An Awesome Classic Reference Guide for Horror Movie Fans

I really wanted the Overlook Film Encyclopedia or Horror Films to accompany the Sci-Fi version of the guide on my shelf, but sadly that book costs several hundred dollars and is long out of print. As best as I can tell this is pretty much the same thing- except it only goes up until 1985 (Some editions of the Overlook version cover films up until 1995) oh and it has different cover art. While I prefer the Bride of Frankenstein cover on the other one, I much much prefer the cost of this version. I don't really have much to add that hasn't already been said better by other reviewers- it's a great resource for those looking to make "to-watch" lists of classic movies they may have missed. It has great cross referencing glossaries in the back and the book is laid out chronologically by year. The synopses are brief and better written than many other film encyclopedias, and it takes a very academic approach to a genre that is often treated in a much more flippant manner. The mini-reviews are obviously written by experts on the genre, as they often contain pointed critical analysis and references to other films/directors/etc. that may be necessary to proper appreciation of the film. This is definitely the guide for those fans who take their horror films seriously and want to learn more about films they may have not seen. Any self-respecting fan needs this guide.

The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies

The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies is just that; it is the definitive textbook authority on all things Horror, spanning over eight decades of cinema. It is an important reference tool as well as a complete history lesson on the trends and growths that were experienced within the genre, beginning with the earliest silent classics and ending at the height of the Slasher era, when the book was published. The format is laid out chronologically, dividing each section by the decade and listing the films in alphabetical order by the year of their release in their original countries. Films from nearly every developed nation can be found within its pages, including many entries that are dedicated to the German Expressionists and Asian filmmakers, while also introducing many more obscure titles from countries like Austria or Brazil. Phil Hardy interjects with an informed opinion and rounded knowledge on each of the films being discussed. While his opinions on many of the entries will not be shared by all readers (particularly in his general distaste for the Slasher films), his critiques are always justified and rarely biased. Coming in at over 400 pages, with over 450 black and white stills and an astounding 1,300 film reviews, The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies is an absolute must-have for every Horror fan. It is impossible to thumb through its pages without discovering a slew of exciting new films that may have been long forgotten, but it is integral to read the text from start to finish rather than simply using it as a petty reference tool in order to better one's understanding of the genre.

Great reference for classic horror

This is a superior reference for horror movies. It traces the history of the horror genre from the earliest days of film by means of highly intelligent reviews of hundreds of movies. It also includes a list of major cast and crew members for each film. Although now a bit dated (it ends in 1985), it is a must for anyone who is interested in classic horror. A couple of warnings for those who may be interested: some of the stills that illustrate the book include nudity, and many of the reviews contain spoilers. However, anyone who loves horror movies in the pre-slasher era should find this tremendously entertaining and informative.

Interesting read. But...

It was an ok read, conveniently parsed out in bite-sized chunks that make it easy to read for ten minutes or two hours. Lots of interesting trivia.

But... There needs to be some fact-checking as well as some proofreading of the book. Consistent in mistaking an uppercase I for the number one seemed popular. Also the author tended to inject a lot of personal opinions, as we see in the note for Clara Blandick (Auntie Em from The Wizard of Oz). Clara committed suicide after being wracked with pain and a steadily declining health outlook as well as progressive blindness, prompting the author to write, "What a pathetic end for the sturdy, no-nonsense Auntie Em." I took exception to that statement and it caused me to read the rest of the book with a slightly less enthusiastic demeanor. I don't feel that this is the kind of book that is served by editorializing in this manner.

I was pleased to see that the book contains a very comprehensive necrology of, at the very least, many hundreds - perhaps thousands -- of Hollywood notables. There is also a lengthy list of burials by site of Tinseltown's departed, a surely welcome resource for fans who plan vacations around cemeteries and death ephemera.

To be sure, I would have given this at least one more star but for the distraction of unproofread copy and unnecessary editorializing.

Factually erroneous in places

Interesting, but has factual errors throughout. The driver of the other car in James Dean's fatal accident was Donald Turnupseed, not David Turnipseed and James was not nearly decapitated, although he did have a broken neck. Chris Farley was not found clad only in pajama bottoms, he also had on a shirt. The death picture of Chris is available all over the web, as is James Dean's death certificate. Poor research on the part of the author, when even casual internet users like me know better. Jayne Mansfield's death certificate is also online, and the author misses the boat a bit on Jayne as well.

Book of the dead.

Well, I'll admit it. I must be one doozy of a morbid person, because I enjoyed the heck out of this book! So much so, that the other 2 book's that I was reading were placed aside, just so I could finish this. I'm 53, and I've heard of, and watched about 90% of the people in this book, but I hadn't much of an idea how or when they had died. Boy, stars sure do get married a lot! One thing bothered me, and that was the section that Jon-Erik Hexum was filed under. Suicide. While he did kill himself with a gun loaded with blanks, he didn't know the repercussions of what a blank bullet can really do. I felt it should have been filed under accidents. Aside from a few snide remarks from the author, especially about Claras death "Auntie Em," I would recommend this book. It was a fascinating read.

About the Author
Charles R. Fitts is a professor at the University of Southern Maine with research interests in hydrogeology, contaminant migration, and applied mathematics. He earned an MS in engineering geology at Cornell and a PhD in civil engineering at the University of Minnesota. A must read for all: boys, girls, Mom and Dad. It's important.

Every teenage boy (actually everyone) should read this before embarking on the dating scene. It's an eye opener as to what girls go through when boys use girls as targets for their aggression and bragging rights. I understood, but never really knew what the long lasting awful effects are on an assault victim. It's like being set on fire. You may survive, and you may even heal physically and look fine, but you're never the same afterward. This book, thanks to Jon Krakauer, illuminates things well through select women's personal stories. And shame on the justice system for protecting the assailants. When will we all grow up?

All Too Timely

Jon Krakauer's dissection of the epidemic of sexual assault that has taken place in Missoula (and in many other university towns across America) may leave you angry and sad. No phony resolution is offered; instead, we get a careful report on a series of assaults, their effects on the victims, and the maddeningly ineffective response by the university and law enforcement community.

Well written compelling story.

A sad commentary on power and apathy on the part of university officials, city police and the "good ole boy"network in Missoula, MT when a series of rapes committed on university women by university football players goes mostly unheeded. Well written, compelling. Jon Krakauer has done an excellent job on this story. It makes one wonder how many other university towns across America are hiding their dirty secrets under the rug. As a mother, grandmother and long ago college student myself, it is infuriating to think that in 21st century America women are still having to fight for justice and equality.

Excellent resource for changing the regulatory enforcement paradigm from mindless zero defects to risk-based analysis of what enforcement should be about - reducing the risk the regulations were intended to address. Too many people working in the compliance field walk in with the perspective that they are policing - when instead the focus should be on effective reduction of risk - by addressing the leading indicators of risk. After 30 years in the regulatory compliance field, this is still my "go-to" for helping new professionals gain a useful, pro-active perspective on what their role should be, as well as how best to accomplish legitimate compliance goals....

The saga continues: Princess Bethany is back in the bosom of her family. They don't know the extent of her struggles to make it home and they certainly don't know that the companion of her struggles was Sir Erin Caldry. Now, in her place of safety, Bethany feels the absence of Erin keenly. For his part, Erin pines for the Princess but believes that she, in resuming her rightful place in the royal family of Dothan, has no need for him. Still, he is drawn back to her side like a moth to a flame; and not a moment too soon - Dothan is about to face a great challenge - Wolfric has marshalled his troops to invade the beleaguered kingdom.

Meeting up with Bethany and Erin again felt like a guilty pleasure. These two wonderfully drawn characters compliment each other so well that I was relieved when they were reunited. Alone is the final chapter in the trilogy of the Dothan Chronicles - it is a captivating read thanks to the interaction between the two main characters.

A great ending to the series

“Alone” is a perfect ending to a great series, which I didn’t want to end! I really wish there were more books in the Dothan Chronicles as I got so attached to the characters. Princess Bethany’s character development was simply brilliant throughout all three books, as she evolved from an abused slave to a warrior and later – a true leader of her people. Despite multiple obstacles on her way she didn’t let anyone or anything break her spirit, and my respect for her only deepened because of that.
The plot was probably the most fast-moving out of all three novels, and multiple threats from the former foes that Bethany and Sir Caldry had to face endangered not only them, but the whole country.
Bethany’s cold thinking when everyone else around seemed to lose their ability to reflect rationally proved her to not only be an admirable leader, but a compassionate and caring woman, who was ready to sacrifice herself for the sake of others.
A great ending to the series which I enjoyed immensely.

Great series

I’ve been waiting to read this final book of the series. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to these amazing characters. Let me say that it was a great ending to an awesome series.

In this book, Princess Bethany has reached her kingdom and is trying to settle back into her old life. She realizes very quickly that she’s a different person. I loved watching her grow up into a strong, courageous woman throughout the series.

I can’t say enough about our scarred knife. He was very much the hero he was made out to be in the previous books. I’m not going to say much more and give away any spoilers. But let me tell you, you won’t be disappointed.

I highly recommend this series. It has a bit of everything, from action, suspense, romance. Thank you, Miss Dufour for writing this amazing series!

Oldie but Goodie

Just what I needed - a how-to book that can stay in the shop next to my lathe. The cover is rubberized and should be easy to keep smudge-free. The writing style is typical pre-war American - every reader must be a young man starting his apprenticeship in the machine-shop trade, and therefore will benefit from helpful guidance in the areas of workplace neatness, respect for authority, comportment, and hygiene. All that aside, it provides an easy to comprehend picture of what a lathe is all about and how to bring out its capabilities. I'm an old man just starting out my golden years with a 1966 Mori Seiki engine lathe, and with no prior machine shop knowledge I should be able to do well with this book showing the way.

Great, reasonably priced reprint of a classic!

With an inexpensive reprint like this available, I see no reason to read the darned thing as a .pdf on my computer. Much more enjoyable this way, and it is also easier to carry out to the lathe when I feel like it. I only wish someone offered a similar-quality, similarly-priced reprint of the Atlas Manual of Lathe Operations. Kudos to Martino Publishing.

This is an excellent book that contains basic information on the operation of a manual lathe. With all the emphasis on CNC lathes today, it is through resources like this book that you can learn to use a manual lathe.
