comprehensive encyclopedia of mammology

I own Grzimek's Mammal Encyclopedia, I-IV and find it an excellent and comprehensive reference work. The drawings and photographs are good as are the behavioral discriptions and geographical mapping. The mammalian orders are logically broken down to the species and sometimes subspecies level.

The text is readable and nontechnical, oftentimes referring to eyewitness accounts and opinions. There is discussion of species frequency and extinction dangers but, at least, this isn't overdone. There is little inclination, as I see in some texts and at some zoos, to declare most species 'endangered' and the endangerment is hunting.

To be certain, the environmental movement has moved from the point in which hunting [a practice that can be easily observed] is blamed as the culprit for animal rarity and extinction. Most workers now recognize that environmental degradation and loss are, by far, the greatest dangers to the welfare of most species.

About the Author
Allan Tobin's undergraduate degree from MIT is in literature and biology and his doctoral degree is in biophysics with an emphasis on physical biochemistry. For more than 35 years he has taught introductory courses in general biology, cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, and neuroscience. He is the recipient of the U.C. Los Angeles Faculty Teaching and Service Award and is regarded as an excellent and highly interactive teacher.

Jennie Dusheck has an undergraduate degree in zoology from U.C. Berkeley and her master's degree is also in zoology. She also holds a certificate in science writing from U.C. Santa Cruz. Dusheck has written for "Science News," "Science Magazine," and other publications. From 1985 to1993 she was the Principal Editor at U.C. Santa Cruz and has received several national awards including the Gold Medal for Best-in-Category from the National Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. As a biologist she has studied the effects of light intensity on bird song, social behavior in field mice, food preferences of deer, cattle and skipper butterflies as well as axis formation in Xenopus laevis.

About the Author
Ruwan Rajapakse is presently a project manager for STV Incorporated, one of the most prominent design firms in New York City. He has extensive experience in design and construction of piles and other geotechnical engineering work. He is a licensed professional engineer (PE) in New York and New Jersey and a certified construction manager (CCM). He is currently an adjunct professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology conducting the graduate level geotechnical engineering course. He is the author of four books including Geotechnical Engineering Calculations and Rule of Thumb and Pile Design and Construction Rules of Thumb by Butterworth-Heinemann.

It is a nice book. Clear explanation on the foundations and basic principles of geotechnical engineering. However, this book is bound incorrectly, and the first time I opened the book, some of the pages fell out.

Nice resource for a specific audience

This is a fairly unique geotechnical engineering book, so it deserves some attention.

The focus is very much on conceptual understanding, reinforced by a very lucid and concise writing style and many simple example problems. From this standpoint, the book excels, and in fact I find it rather fun to read. At the same time, the book doesn't have the details needed to develop an in-depth understanding of the topics nor serve as a daily reference for practicing engineers.

So where does the book fit in, and who is it useful for? I would say the target audience is practicing engineers who don't specialize in geotechnical engineering, but have some involvement in it and want to develop or review their conceptual understanding. For that audience, I can definitely recommend the book. For other audiences, there are plenty of other books to choose from which may be more suitable.

I didn't give this book 5 stars bcz unfortunately it does not cover a lot of dreams. You can dream lots of things & not find it in this book. Still there is enough you can find to still purchase it. I gave it a high rating bcz 1. It is a very simple & quick book 2. It is Nostradamus! My number 2 reason makes me think that this is the best dream book out there bcz, even though you might not find every word or dream in it, the meanings have to be accurate bcz it's the great Nostradamus.

Kurt Busiek has been writing comics professionally since three days before he graduated from college in 1982, when he sold a "Tales of the Green Lantern Corps" backup story that appeared in "Green Lantern #162." Conan the barbarian meets planet of the apes - with a bit of rushed ending

This book includes the 3 volumes of the Redhand saga published in Europe, the first 2 being written by Busiek. The first part is a pretty standard story of the foreigner who will change the lives of small community of people. And then bloodbath ensues. The first part has a nice balance between action and calmer moments with pretty good dialogues which help build characters. The second part, while entertaining, is unfortunately a bit too similar: Redhand goes to a city, question the religion of the people living there, then bloodbath. More or less the same narrative scheme, but on a grander scale. It's actually still pretty fun and we get to know a lot more about the lore and introduces interesting characters.
The third part I have issues with though. This part was not written by Busiek, and the change of pace is quite jarring. Everything goes pretty fast. Gone is the introspection, the dialogues, the character building: it's just a race to the city of gods to unveil the final twist. I think a little bit more time should have been spent on this last part. I am not going to spoil the end, which is an interesting sci-fi twist, but it falls a little bit flat for me due to the lack of information and pacing. There is a chronology at the end which brings some light on the ending, but I feel this information would have been great if it was integrated in the story instead of an info-dump at the end. Not that the end is a bad idea, but it is a little bit abrupt to my tastes.
The art is fine, a lot of details and a lot of energy. It is a bit "special", but definitely interesting.

Actionable Information, Not Just Ideas and Vague Concepts

I've read a lot of books on mental toughness lately. First off, most of them are written for athletes, and though I hit the gym twice a day every day, I'm not technically an athlete. Second, most books on leadership don't give you a lot of detail. Divine doesn't write in platitudes and ideals. He delivers actionable information.

The challenge: there are lots of acronyms to memorize in this book. Divine hails from the US Armed Forces (Navy SEAL Commander, Retired), so the love of TLAs is in high effect. But in the end, like all good things, you learn a bit easier because you remember them longer (DIRECT and PROP and SMACC are just things I do now every day).

The trick: there's a trick to this book. I almost don't want to tell you. He wants your mind and spirit to work just as hard as anything else. There's tons in here on meditation and on what can typically be considered spirituality. Only, it's written with far less crystals and fussy foo foo language and it's written like the kind of stuff you need to get your brain and soul as tight as your body for the work ahead.

The best: Divine gives you so many ways to take action, with a really good progression around it, that this book will DEFINITELY improve your mindset, your efforts, your intentions, and your output.

If you do the work. But then, that's the same with anything.

I've read a LOT of books on the subject matter covered by Mark Divine in this book but this one stands out above the others. Just as a point of fact, I've purchased the book three times so far, and will likely give out more to people over time. It's a must read. I've been blathering about it far too much.

Don't think for a minute this book is only about Navy SEALS. It is about a way of thinking, how to think effectively and achieve your goals in a focused and determined manner, build intuition, deal with adversity and do it all with much less stress. What is taught applies to SEALS, executives, athletes, and well everyone who wants to do more than just accept what life throws your way. Coach Divine teaches you how to take back control of your life and drive it rather than just be a passenger. I've read plenty of self-help books and this is seriously a cut above. Throw the rest out, they are now obsolete. I'm getting everyone on my team at work a copy of this book.

Forge mental toughness.

I have read tons and tons of self-help books and this is by far one of the best. Aside from Richard Mackowicz's "Unleash The Warrior Within" which is also written by fellow seal Mack, this is one of the best personal development books you can spend money on.

I strongly suggest anyone looking to accomplish their goals, beat depression, or any type of life challenge give this book a try! The chapter on creating a Mind Gym for visualization and goal setting alone is worth the price of admission. I can't think of another tool in my arsenal now that has helped me more then that one.

Not to mention all of the other gems sprinkled throughout the book. Mark is no nonsense and no joke, but never talks down to his audience. He relates to you and helps guide you the way he was guided himself.

Get this book if you are trying to accomplish goals and are experiencing setbacks. You will not be disappointed!
