need the interaction with a tutor, some can watch recorded lectures (if that is you I suggest Jason Gibson's math tutor DVD series which you can find on here) and some can learn from a book. In that way how useful this will be for you is subjective. I can tell you that I found it very useful for the information it does cover, and found the explanations better than what was in my textbook. It is not a problems repository though. If you are looking for a book with just a lot of solved problems this will not be for you.

If you are totally lost, this is your book

This book is for the totally lost. It does a very good job of putting Calculus in reach of those who are not strong in math. Especially high school students and adult learners.

Calculus textbooks are not very student friendly, there are a few which are, but most are not. This book provides an entertaining overview of the various topics. In some cases they use exactly the same metaphors that are used in most Calculus books; however, they are more engaging.

I don't totally agree this will help you ace Calculus, but it will help the student who is lost or can't seem to click with the textbooks.

There are several elements that would make the superb. Like exercises for the student, and more worked examples.

They do provide alot of good advice on areas that will hurt you on a test. The one thing I wish they did was provided coverage of some precalc issues. They touch on it briefly in the beginning of the book, but it would be more useful if they iterated through all of the common algebra issues. ( alot of the Calculus helper books do this, and it is very helpful ).

This book is not for someone who understands the concepts, but simply has issues with solving the exercises. For that I would choose something else that is more instructive and has exercises. ( like Gootman or Klien ).

Fails to deliver, but makes up for it with the goat jokes

I'm divided on this book. On the one hand, you're never gonna laugh as hard (or at all, even) with any other book on the subject of calculus. It's as non-threatening and light an introduction on the matter as possible, and gives some good insights too. However, you shouldn't expect to ace anything with this volume alone, which means it fails to deliver its premise, and I should only give it three stars. Still, it was a very fun read, and for that I'll give it four.
Why can't you ace anything with this? Well, it has too few examples, no exercises, and actually fails to give you some essential pointers that Calculus for Dummies does give! Sometimes, it feels as if the humor got in the way of the actual teaching. On the other hand, it's fun enough to be read for the sake of reading it, which might coax even the laziest student out there to actually try and learn something ;)

Joseph Boyden's first novel is the story of two Cree friends, Xavier and Elijah, who leave their pristine northern country to end up in the horrific trenches of World War I. Loosely based on the real life of a famous Canadian sniper, the story is told from two first-person views: those of Xavier and his old aunt and only living relative, Niska. After the war, Niska is taking her wounded nephew back home north to the bush in a canoe. Their trip is the three-day road of the title, which also refers to the journey taken after death. The story of the war is told in flashbacks on this journey as Xavier recovers from morphine addiction. Niska also relates various stories to Xavier, believing there is "medicine in the tale."

Boyden is a natural storyteller. Both the Native tales of the north and the grim accounts of the war in France and Belgium have the ring of truth. His images can be subtly appropriate--raiders who go over the top are "eaten by the night"--and his characterizations are excellent, especially the three main players and Xavier's Canadian trenchmates. Eventually, Elijah seems to feed on the death all around him, becoming a "windigo," while Xavier begins to question the sanity of the war and his friend's growing madness, realizing "we all fight on two fronts, the one facing the enemy, the one facing what we do to the enemy." This first novel is set in Canada and Europe during the First World War. When Xavier, a Cree boy raised on a reserve, enlists in the army with his friend Elijah, the boys abruptly enter a modern world in which their ethnic appearance is a signal to others that they are to be treated differently. Even as the boys become expert marksmen, they are ostracized by their comrades. Xavier reacts by turning inward, grappling with the meaning of the war and with guilt over the killing he has done; Elijah, meanwhile, turns outward, becomes consumed with killing, and dedicates himself to being the world's best sniper. Loosely based on the life of Francis Pegamahgabow, a real-life World War I sniper, this is a delicately written, almost poetic novel. Neither pro- nor antiwar, it posits that war is something that will always exist, and all we can control is our own place in it. Ultimately, Boyden writes about life, not war. The novel can be very slow moving, but it will prove rewarding for patient readers. David Pitt

Unforgettable

I read The Orenda by Joseph Boyden and was so captivated by his writing style that I immediately ordered Three Day Road. In the same way that The Orenda sucked me into the story with it's details of life in a Huron village in the 1600's, Three Day Road let me experience life in the trenches of WWI. It was shocking, frightening and ultimately unforgettable to read what men suffered in this war. From the frequent rain producing deep mud to struggle through, boots that never dried and trench foot to the constant wet, woolen uniforms infested with lice, Boyden's ability to describe the misery and discomfort these soldiers dealt with every day was so powerful. The loss of innocence, the loss of sanity, the loss of life and friendship - all of these are described in vivid details through the eyes of Xavier, a young Cree soldier who has enlisted with his friend Elijah to fight in a Canadian regiment. Xavier and Elijah become snipers based on their excellent marksmanship from years of living in the Canadian bush. The book begins in Northern Ontario as a very damaged Xavier returns from the Front with extreme physical and psychological damage to deal with. The chapters alternate from the perspective of Xavier and his Aunt Niska, A Cree medicine woman who wishes to ease Xavier's mind and heal his body. I cannot give you more details, but I can highly recommend this book. It is a serious and powerful read that reinforces the price young men face in war and the great debt all of society owes them when they return.

Remarkable First Novel

“Three Day Road” is Boyden’s first novel, a remarkable tale of two young Cree Indians from Canada who experience the horrors and brutality of trench warfare during WWI. Best friends Xavier Bird and Elijah Whiskeyjack use the craft they learned hunting in the area around Hudson Bay to become sharpshooters. Elijah is flamboyant, while Xavier is reserved. Elijah racks up an astonishing number of kill, but becomes a morphine addict while walking a fine line between heroism and murder. A parallel story line tells of Niska, Xavier's aunt, a Cree medicine woman who chose to live by her wits in the woods rather than enter the reservation. Her story, told as she paddles her wounded nephew back home after the war is over, tells of the sad decline of Cree culture. Boyden vividly portrays the chaos, fear, discomfort and courage of the soldiers who found themselves in the trenches of the Western Front. He proves to be a gifted storyteller.

Simply Remarkable

When I got this book I did not read the description closely and thought this would be about a travel through the Canadian wilderness. However the story was predominantly about WWI, with a bit of the Canadian wilderness.

I do not often read books about war, but this book was phenomenal. The horrific images of a terrible time and place told in an unflinching manner. Eloquent, exceptional and near perfect.

This is not a page turner, rather a slow read that wants the read to absorb every word.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough and feel the mere 5 stars cannot communicate the power of this novel.

About the Author
Dr. Md. Abdus Salam�- obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering, in 2000 from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Currently, he is working as a Faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at the Institute Technology Brunei (A Technology University), Negara Brunei Darussalam. His research interests include power system modelling for on-line control, insulator pollution studies, grounding systems and renewable energy. He has published a large number of referred journal and conference papers. About the Author
Chris Hadfield is one of the most seasoned and accomplished astronauts in the world. In May, Hadfield returned to Earth after serving as Commander of the International Space Station, where he and his crew lived for six months (it was his third trip). The top graduate of the U.S. Air Force test pilot school in 1988 and U.S. Navy test pilot of the year in 1991, Hadfield was selected to be an astronaut in 1992. He served as Director of NASA Operations in Star City, Russia from 2001-2003, Chief of Robotics at the Johnson Space Center in Houston from 2003-2006 and Chief of International Space Station Operations there from 2006-2008. The former President of the Association of Space Explorers (2007-2011), Hadfield is also a fully qualified flight engineer cosmonaut, is fluent in Russian, and is designated a "specialist" on "all" Space Station systems, meaning that he has earned the highest qualification level possible for every imaginable task onboard.

warning: do not start this book if you have anything pressing to do in the next 6 hours

This is not a typical memoir-- it's not organized chronologically, from childhood to the present day. Instead of following a linear time line, Col. Hadfield uses his experiences to illustrate larger points and themes, which makes the book much more compelling and readable than the usual celebrity memoir. (Of course, the guy isn't your usual celebrity, either -- he's famous for actually having DONE something.) For instance, there's a whole chapter on the power of negative thinking and how that has helped him "neutralize" his own fear. He's not telling you how to live your life, only how he's lived his, but the book forces you to ask certain questions of yourself, while the narrative powers along at a fast clip because his life has just been so damned interesting and unusual. There's a lot more to him than was evident on Twitter, starting with a dry sense of humor. I inhaled this book and came away from it not just entertained but thinking in a slightly different way about life, the universe and everything. Highly recommended.

Not your average autobiography

I'm a Chris Hadfield fan - I will admit that first up. I bought this because of that initially. However, it was absolutely not what I was thinking it would be. Part motivational, part life lessons, part autobiography, this book is eminently readable and written in easy to read language and easy to digest sentences.

Hadfield gets his message across telling the story of his career as an Astronaut - and what he did to get there. I have to say that from this, now I am absolutely a fan of his wife, who must surely be the most supportive woman around!

Humour flows through the book, but he doesn't gloss over how dangerous situations he has been in were, nor does he gloss over the pain of loosing friends in space missions.

This book will appeal to a wide range of people - from those who want to know what being an astronaut is like (and your eyes will be opened wide - I know mine were) to those looking for a creed to live their life by.

If you enjoyed Chris Hadfield's tweets and reports from the ISS, then I can guarantee you will enjoy this book. There are a heap of photos at the back of the kindle edition of the book (instead of scattered through it) - so don't assume that the last chapter is the end of the book!

The luckiest people off Earth -- and the lucky readers still on it

If I’d ever get to go to space, Col. Chris Hadfield is the human I’d want to go with. But as this is not quite likely to ever happen (the orbital mechanics of my life seems to have placed me on a different trajectory), reading his book “An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth” is probably my best, realistic option to go for a journey with Commander Hadfield.
And what a journey it is! The genre is a familiar one, the combination of an intimate, personal voyage with a grand story of human exploration. People have been at this, and able to write their memoirs, for centuries already. This terrain is thus a familiar one: yet Hadfield – of course – takes us to places where few have reached so far, and even fewer have written about in such a touching way: sincere, funny, and humble.

Humbly, I consider myself a very lucky human being to be living at a time when the story of such an off-Earth expedition can be written – and that I had a chance to read it. I’m a lucky person, on Earth.
When the book’s part III (“Coming Down to Earth”) finally started to exert its gravity, I’ve tried to linger on for another orbit or two, by considerably slowing down my pace of reading. It’s hard to let go of this book: Hadfield not only commanded the ISS, but also the skills of a gifted storyteller.
And, of course, a singer. Thank you, Chris Hadfield.

Good for younger fans

This is written for the more casual or younger fan. It includes some decent diagrams, and SOME good background info, but really misses the chance to create some good background detail. For example, any astute fan knows there are significant differences between the E-11 balusters used by the stormtroopers in the OT films, but this book doesn't mention that at all. The included drawing ONLY includes a dawning of the blaster as used in ROTJ. Similar situations exist for the DL-44 blaster... One of the most iconic weapons of the whole Star Wars saga. Yeah, it's super nerd detail, but that's who should benefit from a book like this.

The revised version of the Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology builds on the success of the original, adding in color 3D renderings of selected weapons and technologies, adding updated information from Episodes 1-3 and more recent novels. For Star Wars fans, there is a broad array of new general information to fill in where the previous version left off. Unfortunately, this update comes with less detailed schematics, typographical errors, and a feeling of adequacy in the place of the satisfaction that a Star Wars nerd/junkie/enthusiast would expect from such a publication. Recommended audience would be new gen SW fans and moderate fans that want to know more about the SW universe.

Now I know why everyone thought the Death Star's thermal exhaust port was in it's equatorial trench, despite the movie clearly showing it was NOT there. This is the book that created that false perception. Fun to flip through otherwise, but when I saw that error my eye twitched a little.

Aliens are not always friendly!

This is a very short read, but an excellent one! Two ships, one filled with colonists from Earth, arrive at the planet they intend to colonize only to find two enormous pillars that extend far beyond sight. The scientists and military go down to check things out and lose contact with the ship carrying the colonists. They send a military party up to find out what happened - and they find far more than they expected - or wanted - to find! I'll be watching for more books by Geoff Lichy. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review. That, however, did not affect my review of the book at all - it was a great short story!

Well written! Engrossing!

The writing is excellent. The story is excellent. I was reminded of my favorite Science Fiction authors, Piers Anthony and Asimov, as I read it. I was given the privilege of reading this short story for free, so that I could give it an honest review. There are elements in the story that draw you in and keep you there.
I gave it 4 stars because of how it ends. It dropped me off in a sad familiar place, and reminded me of the confusing end of a beloved television show, "Haven". The entire very well written story, flopped at the end. It was so real of a let down that I read the last two pages four times...hence the 4 stars.
I would read this again, if the author chose to turn it into a novel, its just that good.

With these words, in The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer gave powerful voice to the millions of Christians who believe personal sacrifice is an essential component of faith. Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor and theologian, was an exemplar of sacrificial faith: he opposed the Nazis from the first and was eventually imprisoned in Buchenwald and hung by the Gestapo in 1945. The Cost of Discipleship, first published in German in 1937, was Bonhoeffer's answer to the questions, "What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us to-day?" Without a doubt, the book that has most changed my life is Dietrich Bonhoeffer's The Cost of Discipleship. It is incredible. I first read it at Bible college and then read it again three years ago. Bonhoeffer writes about cheap grace - how we can make the gospel what people want to hear so that we get a bigger response- and how we must fight against that. As an evangelist, I can sometimes feel the temptation to give a softer message to get more people responding, but actually we need to be true to the message that belongs to God. Revisiting the Sermon on the Mount

Being a believer for over 30 years, I have read innumerable books which are related to discipleship and spiritual growth. I would count this as one of the most important; as borne out by the overall importance given to this 20th century classic.

Speaking as a man who truly lived out his faith under the worst of circumstances, Dietrich Bonhoeffer does so with a mantle of authority. The bulk of The Cost of Discipleship is devoted to reclaiming the rightful authority of the Sermon on the Mount, and by extension, the teaching of the Gospels, in the life of the believer.

Throughout Christianity today, the Sermon on the Mount is often presented in a certain context; that is, that it was given under the dispensation of the Old Testament prior to the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. The purpose was not so much to instruct Christian living, but in its extremity to reveal the utter hopelessness to live it out, and hence to point the sinner to the cross of Christ to receive forgiveness in Him. While this is partially true, Bonhoeffer's argument is that believers are no less bound to take the Sermon on the Mount and the Gospels to heart to live them out every moment of every day to the greatest extent possible.

Bonhoeffer distinguishes between easy grace and costly grace--easy grace being the belief that, because Christ has paid for our sins on the cross, which He has, that the believer need no longer be overly concerned with conforming His life to the hard sayings of Jesus in the Gospels; on the contrary, costly grace, by virtue of our understanding of what it cost Christ, should motivate us even further to go further in Christ and to live out.a life which is worthy of what has been given to us.

I would particularly recommend this to believers who have been in the faith for a while; for whom perhaps the Sermon on the Mount and the New Testament teachings of Jesus in the Gospel have perhaps become "old hat." Such believers will be challenged afresh to measure their lives and fruit against the standard of Christ.

Every American Christian show read this book and take what ...

Every American Christian should read this book and take what it says to heart. Unlike a lot of modern theological books that are written by people sitting in air conditioned offices that have never paid a price for their belief in Jesus, this book was written by a man that eventually and voluntarily gave up his life for the cause of Christ. As a person, who myself has faced persecution and arrest in anti-christ countries as a missionary, I can attest to the validity of the core message of this book.

The idea that God loves you too much to let you suffer, is about the most blasphemous and false doctrine to ever permeate the Christian church. It is especially rampant in the United States of America where preachers preach the false doctrine of self gratification, self indulgent Christianity where God is reduced to genie in a bottle that you can rub with the write words (faith formulas) and get anything you want. Where salvation and lavish prosperity is taught as a birthright because you were lucky enough to be born in the the country of America, and because of this God loves you more then any other race in the world and would never consider letting you suffer even the slightest bit.

The Cost of Discipleship will open your eyes to the truth about what is necessary to truly follow the "real" God of the Bible. An omniscient, omnipotent creator who deserves to be worshiped and served. A God who deserves to be followed by His creation that loves Him above all else and trust Him and respects His decrees more then their own opinions, culture or traditions. A God who requires His followers to honor Him as King in their lives and to be patriotic to His kingdom more then their own countries.

How theologically Bonhoeffer could refuse the law of “the world”, the Nazis laws

Fortunately, I could finally finished reading this book, which is called one of the most important theological books of the 20c, and a modern theological classic. It required approximately two months for me to finish because of my English ability and theological knowledge, but needless to say it was worth the time and cost to examine.

Even in the terrible oppression under the Nazi German government, Dietrich Bonhoeffer did not give up his faith with no fear of being killed. He is apprised as an “Apostle of the modern era” and a “defender of Western civilization”. Through this book, I had been kept seeking his core theological source of conviction which enabled him to keep his faith so resiliently: Unfortunately, the conviction lead him to his death of the young age 39. From this book, I could successfully recognize Bonhoeffer’s rigid ideological foundation that made it possible for him to be killed by a capital death of hanging, as a martyr. I found that he thought it is not only the Christian’s right but duty to protest the government which is against God’s law, righteousness or providence.

Needless to say, on the premise that he was a Lutheran pastor, his logic and ethics are elaborated with these words such as “only the Bible”, “Grace alone”, “faith alone”, “the mystery of Incarnation”, and the “theology of Cross”. However, I paid attention to the logical point that how theologically he could make possible to refuse the law of “the world”, the law “on the earth”. Even though those laws and the Nazi government itself had occurred legally in a democratic regime and had legitimacy, he could deny it because of the reason that God’s law is superior to laws “on the earth”.

Bonhoeffer proved theologically the superiority of God’s law than the law of the world with criticism on “leagalism”, the concept of Christ as a “Mediator”, criticism on the Reformers who justify and admits nations’ the right of revenge, criticism on some Protestant denomination who has theology that confuse Christ’s love and patriotism (p.152). Bonhoeffer’s theology depends on fine exegesis or interpretation of scriptures. In fact, we can find at least some evidence that his theology is breaching Lutheran authentic “doctrine of two kingdoms”, i.e. the mutual non-aggression between religion and states. Although it would not be completely denied the doctrine of separation of religion and states, we are able to recognize these phrases as a clue to breach the doctrine: For instance, “The law must be broken for the sake of Jesus; it forfeits all rights if it acts as a barrier to discipleship (p.61)”, Bonhoeffer wrote, “No law of the world can interfere with this fellowship (p.257)”, “They live their own life under alien rulers and alien laws (p.296)”, “Jesus, the champion of the true law, must suffer at the hands of the champions of the false law (p.121)”. From this point of view, we can find the reason of “the evil law is not a law”, in other words, he breached the dogma that “a law is a law, however undesirable it may be”. Laws on the earth are valid only if those are not against the will of Jesus, that is to say God’s law. Jesus “alone understands the nature of the law as God’s law (p.122)”. Apparently this logic is the base what enables Bonhoeffer to protest Nazi Germany and its laws.

Then, if that is the case, on what ethical ground or virtue should we human beings live “in the world”. In Bonhoeffer’s theology, the corner stone of ethics is based on the Lutheran notion of “Pecca fortiter”, i.e. Sin Boldly: Human beings must recognize deeply his weakness, incompleteness, and sinfulness, and then we may be compensated if we completely rely on Omnipotent Father God and Christ as the Mediator. According to Bonhoeffer, Christians need to follow Jesus’ life and death, and to obey his teaching, that means realization of God’s Word. And they should put “beatitudes” into practice in “the Body of Christ” namely in the Church, in the Christian community.

When Christians take the Sermon on the mount into practice, they need to be the Beatitudes; the poor, the person who mourn, the meek, the person who suffer from hunger and thirst, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peace makers, the person who are persecuted for righteous sake. Only through this practice, they can become disciples of Christ. If they could practice, simply to do this discipleship on the world, i.e. in daily life, with love of fellowship, they could be “salt of the earth” and they could be able to express their extraordinariness or peculiarity without intention. Bonhoeffer argues that this extraordinariness is the realization of the law of God, and Christian peculiarity will come out in their proclamation, which means manifest of God’s law. The righteousness of God can never be contributed back to “Justica Civils” i.e. laws of citizen, and therefore Christians shall be persecuted as strangers in the secular world. Nevertheless, just in the midst of the persecution, Christians must show the divinity of the righteousness of God. Therefore he wrote it down not only once that the death in martyrdom is the supreme grace for Christians who follows Jesus’ life and want to be imitative of Jesus’ death on the Cross.

From above, we can confirm the base conceptions of Dietrich Bonhoeffer: First, for Christian, God’s law exceeds law on the world. Second, Christians are separated from the secular world and must show their divinity and extraordinariness in the daily life by practicing beatitudes. Third, the death of s martyr is the supreme gift which a few of Christians are given. I guess if he had not these theological conceptions, Bonhoeffer could not get the triumph of martyrdom under the cruel Nazi government.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born in 1906. He learned theology in Tuebingen University and became a lecturer of the University of Berlin when he was only 24 years old. Then he studied at the Union theological Seminary in New York. Reckless of danger, in 1935 he started protesting against the German Christian Movement that spread rapidly in Germany together with the prosperity of Nazional Sozialisms. He accused it as an Antichrist ideology. He reported to his friends in Britain and the US the truth and facts of German Church Struggle between the Deutchen Kristen and the Confession Church, and as a leader of the Confession Church movement, he also taught underground at an illegal Church Training College. When the assassination plan for Adolf Hitler comes to surface, Bonhoeffer was arrested by Gestapo, as one of the suspects on April 5th in 1943. On April 9th in 1945, he was killed by hanging through SS chief Heinlich Himmler’s order. It was only few weeks before the day when Berlin was freed by the Soviet Union Red Army.
