Game on!
By Jocelyn
What first attracted me to this book was the geek/gamer aspect of the book. I'm not a gaming geek, although I love old school video games, but I love reading about nerds/geeks because they're so intelligent, funny, and entertaining. This book was a lot of fun to read and I'm really glad I gave it a chance!!

Mia Strong is a strong, independent woman who has been taking care of herself for years now. She's a proud gamer-geek and she's also a popular gaming blogger. So when Mia sets up an auction to sell off her virginity, her story breaks headlines. People don't realize though that she only set up the auction because she needs some way to pay for medical school and to pay for her mother's hospital bills. She's not looking for love and has a plan. One night in exchange for her purity and after that, both of them walk away and never see each other again.

She didn't plan to find someone so like, yet unlike, her. She also didn't plan to fall in love with him.

Adam Drake is rich, powerful, and so happens to be a gaming nerd as well, being a software prodigy and all. He's also holding in a secret that can ruin everything. Despite this, he can't seem to stay away from Mia, the woman whom he won's virginity online. Soon he finds a loophole in Mia's plan and wins her heart.

Problem is, Mia doesn't really know all of Drake's secrets. And when she finds out what he's hiding, it can ruin everything. Are these two gamers meant to be? Or will their love story result in game over?

I loved this book! It was a lot of fun to read, although it started off a bit slow to me, and I really loved the connection between the main characters. I love the twist in the book, even though I guessed what it was from the start, because it added a lot to the story and explained the chemistry we felt between the characters throughout the book.

I highly recommend this book! Can't wait to read book two!

My favorite quotes:

"Every minute I spent with you made me want a hundred minutes more."

"I love you, Emilia. I love you so godd*mned much that I can't breathe when I don't know where you are or how you are doing. This last month has been torture. I wonder if it's possible to have room in my heart for anything else but these feelings."

"I never needed you to save me!"
"No. Probably you didn't....But I sure needed you to save me."

Great book and interesting storyline
By Michelle
4-4.5 stars. A nerdy, gamer girl auctioning off her virginity online to the highest bidder? Consider me intrigued and hooked. Because this story can go so many different ways and more than anything, I needed to get into the mind of Mia to understand her motives behind this. And then I needed to meet Adam, the man who won the auction for the exact same reasons. What's so interesting is how intelligent Mia is, but there are times when her brilliance does seem to escape her in terms of general common sense. While this auction seems very pragmatic on her part, where Mia is offering something of herself for the greater good, she also doesn't see the other side of it because Mia insulates herself heavily from any kind of emotional connection due to past hurts. I could see how much she sheltered her heart. As for Adam, when I finally understood his intent, that really elevated him in my perception of him, not that I didn't like him to start with. Adam is a smart guy, he's had his fair share of hurts, too, and the last thing he wants to see is for Mia to get hurt in an irreversible way, never mind that he could be falling for her in the process. I enjoyed how much the two of them were ignoring the white elephant in the room and danced around the topic until it came time to do a direct confrontation and left them picking up the pieces afterwards, figuring things out singularly and where to go from there. Mia came off childish at times, but I can see how she would revert to that given her upbringing and experiences and the need for control. As for Adam, he made his own blunders, too, but business as taught him not to back down and go after what he wants and he definitely does not like to give up control. I'm curious to see what happens with them next.

A Beautiful Battle To Let Go To Love & Trust
By salarsen
I noticed this book and found its blurb intriguing, so I decided to give it a try. I have to say I was thoroughly impressed. The author's writing is spot on, flowing from one scene to the next to the next chapter. Hints and clues to Mia and Adam's backstories were sprinkled perfectly where they needed to be to keep me reading. I couldn't put it down! I read it in one day. Mia and Adam's character descriptions live out between the pages and grow as their story forges ahead. The tension between is strong, seemingly always on the verge of erupting, but then it turns tender, which constantly has them pulling back. Any of the sexual scenes or topics where tastefully done and in respect of both characters. There was nothing vulgar or crass. Those scenes - especially where each of their internal emotional struggles began to surface in front of each other - were actually beautiful and quite moving. Anyone who's ever been emotionally damaged by the lack of love from someone (be it family or whoever) will totally relate to these characters. Mia's emotional battle inside and out is so harsh and wild I wanted to slap some sense into her, but also hug her and let her cry it all out. It's no wonder Adam, even with all his scars, falls in love with her. This book is definitely worth the read!

God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, by Christopher Hitchens

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris's recent bestseller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry
of the double helix.

From Publishers Weekly
Hitchens, one of our great political pugilists, delivers the best of the recent rash of atheist manifestos. The same contrarian spirit that makes him delightful reading as a political commentator, even (or especially) when he's completely wrong, makes him an entertaining huckster prosecutor once he has God placed in the dock. And can he turn a phrase!: "monotheistic religion is a plagiarism of a plagiarism of a hearsay of a hearsay, of an illusion of an illusion, extending all the way back to a fabrication of a few nonevents." Hitchens's one-liners bear the marks of considerable sparring practice with believers. Yet few believers will recognize themselves as Hitchens associates all of them for all time with the worst of history's theocratic and inquisitional moments. All the same, this is salutary reading as a means of culling believers' weaker arguments: that faith offers comfort (false comfort is none at all), or has provided a historical hedge against fascism (it mostly hasn't), or that "Eastern" religions are better (nope). The book's real strength is Hitchens's on-the-ground glimpses of religion's worst face in various war zones and isolated despotic regimes. But its weakness is its almost fanatical insistence that religion poisons "everything," which tips over into barely disguised misanthropy. (May 30)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* God is getting bad press lately. Sam Harris' The End of Faith(2005) and Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion (2006) have questioned the existence of any spiritual being and met with enormous success. Now, noted, often acerbic journalist Hitchens enters the fray. As his subtitle indicates, his premise is simple. Not only does religion poison everything, which he argues by explaining several ways in which religion is immoral, but the world would be better off without religion. Replace religious faith with inquiry, open-mindedness, and the pursuit of ideas, he exhorts. Closely reading major religious texts, Hitchens points to numerous examples of atrocities and mayhem in them. Religious faith, he asserts, is both result and cause of dangerous sexual repression. What's more, it is grounded in nothing more than wish fulfillment. Hence, he believes that religion is man-made, and an ethical life can be lived without its stamp of approval. With such chapter titles as "Religion Kills" and "Is Religion Child Abuse?" Hitchens intends to provoke, but he is not mean-spirited and humorless. Indeed, he is effortlessly witty and entertaining as well as utterly rational. Believers will be disturbed and may even charge him with blasphemy (he questions not only the virgin birth but the very existence of Jesus), and he may not change many minds, but he offers the open-minded plenty to think about. Review
"If God intended reasonable men and women to worship Him without embarrassment, why did He create Christopher Hitchens? It was a fatal miscalculation. In God Is Not Great, Hitchens not only demonstrates that religion is man-made -- and made badly -- he laughs the whole monstrosity to rubble. This is a profoundly clever book, addressing the most pressing social issue of our time, by one of the finest writers in the land."

"Do yourself a favor and skip the Dawkins and Harris; they're smug, turgid, and boring, with all the human feeling of a tax return. Read Hitchens instead. Test your faith severely or find a champion for your feelings, but read Hitchens. It's a tendentious delight, a caustic and even brilliant book. And with the title alone, he takes his life in his hands, which right there has got to be some proof of his thesis. And so, thank God for Christopher Hitchens."

It is a shocking book-- like learning that your pappa was Santa Claus
By Stuart Denenberg
As important to human consciousness as Copernicus-- and far more critical to furthering world peace than Moses, Jesus, or Muhammad. I have dared the "faith-full" to read it through. They skim, they reguse, abd they distort and misremember. It is a shocking book-- like learning that your pappa was Santa Claus, but a thousand tomesmore difficult to accept. Truly a watershed in our evolution of thoughtfulness and an accurate awareness of the Mystery and the Truth!!!

Free thinking, science, art, literature and critical systematic study on all subjects are Great
By Gi
It's never enough to tell over and over again how much one needs to go through the free thinking tradition that questions the power and authority of religion in the world. It's again so urgent to engage in the atheist's reasoning. To stop beeing afraid because the history of the exercise of religion, namely the western monotheist religions, has been one of fear and punishment and obscurantism and superstition and torture and war and ignorance.

It's all been said about the eloquence and wit and knowledge and courage of Hitchens. Subscribe to it all.

We need brave men and women to come forth and break the fear of offending this dark ages' proponents of an evil, dogmatic, violent and absolutist global society where science and art and literature and free thinking and debating and scrutiny and study and curiosity and fun and openness and tolerance have no place.

It's urgent to keep the fight against the final fight, the final war, the final word, the final truth, intending to put an end to the only way humans are supposed to live: the tentative and unfinished and interrogative and curious and sternly studious life. Striving enlightenment and beauty and knowledge and awe is our path in the world and this path can only be walked on by repudiating absolutist violent claims based on absolutist violent books that belong in History and in the past.

Mandatory reading!

'Holy' Hitchens!
By PS
This is a masterpiece. Along with "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins and "The End of Faith" by Sam Harris, this excellent work by the late Christopher Hitchens is one leg of the 'milking stool' of my atheism. It is provocative, insightful, and beautifully written in fluid and articulate prose. Even if you're a believer, I encourage you to read this book. It's not purely a polemic against religion; rather, it raises questions that every theist should consider and be able to answer.

The writing by Dr. Kuldell and others is very clear and engaging. They have done an excellent job of presenting complex concepts in easy to understand ways. I now have not only a better understanding of the concepts myself but also have additional perspectives and resources to teach and guide my students.

An excellent survey of Synthetic biology -- Must read for all responsible citizens.
By kumar vadaparty
This is probably the best book for anyone trying to understand modern developments in synthetic biology. Whether you are an engineer, a student or simply a responsible citizen in modern day, you will benefit immensely by reading this book.

In this day and time when you hear one new buzzword or "great genetic engineering discovery" producing another "miracle" (new organs, fossil fuels) or -- of course -- genetic engineering producing "Frankenstein GMOs destroying" our society (basically antipodal views our media likes to sensationalize), I believe we need a book that provides:

(a) a Framework that reduces the entropy in the noise of buzzwords and accentuates the signal of science (in electrical engineering parlance -- amplify signal/noise ratio): clears the "vocabulary"/taxonomy of the meta data (what is synthetic biology versus genetic engineering versus..,.) and sets a framework to understand these advanced topics better and consistently. This itself is a major contribution, and the authors do a superb job in introducing the vocabulary and connecting to real world (synthetic biology world) objects in a concrete manner.

(b) an Engineer's view & and experimenter's (hands-on) view of synthetic biology: from both an experimental science perspective and from an engineer's view perspective (plan-build-test cycle) this provides a consistent and in depth descriptions of famous experiments (iGEM case-studies). The "Plan-BUILD-TEST" is paradigm used to describe these experiments is similar to the famous "Plan - Do -- Check -- ACT" cycle popularized by Deming as a part of engineering Quality control (QC) -- and not surprisingly QC plays a big part of synthetic biology. The authors categorize the major experiments described in the book (each is a chapter) by clearly indicating whether the experiment/chapter is is to emphasize the "plan" part, the "build part" or the "check" part

(c) A good balance between "top down" and "bottom up": Many people lose me when they provide a "foggy" top-down (and repeated and lofty) view of the synthetic biology. These authors have done a superb job of providing a good top-down view buttressed by numerous bottom-up building of the knowledge. You see going from concepts to protocols -- it covers a fairly large spectrum -- but never loses the interest of the reader or the thread of communication while taking you through these large sweeping journeys through this exciting science. This is probably the most complex feat to achieve -- and achieve they did excellently.

(d) An excellent (and dedicated chapter) coverage on ethics. Rather than providing a biased view, the authors provide a much needed balanced view by going right to the source of some of the famous original debates (and the consequences) of the ethical issues. What is particularly compelling is their treatment of the reader as a mature person -- not as a consumer of an 8 second sound-byte (time between two commercials). Ethics of synbio is as complex as the science of synthetic biology itself, and they do a very good job in covering it.

(e) Last but not least: Excellent support structure through workshops (leading from this book) to teachers to provide this knowledge to young students. This is probably almost as compelling a reason to read this book as the rest of the previous parts I mentioned.

Finally, I had the great fortune of listening to two of the authors (Dr. Natalie Kuldell and Karen Ingram presenting it) and Dr. Kuldell's description of the workshops (I could not attend one as the notice was too short for me to take timeoff).

Dr. Kuldell is a dedicated scientist, great writer and cares for teaching -- a rare combination in these times. I wish more such authors come forward and write with similar passion.

A great read (I could not put this book down and had to share with my son-- together -- we finished in three days).

Read, have your children/friends/family read -- learn and ENJOY!!

Engineer, teacher and (forever) a student.

Bought for college course.
By C.J.
I only had to order one book this year at the college that I couldn't get a new edition of. This one is a nice used book and I will get almost all of it back when I sell it back. I think it's great to buy used books and pay no or small shipping and can send it back for small or low shipping for most all my money to re-invest in another product. Why would I want to loose money on a popular stock account investment, when I can buy low, sell high and reinvest my profits with little to no losses, on so many options?? Thanks Amazon for taking me to the bank; not for investments but to count the savings.

Missing referenced sections
By D. Smith
I don't like the book. It references appendixes that do not exist making a difficult subject more difficult to learn. That being said, I had no choice but to purchase it as that was what the instructor required. The instructor said that they had to change a certain percentage of the book to make a new edition and those changes probably caused the referenced appendixes to be removed.

Republic of Spin: An Inside History of the American Presidency, by David Greenberg

“A brilliant, fast-moving narrative history of the leaders who have defined the modern American presidency.”―Bob Woodward

In Republic of Spin―a vibrant history covering more than one hundred years of politics―presidential historian David Greenberg recounts the rise of the White House spin machine, from Teddy Roosevelt to Barack Obama. His sweeping, startling narrative takes us behind the scenes to see how the tools and techniques of image making and message craft work. We meet Woodrow Wilson convening the first White House press conference, Franklin Roosevelt huddling with his private pollsters, Ronald Reagan’s aides crafting his nightly news sound bites, and George W. Bush staging his “Mission Accomplished” photo-op. We meet, too, the backstage visionaries who pioneered new ways of gauging public opinion and mastering the media―figures like George Cortelyou, TR’s brilliantly efficient press manager; 1920s ad whiz Bruce Barton; Robert Montgomery, Dwight Eisenhower’s canny TV coach; and of course the key spinmeisters of our own times, from Roger Ailes to David Axelrod.

Greenberg also examines the profound debates Americans have waged over the effect of spin on our politics. Does spin help our leaders manipulate the citizenry? Or does it allow them to engage us more fully in the democratic project? Exploring the ideas of the century’s most incisive political critics, from Walter Lippmann and H. L. Mencken to Hannah Arendt and Stephen Colbert, Republic of Spin illuminates both the power of spin and its limitations―its capacity not only to mislead but also to lead.

Review
“Greenberg is a terrific storyteller. . . . An education and an engrossing read.” (Christopher Buckley - National Interest)

“Fine, nuanced.” (Michael Beschloss - New York Times Book Review)

“Greenberg neatly weaves a history of public relations into his political tale.” (H. W. Brands - Washington Post)

“This essential book is going to wind up on every politico’s shelf.” (Matthew Cooper - Washingtonian)

“In Republic of Spin, David Greenberg opens a new and revealing window on the modern American presidency by showing how the effort to manipulate public opinion has long been a central obsession in the Oval Office. Vivid characters, some very famous and some obscure, bring this important story to life and enlighten us about what presidents can and cannot accomplish.” (Jeffrey Toobin, author of The Oath and The Nine)

“Anyone wishing to understand how our politics evolved from the era of Teddy Roosevelt’s bully pulpit to the exquisitely calibrated constructions of today’s publicists, pollsters, speechwriters, and snakes needs to read Republic of Spin. David Greenberg’s book is everything that a political history should be―vivid, comprehensive, and important.” (Daniel Okrent, author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition)

“An utterly engrossing and deeply authoritative examination of spin and the American presidency―its origins, its vital role over the past century, its enduring importance. Greenberg’s elegant narrative brings this history vividly alive, as he weaves individual lives and broader societal forces into a major reassessment of modern American political culture. Spin has always been a part of politics, and it always will be; read this gem of a book to find out why that is, and what it means for our democracy.” (Fredrik Logevall, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Embers of War)

Fascinating Book
By DMesserprr
This is an interesting book, tracing the history of political information from its origins as "news" through its devolution to publicity to propaganda to the current spin. It covers the expected subjects beginning with TR through Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, JFK, Johnson, Reagan, Bush 2 and Obama, and traces their efforts - with varying degrees of success - to set up "official" news outlets. But where the book excels is its discussion of a large number of lesser-known cast of characters, both inside and outside of government, who either assisted their respective presidents in their election campaigns or to frame the news in the best light once elected.

The book concludes with a brief discussion of whether or not spin is a good thing: "Large-scale deception, perpetrated without countervailing arguments, could erode the standards by which we establish truth and falsehood and undermine democracy. But politics would be sterile if it didn't allow a wide berth for claims that were partial, rhetorical, aligned with particular visions and interests, or less than fully truthful by philosophical standards."

Essential reading
By Margaret O'Mara
Sweeping, authoritative, and chock-full of terrific stories, Republic of Spin should be required reading for any politician, press consultant, or citizen interested in how image-making and public communications play into the ways U.S. presidents run, win, and govern. Greenberg's fast-paced and engrossing narrative shows how media and political spin shaped politics long before the age of the 24-hour news cycle. He also introduces a vivid cast of communications wizards behind the curtain, whose words and actions redefined the relationship that the media--and the voters--had with the occupants of the Oval Office. A definitive and important book.

A culled set of history that’s hard to find summarized anywhere else
By Ken Freed
What is the correct role of the media in national politics? Does government propagandize the electorate or enlighten them? Will it allow us to scale up traditional New England town democracy to a national level, or create a society of conformists, eventually marching in lock step to disaster? Historically, how malleable has the public been? What was the media's role in advancing Vietnam and the civil rights movement? When does taking advantage of and playing the media cross the line into misuse?

And what of the media in society? Could it empower the lowest common denominator and institute the “tyranny of the majority” through demagoguery? Is it even possible to be objective?, since no single person can know all (even reasonable) points of view on a major issue. Starting at a certain level of abstraction, is truth simply a matter of spin and bias? And when the media has what one regards as biased reporting – is it due to an honest bias?, or does it come from the dictates of the outlet owner on which positions their writers should be hired for or favor?

Given the role of the internet in articulately advancing so many opinions at odds with each other – in the future will it be possible to even produce consensus about anything meaningful?

I have previous purchased and tried to make my way through several books featuring Edward Bernays (Propaganda, Crystallizing Public Opinion, The Father of Spin). Past the first few chapters of nicely summarized insight I found them to become so full of routine minutia and pontification that they lost my interest.

“The Republic of Spin” traces the role of the media (newspapers, radio, TV), starting with Teddy Roosevelt’s administration. The vast majority of the book held me spellbound, with well thought out prose - ways of explaining and summing up. Only towards the end with the George W Bush and Obama administrations did it (sort of) start skimming and falling short of other books (like Frank Rich’s “The Great Story Ever Sold”) . A frank analysis of what is termed “political correctness” - in light of statistics on social pathology (our present day elephant in the room, our third rail of politics) is also missing. None-the-less, this book presents a culled set of history that’s hard to find summarized anywhere else. Five stars.

About the Author
Allyn Washington was born and educated in Connecticut, where he also began teaching at Trinity College, his alma mater. He taught at Boise Junior College (now Boise State University) before joining the newly forming Dutchess Community College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he began writing Basic Technical Mathematics.

At the time, technical mathematics did not have a text that gave students the math they needed to successfully achieve their goals in the technical mathematics program. Al decided to write a book that specifically aligned itself with the technical programs these students were taking. He wanted his text to be flexible, allowing instructors to teach in ways that would most benefit their students. Through his vision and determination, Allyn Washington created the Technical Mathematics series.

Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of Elementary Statistics, 10th Edition, Elementary Statistics Using Excel, Elementary Statistics Using the TI-83 84 Plus Calculator, and he is a co-author of Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life, and Business Statistics. He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzing medical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on Elementary Statistics.

Ellena Reda is the Department Head of the Mathematics, Physical and Computer Sciences Department at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She began her career at DCC in 1988 as an adjunct instructor. Ellena received her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at Marist College, her Master’s degree in Mathematics/Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and an advanced graduate certificate in Educational Computing from the University at Stony Brook. She is the program coordinator at DCC for the Verizon Next Step Program, has served as the program’s mathematics curriculum leader, and has taught a variety of courses in this technical program.

Ellena is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. She was a writing team member of the NSF - AMATYC Math Works Project. She was the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) Grant and a team leader/teacher leader for the State Professional Development Collaborative, an NSF/ATE Grant. In spring 2005 she was named a Regional Teacher of the Year by the New York State Technology Education Association. Ellena has co-authored the Excel Manual that accompanies Elementary Statistics, 8th, 9th and 10th editions written by Mario Triola.

In her spare time Ellena enjoys golfing, running, and reading. In 2003 she ran her first marathon to raise money for the American Stroke Association. Since then she has run 2 marathons and 3 half-marathons. She has three grown children and lives locally with her husband.

Printing may be distracting, but still the perfect Bible if you want to study deeper
By ValleyoftheShadow
I was a little leery of purchasing this Bible, given all the negative reviews about the printing quality. However, the Thompson Chain Reference Bible is one that I have wanted for several years. I first got one about 10 years ago, and due to the very light red text and inconsistent printing, it was returned. I have finally repurchased, and as I still notice these issues, I think it is just the way that it is with this publisher.

As for the quality of the printing, there are definite issues that are noticeable. I have attached a picture showing how the darkness of the print can vary between pages. It is not that extreme, but noticeable and possibly distracting. The red font is also a light shade of red which is not that easy on the eyes, compared to my older Bible where the red was a darker color. Another issue I noticed with the red font is that some of it is actually slightly out of alignment with the regular font. The more issues like this that I find, the more it seems to distract me from reading, as I start scanning the pages for problems. I have not found anything so bad it makes the text illegible, just a bit distracting.

On the positive side, this is the perfect Bible if you are like me and looking for a Bible that goes beyond the basic text, but includes aids to help you get more out of the Bible (and you don't want commentary, which might be wrong or biased). You can really study with this Bible and get more out of it. And even though it has a tremendous amount of study aids, the actual body of text is COMPLETELY free from any notes or annotations, leaving you free to just read the text if that is all you want. The beginning of each book usually has a short notation of the author and often things like the main theme, key thoughts, and key verse/text of the book; there is also a subheading under each chapter division that gives a quick list of the topics in that chapter. And of course, it has a unique and comprehensive chain reference system that makes it easy to study further along basically ANY topic encountered while you read. Another reviewer mentioned this, but if you look it up on Youtube, you can find a video that makes it much more clear how it works.

The back of this Bible also has an enormous amount of other study helps. You could spend a lifetime using this Bible and still not glean everything out of it. It includes:
-- Text cyclopedia. Here, all the topics from the chain reference system are found, and the full list of cross-references is given. Also groupings of topics that are very similar so you can study along a similar topic.
-- Bible readings (groupings of topics and verses for devotions or speaking)
-- Outlines of each book of the Bible. Includes a brief history of the different Bible versions, outline of the Bible as a whole, historical outline that relates Biblical times to secular history, and outline of every book. Some books also have illustrations to further help in understanding the overall idea of the book. Great if you are like me and need to see the bigger picture in order to understand the details.
-- Character studies. Includes some charts and graphics. Also includes differences in how Christ is portrayed between the gospels, and list of prophecies of Christ and their fulfillment.
-- Harmony of the gospels and illustrated studies. Includes maps with annotations actually explaining where things happened (great if you don't like flipping back and forth between the map and text, trying to understand what happened where). Also several more illustrations of various topics. Good if you are a visual learner who needs charts or pictures to understand things.
-- Archaeological supplement with pictures
--Glossary of archaeic words in the KJV with modern meanings
--Concordance
--Color maps with index
-- and more (list of memory verses from each book, guides to Bible study and marking, Hebrew calendar explanation, etc)

Because this is such a unique and helpful Bible that so many people could benefit from, I do wish the publisher took a bit more pride in their product to simply make the printing uniform and easy to read. All the hard work behind the content is there -- I just don't understand why the printing cannot be made uniform. Because a Bible is not an everyday purchase, I think most people including myself would be willing to pay extra to ensure quality. I would probably be willing to pay double for this Bible if the quality were stellar. Despite the printing issues that bring this Bible down from being the best it could be, I still love this Bible because I think it is one of the few that provides the tools to not just read, but really study deeply.

Good Meat and Potatoes Bible
By Gonzo
This is a review of the Thompson Chain Reference Bible (Style 509black) - Regular Size KJV - Bonded Leather.

The quality is excellent. The Bible is very sturdy and smythe sewn. The pages are thin but need to be as it would be simply to heavy with thicker paper; it has 1,923 pages not including the great maps (15 color) which include a very helpful index. I've experienced no problems reading the text on account of the thin paper and I have bifocals. The red lettering could be darker and brighter but I'm still satisfied with it.

The Bible has a copious Archaeological Supplement with each article having its own chain reference number that is linked to from the Bible text itself when appropriate, it also contains many B&W photos (about one per page).

It also has a ca. 100 page concordance which not only directs you to verses in Scripture but also to chain reference numbers to further help with the topic you are studying and of course these have many more Scripture verses to assist you.

I'll go ahead and list some of the other contents of the Bible listed under COMPREHENSIVE BIBLE HELPS:

General Index (All topics listed alphabetically with collateral subjects and chain reference numbers)

Condensed Cyclopedia of Topics and Texts (All marginal topics are contained here from 1- 4452 with their chain of texts AND when space allows the text is printed in full with selected verses of more important chains so you don't have to refer to the Bible text!)

Special Bible Readings for Private Devotions and Public Services.

Outline Studies of the Bible.

Bible Character Studies.

Bible Harmonies and Illustrated Studies etc. etc..

I would recommend Bible Tabs for this Bible or the indexed version since you'll be doing a lot of verse search for obvious reasons. Also a set of tabs that have blanks where you make your own references for the index, maps etc. wouldn't be a bad idea. If you can afford it I would also recommend a smythe sewn version so you'll have a Bible that will last and will lay out on your table or desk very conveniently.

On the devotional side I've found the Chain Reference Bible very helpfull when I am going through "dry spells", and just don't feel like spiritual reading and who doesn't experience that? The reason being is that it has so much information contained in it, Archaeological Suppliment, Outline Studies etc. (600 pages worth) that you can start there and let these helps serve as "frosting" for your your Bible Study and they can lead you into the Bible text itself, the "cake" so to speak. For all the extras in this Bible it still, as of yet, does not seem to me to be a fancy or "high tech" (i.e. a lot of opinion) version which suits me just fine so I've labelled this review "Good Meat and Potatoes Bible".

In Christ.

Amazing quality!
By Amber Holbin
I had read other reviews stating some problems with this particular printing/publisher, but have not observed any of these problems in the Bible I received.

1. Although I was expecting actual leather (I read leather bound) it is bonded leather. However now that I read again I see that is what is described and the binding is still beautiful.

2. There were complaints about the clarity of the print color and sheerness of the pages. I find that the print color and clarity is exceptional and although the pages are somewhat translucent so as to see other words through the page it is not distractingly so. The pages are very thin and it would be wise to be careful but I appreciate the thin-ness of the pages as closer to the traditional Bibles I remember from my childhood. Also, although the print is somewhat small, it is not so small that I cannot read it. The print is definitely larger and easier to read than the last Bible I had.

3. All in all I am very thrilled with this purchase! I have been contemplating for many months now purchasing a standard sized Thompson Chain Reference Bible. I have been wanting to get one of these because I like the idea of all the study helps and studying the Word out yourself without resorting to commentaries which are one mans opinion.
