Great read, from start to finish! Thanks, Robert Greene ;)

This is a controversial book, mostly because the average person wishes the world were peaceful, friendly, and not full of chaos and drama...

Well, unfortunately, wishes don't make it a reality, and there are people out there who prey on the weak and take advantage of those who are too trusting. The 48 Laws of Power (by Robert Greene) illuminates many ways that those predatory people can gain power over anyone who is not aware of the manipulation and power games they play. And while it may take some practice, study, and a keen eye for detail, anyone can learn to spot these (often subtle) power struggles and often even turn the tables on the enemy at hand!

Please, if you are considering reading this book but are 'on the fence' about it because of the people saying negative things about it, just read it! This has become one of my favorite books in a short period of time, and it has given me a new way to perceive the world around me. Robert Greene is a great author, and the way this book is formatted / written makes it educational, entertaining, and compelling, all at the same time. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to every single person in the world, because it is not for the faint of heart; but if you've ever been taken advantage of, shut out of someone's life, lost control of a situation, had someone feign authority over you (successfully), had relationship problems, problems in the workplace, etc, you deserve to give this a read-through at LEAST once. Don't take everything at face-value... and by that I mean don't decapitate anyone for "transgression" of any of the laws, but definitely think about times you have seen these laws at work, and how a grasp on a relevant law from the book could have changed the outcome of that particular scenario.

.Long story short, this is an amazing book! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! :)

It's like history's greatest hits!

What is the best strategy book of all time? The Prince by Machiavelli, The Art of War by Sun Tzu, The Book of Five Rings by Musashi? What about where the greatest war stories come from? Ancient Greece, medieval Europe, or perhaps China's dynastic period? Throw in any ancient war strategy and political history book, and most likely Robert Greene has analysed them in the contextual manner within 48 theories that become his laws of power.

It has the brilliant war strategies used by Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington and Mao Tse Tung, the ruthlessness of Ivan the Terrible, John D Rockefeller and Henry VIII, and the wisdoms of Roman Emperors and ancient Japanese tea masters. It is heavy with the tricks and lies used by Henry Kissinger and Otto Von Bismarck, the masterclass diplomacy of Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, or the seductive techniques of the mythical Mata Hari and the many European mistresses. It also analyses the mistakes made even by great men like Xerses and Cyrus the Great, the fraud by con artists such as Panco Villa and Yellow Kid Weil, the camouflaging move made by Ethopian emperor Haile Selassie and Elizabeth I, and the behind the scene moves by Cosimo de Medici to rule Florence.

In between the stories there are writings by the likes of Leo Tolstoy, Machiavelli, Sun Tzu and Baltasar Gracián, and many fables, proverbs and quotations fittingly appropriate within the subject matters. And between the myths, frauds, scandals and tragedies we'll learn about the structure of past societies and how it changes overtime. Indeed, Robert Greene has successfully managed to bring the biggest characters in history to life and even able to portray them as ordinary emotional human beings, but, crucially, human beings who posses winning strategies.

It is by far the most comperensive history book I've ever read, and it got to be the book I've read at the slowest pace. I read and re-read it, highlighted and made lots of notes, and actually made several changes in the way I analyse things, in the way I behave and in understanding other people's behaviours.

Einstein once said that the secret of creativity is knowing how to hide your sources. This book has become an analysis tool so valuable that I hesitated for a while on whether or not I should write a review and reveal my sources. You know what, don't read this book. It's a waste of time and it won't do you any good.

When trash and scumbags rule the world, only more trash and scumbags will be born

This is a great book if you want to have the Armor of Knowledge equipped in your head. Certain laws contradict each other but the whole point is to use them when the need arises. There's 48 laws while during my lifetime, I will have countless encounters with people I prefer to avoid. Not just the workplace but school and real life I see not just stupid people but deceiving, narcissistic, and self-absorbed who want to shove your views down your throat. You can get respond back and crush their spirit (Law 15) or leave them alone for the insects that they are (Law 36). This book may be looked as manipulative but the people who have used these laws have their names carved onto History. And as a result, the Author has broken down their actions of the past and turned them into a guide on how to help and instruct the reader on how to master himself or herself and take on the world.
But then again this is how certain trash and scumbags are born. Genghis Khan, Count Victor Lustig, Yellow Kid Weil, King Henry (don't know which one), Mao Zedong (He lowkey uses this Man a lot). I'm giving this 4 stars outta 5 because there's some laws I wouldn't use. Maybe because I'm a nice guy but I prefer not to have ghosts from the past haunting my behind. The IRS can do that.

The idea for a visual dictionary of architecture evolved slowly over a number of years as I taught in the design studio, read books and articles, and confronted terms that were either new to me, were being used in sometimes contradictory ways, or simply tossed out with the assumption that everyone knew what they meant. And so I often asked myself what did these terms really mean?

Of course, there were already general dictionaries that supplied these meanings if one bothered to look them up, and for more discipline-specific terms, there were architectural, historical, and construction dictionaries available. But few had more than a smattering of illustrations. And since architecture is such a visual art, I believed there was a need for a truly visual dictionary. The few visual dictionaries that were available simply named various things and their constituent parts but neglected to supply definitions and meanings. So there was this void to be filled.

The initial phase of the project, of course, consisted of gathering essential architectural terms and their definitions from various sources. For many, I had to reference textbooks to more fully understand the meaning of a term and then to compose a concise yet accurate definition. At times, defining one term required including other terms embedded in the definition. This led to a natural nesting of terms into sets.

As I continued to compile terms and thought about the project, it became clear that I wanted to not only properly define architectural terms but also gather them in a way that related the terms to each other in a logical and hierarchical way, using both illustrations as well as relative positioning on a page to convey these relationships. So then the truly challenging and fun part of the project was to see how I could organize the terms in such a way that their groupings into sections and subsections made sense.

To do this, I started with fairly obvious divisions, such as design and structures. Once the fundamental term was defined, I then arranged related terms in a hierarchical fashion. For example, design can be defined both as a process and a product, which led to two different sections. In the case of structures, I began with the basic idea of a structure and related concepts that applied to all structures, regardless of material or scale. The second level of terms began with basic types of structural elements, such as arches and beams, and structural systems, such as frames and plate structures, each of which deserved its own section.

Historical terms created its own set of problems regarding inclusion and proper placement. While some terms may be considered obsolete, they remained, in my view, useful as points of reference or retained a certain charm.

Once I had identified the major sections of the dictionary and assigned each term to one of the sections, I imported them into Pagemaker and began laying out the terms and definitions on each page according to their relationships to each other.

I then printed the page out and laid tracing paper over the page and roughed out ideas for illustrations. In many cases, this necessitated moving some of the terms and their definitions around. I then did the final drawings for each page on a single sheet with leader lines and arrows. After these sheets of drawings were scanned, I placed the scans in Pagemaker and adjusted the terms and definitions further to fit. In this second edition, I used Photoshop to eliminate the leader lines and arrows and used the lines and arrows within InDesign. This gave me some leeway in the placement of the images.

It has been a pleasure to develop this second edition and I hope the spirit and flavor of the first edition endures the inclusion of current technology.

Overseas Edition

This is an oversees edition book if you look at the picture of the rear cover closely, it says "This edition authorized for sale in the Indian Sub-continent only" This was taped over when I received it, which is what made me suspicious. After going back and zooming in on the picture of the rear cover I saw this. I guess its my fault for not paying closer attention to this and the ISBN. But Maple_Leaf_Books should make this known in the description. They did however tell me they will give me a full refund of charges, I will update once I return it. I have no clue if this book is even close to the american edition or not, there is not even a page in the beginning that tells you a publication or copyright date. Elegant Simplicity and Mastery

A brilliantly conceived book. So simple, so direct, so thorough. Almost any idiot could have written it, but fortunately an idiot didn't. Frank Ching has mastery of presentation and elegant simplicity that sets him apart from the pack, and this is the very best of his work. I reference it often, and find myself just reading it for ideas and pleasure.

Excellent book, a MUST!!! Seller solved my problem.

My drafting teacher at college recommended me this book and it is really excellent, very useful and complete. It is a must for any interior design or architecture student. The item I ordered came with a torn page (the upper corner was missing) and I contacted the seller immediately and told him about the problem. He apologized and give me a credit for 1/2 the price of the book, so he solved the issue. I am very satisfied and would order from him again.

As far as the "A Very Short Introduction" goes, this book is a little bit of an outlier. It lacks the novel approach that we tend to see in the series, which encourages us to buy them. Despite that minor oddity, Close's "Particle Physics: A Very Short Introduction" is a wonderful member of the series, because it doesn't derive its value from the novelty that typifies Oxford University Press's series. The value of this work comes from the incredibly potent condensation of material that comprises it. In recently doing a survey of basic particle physics literature, I read a number of books, a number of them introductory, and I was surprised to find that the information presented in this book still had a few bits and pieces that the others missed. Therefore, if you are in the business of wanting to know quite a bit of the basics of particle physics, but without fluff, this book is the way to go. Also, the historical treatment is rather satisfying, insofar as developing a context for the scientific content.

Presentation may be an issue for some, as Close gives a just-the-facts-ma'am approach. If you are looking for an introduction is a little less stodgy and a bit more fun, I recommend considering the following, instead: "The Brittanica Guide to Particle Physics," "From Atoms to Quarks," or "The Elusive Neutrino: A Subatomic Detective Story." It is a give and take: Close's introduction has more material and the coherency of the presentation cannot be beat, but you give up style. Overall, if I am recommending a particle physics book to an undergrad, Close is the way to go. Otherwise, it really is a matter of taste and what you are looking to get out of the book, especially if entertainment is a value (the one-star review for this book was given for this reason, but, as I said, it is a matter of what you want to get out of the book, so beware).

Short, but very informative and well written

This is indeed a very short introduction (129 pages of text), but it is also very informative. The book introduces particle physics from the standpoint of experimental evidence, without recourse to any theory. Thus, there are plenty or bubble chamber photographs, but no mention of group theory or even quantum mechanics. I recommend this book to anyone interested in a highly readable overview of particle physics.

What is in the book -
The book focuses on the particles, protons, neutrons and electrons that make up our physical world, and the quarks that make up protons and neutrons. The book also covers photons and the different types of neutrinos, plus mesons and muons. While not the focus of the book, it also discusses the forms of matter found at high energies in accelerator experiments – the different types of quarks (the strange and charm, top and bottom) as well as the up and down quarks that make up protons and neutrons. Anti particles are discusses as are the possibilities of supersymmetric particles. There is also a brief mention of the Higgs field and the Higgs Boson. Gluons are mentioned, but not the fact that there are different types of them. The book is divided into 10 chapters as follows:

Chapter 1 – Journey to the center of the universe – A general introduction to the atom and the universe at large.

Chapter 2 – How big and small are big and small – A discussion of size from the size of quarks inside a proton or neutron as compared to the size of galaxies and the visible universe.

Chapter 3 – How we learn what things are made of, and what we found – An introduction to x-ray imaging and particle accelerators.

Chapter 4 – The heart of the matter – The constituents that make up atoms – electrons, protons and neutrons and the quarks that make up the protons and neutrons. This chapter also includes a discussion of neutrinos and anti-particles.

Chapter 5 – Accelerators: cosmic and man-made. Cosmic rays as a producer of elementary particles and different types of accelerators.

Chapter 6 – Detectors: cameras and time machines. The use of film, cloud chambers, bubble chambers and ore modern devices and how they are used to detect particles.

Chapter 7 – Forces of nature – A discussion of force particles – photons, W and Z particles, and gluons, plus a mention of the possibility of gravitons.

Chapter 8 - Exotic matter and anti-matter – The particles found at higher energies in accelerator experiments. (I found this to be the most difficult chapter and the one that I would have liked to have expanded a bit.)

Chapter 9 – Where does matter come from? – A discussion of the creation of hydrogen, helium and heavier elements.

Chapter 10 – Questions for the 21st century – Dark matter, Higgs Boson, supersymmetric particles and some questions for the future such as multidimensional space.

A good introduction to particle physics
By I am falling in love with my life
This book is one of the Very Short Introductions series by Oxford University Press. It seems to play enough role as an introduction to particle physics for general audience with concise volume of about 130 total pages. If you are a freshman student in physics before learning modern physics in sophomore course, I'd like you to read this book. It does not only teach the basics about fundamental particles, but also explains particle accelerators and detectors in detail with real pictures, and discuss the future prospects of particle physics. Before I read this book, I didn't know why some accelerators have circular shape and how they work. It was good to know the mechanism. Overall, it is a good book. But after about the first two thirds of it, many unsatisfactory points emerge.

1. Some non-logical reasoning -- At page 90, it explains why individual quarks cannot be separated. Immediately after that, it says,

It is thus that the effects of colour charges become 'strong' at large distances.

2. Some severe typos -- For example,

Electromagnetic radiation was set free and the universe because transparent as light could roam unhindered across space. (page 114)

3. Some vague points. It explains about CP symmetry (page 127) but didn't explain what it is. In the middle, it gives an impression implicitly that readers will come to know the relationship between the dominance of matter over antimatter and the 'accident' of three generations (page 103, 104), but there seems to be no clear explanation on it until the end, just calling it an important future problem at the end (page 115). As far as I know, the dominance of matter is solved by the CP violation, and that the 'accident' of three generations is the only problem.

Carl F. Auerbach is a Professors of Psychology at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University, where he codirect the Yeshiva Fatherhood Project.

Louise Silverstein is a former president of the APA’s Division of Family Psychology. She is Professor of Psychology at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University, where she co-directs the Yeshiva Fatherhood Project.

Excellent Resource!!

I am finishing up my dissertation - a qualitative case study - and this book was invaluable!! It really helped me logicall and thoughtfully assess my qualitative interview data. The text was easy to understand and will hold up against that dissertation committee review. I really can't recommended enough if you have any qualitative data to analyze. There are other good things in there as well for coding and general qualitative study methodology.

Excellent for Students who need to start Qualitative Data Analysis NOW

I bought this book because I needed to learn how to do qualitative data analysis IMMEDIATELY. Basically, a bunch of work got dumped on me (i.e. 75 pages of transcripted interviews) and I had to get started quickly.

This book is amazing because it focuses on DOING qualitative data analysis. It's a step-by-step guide to get from raw data to solid conclusions (which you can back up using your data). It provides just enough theory to let you know why you're doing what, without getting bogged down. Most importantly, it provides TONS of examples which make things much more concrete and helps with understanding.

There are several different ways to 'do' qualitative data analysis, and this book focuses on a single one. I like this since the book is more concise and the methods the authors use are solid and make intuitive sense.

Basically, I went from knowing nothing about qualitative data analysis to knowing enough to DO qualitative data analysis, just by reading this book. I found the writing style enjoyable and not overly academic, which again helps with comprehension and learning how to 'do'.

Literally, an answer to prayer!

I am working on a Doctor of Ministry degree and didn't know how to organize my survey data. Tried statistical (quantitative) criteria, such as "correlation coefficents" which only resulted in frustration and paralysis. This book showed me that what I'm doing is QUALITATIVE research. The difference: Quantitative research STARTS with a hypothesis that has to be "proved." Qualitative research takes results and PRODUCES a hypothesis, which then becomes one's thesis. The authors give researchers a "cookbook" method for crunching one's data, resulting in a narrative. Hugely helpful to completing my doctoral thesis! Highly recommend it for anyone working in non-scientific fields.

A Beauty

Amy Small-McKinney takes us on the most exquisite journey in her newest book of poems, "Walking Toward Cranes." Titles are hard. Cover designs, as well, but neither falls short. The inviting cover of deep blues and reds and greens immediately welcomes the reader. What follows is poetry--raw and brave, stoic and deliberate. Even, glorious. What moves me is the voice. Always going further into the low notes without ignoring the high ones, each page peels back another layer until we are left with what lingers close to the bone. "If I hum, I can't hear you. If quiet, I am yours. If I close my eyes, I close the sun." What more could I ask for? And then there is cancer, a topic Small-McKinney grabs by the throat: "I am afraid to leave my house. Since it arrived with its steel gray suitcase…Now it goes with me everywhere." I swallow and wait a while before continuing--a good sign that what I'm reading is working. As winner of the 2016 Kithara Prize, this poet deserves such accolades. I know I will return to these pages over and again. This is a beauty!

Stunning account of the confusing world of a cancer diagnosis and the tectonic shifts in life that follow

Small-McKinney's latest book, Walking Toward Cranes, draws the reader into the complex, conflicting world of living with breast cancer. "Between reading and crying, wear white in honor/of yes and no, be a bridge, a bride crossing". We are treated to words that speak the truth such as "Imagine a mother's heavy crystal from Poland/still not the weight of our possible loss." Small-McKinney does not hesitate to take on the false promises of the "breast cancer survivor" rhetoric: "And when they cheer, "Look, a Survivor," I want to shout, "No, lucky,"/ but wave beneath an arc of balloons..." Her unexpected turns surprise as she recounts both the ordinary and the extraordinary and the grace in between.

It is in this spirit of the interpretation of the Truth that the Essene Gospel of Peace will be translated in the following pages. Rejecting the dogmatic methods of literal and purely scientific interpretation as well as the exaggeration of the symbolists, we shall try to translate the Essene Gospel of Peace in the light of our consciousness and of nature, and in harmony with the great traditions of the Essenes, to whose brotherhood the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls themselves belonged.

Jesus lovers & health nuts: this is the book for you

I've come to be fascinated with the Essenes primarily because of their healthy way of life, specifically in relation to food, cleansing, parasite prevention, yoga for exercise and clearing the mind. I was pleasantly surprised by how much this Gospel reads like Jesus' teachings in modern day Bibles. There has been a lot of speculation about whether Jesus was an Essene, and there is considerable evidence that He did spend time with them- so after reading this book, I am convinced. Many of us believe that modern versions of the Holy Bible have been so edited that a lot of useful and valuable information was left out- whether you believe it or not, man is flawed and prone to mistakes in judgement. I loved this book and it resonated with me as Truth. If you're a hard-line loving Jesus freak like me and a health nut as well, this is a good read.

I have worked with this information since about 1975. I have used it to totally transform my body, reducing my physiological age by more than half, and changing my system so much that I no longer get sick, have any concern about disease and do not experience "normal aging." There are a few alterations and adjustments to make what is in this book practical for today's environment, which I have had to learn in order to apply. My feeling and experience is that this text is completely authentic and incredibly valuable. No wonder religions would not include it in any official scriptures, as it does not promote religion, and cannot be used to control people by fear as religions generally do. It is simply information on health and how to understand nature, that has long been forgotten, and replaced by today's medical drug dealers, who have become the number one cause of death in America. This is a valuable book if one really pays attention and then learns how to apply what it says.

Crucial, mystic teachings, they have long tried to hide from us!!!

So crucial, so mystic. Must read scriptures never included in the bible, hidden from us, detailed teachings from Jesus of "how" to enter into the heavenly realms. Those who seek shall find. Crucial scriptures about the Mother Earth and her nurturing angels, which we purify through in order to enter into the hidden kingdom of the Heavenly Father. Raw foods is not a "new" celebrity diet, Jesus was the OG raw foodists! So beautiful the way he talks about it, this is how he cured the sick and maimed, and this is how we can all cure ourselves, whatever disease, cancer and beyond, can all be cured if you follow his words in this book.
"It is the fire which blazes out side your body, which is hotter than your blood. With that fire of death you cook your foods in your homes and in your fields. I tell you truly, it is the same fire which destroys your foods and bodies, even as the fire of malice,which ravages your thoughts, ravages your spirits. For your body is that which you eat, and your spirit is that which you think. Eat nothing, therefore, which a stronger fire than the fire of life has killed. Wherefore, prepare and eat all fruits of trees, and all grasses of the fields, and all milk of beast good for eating. For all these are fed and ripened by the fire of life, all are the gift of the angels of our Earthly Mother. But eat nothing to which only the fire of death gives savor, for such is of Satan."

This book is the way, it's not the "book" it's the mystic teachings, everything is so perfect, so without fault, only Jesus could have said these words, so absolutely beautiful i cry every time i read through it.
