Excellent Stone On Which To Sharpen Your Brain

Mate this volume with "Solaris Performance and Tools", grab a few dumps and you will rule the Solaris universe.

Only one thing could be better - the close proximity and availability of the previous Solaris Internals book, as the depth of discussion and explanatory diagrams are occasionally a bit better in the earlier book even though it covers only release 7 through 9.

System programmers really must have this book. If you want to get the best from you machines you really must understand how DTRACE can make your life streets better than it is and that requires this book, eventually.

A concise book on Internals

This book has helped me immensely to understand what is happening 'behind the scenes' not only in Solaris-based systems, but also for systems such as FreeBSD.

Over the past several years, I have become more and more curious about all the technology which has become available in FreeBSD which originates from Solaris: for example, ZFS, Boot Environments (the beadm command), DTrace, along with other subtler technologies which have close analogues in FreeBSD and Unix in general. To the last point, this book will help you understand how a true Unix-based system works if you will put some time into it. I enjoy skipping around to different sections, and comparing the Solaris implementation to my other trusty book "The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD..."

Having also previously looked at the O'reilly book, "Understanding the Linux Kernel", I have to say the writing and organization in Solaris Internals is much more straightforward to understand. I think it a great advantage that the authors of this book thoroughly bring their working knowledge of Solaris to the rest of us.

The Canonical Solaris Reference

This book should be in the library of any serious Solaris administrator. It is not a book for beginners, but it is well-organized and well-explained. The authors went to a great deal of trouble to clean up the parts of the original edition that were not as easily understood, and their effort shows.

The examples are clear and well-explained, and the information is indexed and cross-referenced in a way that makes it easy to follow threads across chapters.

The authors of this book have been extraordinarily generous with their time and energy. Jim Mauro was very encouraging and helpful in explaining topics which found their way onto my web site and into my book. The entire community owes these gentlemen a debt of gratitude for their professionalism and their generosity.

Exploring good books

The book is a bit cornered but besides that the book seems free of damage. Came in the time expected, and price wise was hardly a tenth of other prices I found. ($10 compared to as high as $117 on my college's site) All in all, if you need this book for a class, this will probably be the best deal you'll find for it.

Better than many

This was a required text for a college course. What I always want to know before purchasing a textbook is what EDITION is it? First ed.? 4th? 8th? Anytime a seller puts a textbook up for sale the EDITION of the book they're selling is the most important detail, which is usually not given by most sellers! The sellers need to educate themselves on this small issue. I find it amazing that most sellers do not know they will be skipped over for consideration without the "edition" information. In this case it was given to me by the seller and that is the main reason I purchased it from that seller. I knew I was getting the right edition according to the requirements of the course taken. The book was used, but in very good condition. I saved 50% on the cost of a new book, and it was delivered on time. Also, the seller's price was, of course, far more fair than my school's bookstore, and far more fair than any other Amazon seller's asking price for the same used edition.

This is a great psychology book! David Meyers really is a great author. He explains everything in ways that is easy to understand. There are so many pictures and illustrations to help visualize things. He also has many funny comics that I couldn't wait to read in each section. I had rented this book at the time but love it so much I'm thinking about purchasing it.

A Vibrant Book by a Vibrant Man

I could not put this book down. Actually, I bought it on Kindle first, but I have since ordered a hard copy for my library.

This is a vibrant book by a vibrant man (although he did have help from a ghost writer). He lead a remarkable devil-may-care life, but under the surface, he had the soul of a writer and a desire to do more with his sharp intellect. But drinking dulls the wit and robs ambition. I have since read his published novels and he is quite a talented story-teller. In the films preceding his death, he shows his potential for becoming a serious character actor of high caliber. Who knows what fine things he may have written or what complex roles he may acted had he lived longer and with fewer demons?

Truly an incredibly gifted individual, and, despite his matinee idol status, one who was greatly under-appreciated in his own time both for his acting and his writing, Few have ever had his compelling presence on film, nor the vigor and joie de vivre that fairly leap out at you, especially in his earlier films.

Flynn died 4 months before I was even born, but as I have gotten to know him through his words and his films, I find myself mourning the loss of one who Olivia deHavilland once called "a beautiful man," and the life so tragically cut short by his own excesses. His last recorded words were, "I've had a hell of a life and I don't regret a single moment of it." And I've had a hell of a time watching it all unfold in his movies, novels and now, his autobiography. Rest in peace, Mr. Flynn. Although, knowing him, he is in heaven carousing with the archangels. Or, maybe sword-fighting with the Devil himself.

You won't be able to put it down

This is probably the most enjoyable book I've ever read. Really. Mr. Flynn tells us the story of a life filled with adventure, emotional intensity, and humor. He also manages to convey the grittiness and desperation of his life at times, but he tells it all with dignity and style.

He has the ability to write so that you can see it all, in your mind's eye, as if you were right there along with him. More importantly, as he takes you on his journey, he moves you to feel what he was feeling when it was happening to him.

Want to go a step further? You can really go with him to Mandarin House, in Macau, China, where he gambled with a girl named Ting Ling. Just Google "Mandarin House". Want to see the hotel where Lili, his mad wife, threw a flower pot off the balcony at him on the street below? Google the "Plaza Athenee", in Paris. It looks like a nice place, with wide balconies, full of flower pots.

I especially liked the part in the book where, as a young man, he meets his life long friend Hermann, and they go from New Guinea to London on cargo ships, trains, and anything that will get them closer to their destination. Along the way they get rich, and become penniless, over and over again.

Another thing that makes this book a joy to read is that Flynn is a man of consciences, who does unconscionable things to survive. He was able to adapt to the circumstances he found himself in very well.

He was a man who lived life without limits, but that takes a toll.

When he died at age fifty, he had the body of an eighty year old man.

So, who was Errol Flynn?

He was a lovable little boy who was unloved and abused badly. He worked very hard to make of himself a successful and respectable man, but success slipped through his fingers, and he was ashamed of himself. When he was making Robin Hood he was a stunning figure of a man in good health and vigor, but he kept passing out on the set because of his many health problems. Women fell at his feet because of his looks and charm and stardom, but he was afraid of women because they destroyed his life. When everyone thought he was on top of the world, rich, and surrounded by beautiful women who adored him, he was really only sitting alone on the edge of his bed in the dark, with the muzzle of a revolver in his mouth. He was one of the most sophisticated men the world has ever seen, but he had the heart of a child.

He describes himself as "a desperate and hard man doing what he had to, to get on". I'll take him at his word on that.

The complexity of this poor damaged men, his good luck and terrible misfortune, and the extreme adventures he lived, make him a rare and awe-inspiring individual. In his wake he leaves behind the story of an amazing life.

Read it.

One of the very BEST autobiographies I've ever read. The adventures, action, humor and tragedies depict Mr. Flynn's incredible life which was actually more exciting off screen than in many of his terrific movies. A MUST read for any fan of Mr. Flynn and after the read you will be more impressed with who he really was and his accomplishments that no one could know without reading his extremely well-written bio!!

The book appears to cover the basic points to be made about property management but could contain more critical detail.

It was not purchased for a class but to learn if it had specifics about management of condomimiums and outsourced management companies. It did not mention details about the relationship between the owners, their boards and the management companies such as mandatory audits, fiduciary considerations, education of board members, etc. Typically, the owners/boards abdicate total management to outsourced companies and this should be mentioned and ways of board control and awareness should be mentioned. This alterting could be done in just a few paragraphs.

Other well known books have been consulted. They also fail in this regard.

Great book on property managment.

very solid book on Property management. Doesn't go into the miniscule day to day details, but gives a budding property manager a good overview of how to manage real estate. It's been a great resource for our company.

About the Author

Shari Lawrence Pfleeger (Ph.D., Information Technology and Engineering, George Mason University; M.S., Planning, The Pennsylvania State University; M.A., Mathematics, The Pennsylvania State University; B.A., Mathematics with high honors, Harpur College, Binghamton, NY) is a senior researcher at RAND’s Arlington, VA office where she helps organizations and government agencies understand whether and how information technology supports their mission and goals.  Dr. Pfleeger began her career as a mathematician and then a software developer and maintainer for real-time, business-critical software systems. From 1982 to 2002, Dr. Pfleeger was president of Systems/Software, Inc., a consultancy specializing in software engineering and technology. From 1997 to 2000, she was also a visiting professor at the University of Maryland's computer science department. In the past, she was founder and director of Howard University's Center for Research in Evaluating Software Technology (CREST), and was a visiting scientist at the City University (London) Centre for Software Reliability, principal scientist at MITRE Corporation's Software Engineering Center, and manager of the measurement program at the Contel Technology Center (named by the Software Engineering Institute as one of the best such programs in the country). Dr. Pfleeger is well-known for her work in software quality, software assurance, and empirical studies of software engineering; she is particularly known for her multi-disciplinary approach to solving information technology problems.

 

She is also well-known for her publications, many of which are required reading in software engineering curricula, including "Software Engineering: Theory and Practice" (3rd edition, with Joanne Atlee, 2005, Prentice Hall), "Security in Computing" (3rd edition, with Charles P. Joanne M. Atlee is an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. Her research program focuses on software modeling, documentation, and analysis, with a particular emphasis on what she calls practical formalisms:  specification and design notations that are practitioner-friendly but have a precise semantics suitable for automated analysis.  More recently, she has been working on configurable model-driven development, whereby modeling notations, analysis tools, and code generators can be configured via semantics parameters.

 

Atlee was the founding Director of Waterloo’s Software Engineering degree program. She served on the Steering Committee for the Computing Curricula Software Engineering volume, co-sponsored by IEEE-CS and ACM.  She is the vice chair of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 2.9 on software requirements engineering.  Atlee was the program-committee chair for the International Conference on Requirements Engineering in 2005 (RE'05), and will be co-chair of the program committee for the International Conference on Software Engineering in 2009 (ICSE'09).  She is a co-author with Shari Lawrence Pfleeger on the textbook "Software Engineering - Theory and Practice."

Good resource

This was a good resource for the final class in my IT Management program. It contained a lot of useful information. It was formatted well and was easy to follow. I thought it could be a good resource going forward, though I only rented it so I returned it.

This was a required textbook for one of my classes and I ended up reading it cover to cover ...not by choice. The book does have some useful information, surrounded by pages and pages of crap. I would suggest a book a little more to the point.
