From Library Journal
Eating as the rationale for traveling through Italy?where food and culture are so naturally bound together?is the theme of Italophile Plotkin's latest book. His ardent admiration for the country and its cuisine is evident in his personalized tour through the nation's 22 regions, including the islands of Sicily and Sardenia. Guiding us through a land bountiful and diverse in terrain, history, and tradition, he explores each area's distinctive foods and wines. When not traveling, Plotkin lectures and writes about things Italian and has penned The Authentic Pasta Book and Opera 101. He uses his extensive knowledge to create a catalog of helpful restaurant reviews, recipes (indexed), a glossary of food terms, profiles of cities and their local histories (indexed), and anecdotes that blend into an informative, entertaining, comprehensive guide. This selection is a treat for any travel collection.?David Nudo, "Library Journal"

From Booklist
In this exhaustive guide, Plotkin provides travelers to Bella Italia with information on the best places to eat in 300 cities and villages. Practical advice, such as making reservations, goes hand-in-hand with colorful descriptions of the Italian ristorante, trattoria, pizzeria, friggitoria, and other types of eating establishments. Plotkin is particularly adept at depicting the cultural climate of each region, listing appealing towns a traveler must not pass by and those area culinary specialities to be savored. Whether one desires the address of a fine butcher shop, has a hankering for pastries and an espresso, or seeks a dining experience fit for a king, these listings more than fit the bill. When seeking out excellent culinary fare, doubtless, the true gourmet will be undaunted by this weighty tome. Alice Joyce

Informative book for research, but not for carrying on the road.
By sfvp
My biggest complaint about this book is its weight of 3 lb! To put it in perspecive, my iPhone weights 1/4 lb, my iPad Air weights 1 lb, my 15" laptop weights 4.5 lb. I am flying out to Italy in 2 days and now that I am packing for the trip, I have decided not to take this book with me on the road because of its weight. The value of this book just doesn't justify a space in my limited luggage space allowed by the airline. Considering this book was written for travelers, it really puzzles me as to why Fred didn't release a Kindle or iBook version of the book. That's rather incosiderate to his readers, in my opinion.

As to the content of the book, I really like what Fred wrote about each region and it gave me some background and context in terms of what to focus on as I travel through northern Italy. The only thing that I found a bit strange is that he described many regions as the best place for food in Italy. Shouldn't there be only one best? Aside from that, each region's specialties are described well. I also like the fact that he didn't just talk about restaurants but also cafes, markets, and other food related points of interest.

What I have been doing for planning is to use this book as a starting point, and then cross reference check about the restaurants/markets on TripAdvisor.com, Chowhound.com, and 36-hour NYT travel articles. I also checked Lonely Planets and Anthony Bourdain's No Reservation show. This book served me really well giving me the background knowledge and context during planning. Now that I've bookmarked all the restaurants and markets I want to visit on TripAdvisor, I'll leave this book behind and pray that I'll remember as much background information in this book as I can when I'm in Italy.

Most of the negative reviews for this book has been about the inaccuracy of the restaurant information. I can't comment on that since I am not in Italy yet. However, I am visiting northern Italy, which the book seems to have more current infomation for. Also, the places that I am interested in visiting in the book, I've also checked tripadvisor and bookmarked them on the site. I am hoping that they are mostly accurate.

I really wish that the book had a more traveler-friendly format that I could carry with me on the road.

Depending on how long the food coma lasts after I come back from my trip, I will update my review as soon as I can. :-)

Hard to leave this huge book at home...
By Veronica
OK, so maybe you don't want to lug this book all over Italy. But, despite its size, I'm actually considering it. Why?

The book begins with quite a few pages on Italy and its food and culinary traditions in general. Then it's broken down by region and further by cities that the well-traveled author selects as exemplary of each region.

Each region gets a few pages of general info--whatever this talented, entertaining writer selects as being integral to understanding that region and, therefore, the food. Then he describes the culinary traditions of that region--about its wine, cheese, or specialties and what you would expect to be served for each course. Then he lists specific places to go and usually writes comments about each one. That part is not structured: he may choose to tell about the food, the proprietor, the ambience, or whatever reason he is fond of it--usually something that makes my mouth water or makes me long to possess first-hand the nostalgia he communicates. Basically I assume that if this author chooses to include a place, it's worth a visit.

As far as trip planning is concerned, I've found this to have the best intro to each region in Italy of all my travel guides. (I'm not denigrating sight-seeing guides--you might have time to do something between meals, so get one of those, too.) His few pages on each region are not overwhelming and help introduce one to its unique flavor. Once I've selected the regions to travel to, I'll trust his selections of cities and places to visit.

It's not a map-and-pretty-pictures sort of travel guide--more like a friend in the know telling you what not to miss. It's even great armchair travel.

To REALLY enjoy Italy, don't leave home without Foodie Fred along!
By Savvy Reader
This new version gets five cannoli! I always thought I was a rather modest authority on traveling and dining in Italy. But nay! Once upon a time, not TOO long ago,I had the pleasure of traveling throughout the Friuli area of Italy with this book's author, Fred Plotkin, who lives what he eats, and puts his pen to where his senses have been in drinking, dining, walking observing, shopping. I must admit, he's definitely the "go to" guy--this book is like him--a well prepared banquet of expertise on Italy...its areas, food, wine, customs, culture, where to dine, what to look for, why do they eat that, how they found it, tried it, make it, etc...Fred's the guy! His little notebook is never far from the end of his pen, and he stuffs it as full of ingredients and flavors as a mouth-watering bowl of minestrone. "Italy For the Gourmet Traveler" in this updated version has grown into a veritable Festa...a six pound, 700 page bundle of delightful banter and reliable, satisfying armchair snack crunching for the traveler, with drinking, shopping, local color and dining tips you'd want about every nook, cranny, crag, river or lake of the long boot of Bella Italia.

When I'm planning to revisit Italy, I consult the pages of Fred's book that are pertinent to my itinerary, copy them to take with me, and then find myself caught up and start re-reading other sections too! I recommend it to all my friends. It's a great book to own. A terrific value for the modest price. Don't go without Fred Plotkin or a Kindle copy along, or the pertinent pages of his book to consult along the way. If you're an armchair traveler, you'll enjoy this trip! Ciao!

Review of New Version on Kindle
By Brynnlux
I first read this book (the edited down version) when I was nine years old, I received the book as a gift, and again when I was twelve for school. I recently re-read the book (the new un-edited version) and coming from an entirely different perspective now that I am a thirty year old mother.

First, I want to say that I absolutely believe that this book should still be included in school curriculum. The only thing 'new' about it is that pages and passages were added. Nothing was taken out and the translation was not changed. Reports that the book is so different that it's nothing like the original are false. Reports that the story is different are false.

There is no reason for the edited version to still be used because children read Anne Frank's diary around ages 11-14 years old which was around age when Anne herself was writing the diary. Anything that could be seen as supposedly "inappropriate" can be seen on daytime television with a PG or maybe PG-13 rating. Especially these days, there's definitely nothing in there that is beyond the norm for the average tween-teen. I think that continuing to use an edited version is insulting to Anne Frank's memory. Not only that, but it provides valuable information about the time period and gives more relateability to the diary.

The passages which are included in the new version are not anything that the average 8-12 year old girl does not already know about her own body and the "birds and the bees", and are so few and short that they comprise a tiny percentage of the work itself. The romance between herself and Peter is very chaste and nothing untoward happens in the story. (Spoiler: they hold hands and a kiss a few times. that's it.) The passages that some see as inappropriate are not at all titillating, a medical textbook is more erotic. Coming from a mom's point of view, I would definitely allow my daughter to read the unedited book.

I think this should stay on school book lists because some kids these days see the Holocaust as something that happened a long time ago that is meaningless now, without realizing that genocides and racial motivated violence still happens every day. I think it seems to them like just another thing they have to learn about along with The Hundred Years War and the Crusades.

Anne Frank's diary gives kids perspective and helps makes the tragic loss of life during WWII a tangible thing they can understand. The diary is so relate-able and reflects so many feelings that all teens have had, that she becomes three dimensional to them and no longer a just some person that died a long time ago. This sensitivity towards the loss of a life is what we need now in the times we live in.

As we read the diary we see how much potential was lost not only in Anne but in her entire family. Anne Frank was an intelligent and well-read young woman who studied multiple languages and had an analytical mind. I believe we lost a shining beacon of women's intelligence when she died. She was an emerging feminist, activist, and writer! I think she would have been an amazing woman who would have gone on to do great things. All that potential was lost millions of times over during WWII, and this is what we feel deep in our hearts upon closing the book.

Most of the book is about the privations and hardship of living hidden away in the "annex". There is very little coverage of the violence of the times or much that is going on in the outside world because they had little knowledge of it since they were hidden. I think this is partly why some schoolchildren report the diary is boring. It does get repetitive at times, which reflects the feelings of those living in hiding. They had to wait and wait in fear, not knowing what the next day would bring.

There are many self-reflective passages where Anne laments being picked on by the adults in the annex, wondering if she will live up to the expectations they have for her, hoping she can reach her goals. There is a thread of hope apparent even in her most depressing writings. I think these are the parts I think teens find most relate-able because all teens want to achieve things, please their parents, and find hope in their moments of despair.

Toward the end of the diary we see just how difficult things have become for the family which is not always accurately represented in the movie versions of the diary. They were starving, never full at meals, and having to exist off moldy and tasteless food. There was one bathroom for eight people and at times the toilet could not be flushed. They had threadbare, holey clothing which was too small. The cat used the bathroom wherever it wanted towards the end, and their helpers came less and less frequently as circumstances got worse and worse. Their conditions deteriorated in ways that children living in the comfort of the 21st century could never imagine. It's so important for kids to read about these conditions and contrast them with their own in order to not only feel grateful but to feel sympathy for those who lived in these terrible times.

The Kindle version had fairly large print and worked just fine on my phone and tablet with no issues. The new version has a new introduction and I believe the epilogue has changed a bit as well. I enjoyed the footnotes feature which allows you to touch the number which takes you to the footnotes page, then when you touch the number again it takes you back to the page you were originally on. I had no problems purchasing or downloading.

If you want to know more about what happened to Anne Frank after the diary, there is a book called "The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank" by Willy Lindwer which includes stories from people who met her in the camps.

Another recommendation is the author Eva Schloss who was Anne Frank's stepsister, who wrote about surviving Auschwitz.

It's not surprising to me that Anne wrote so well; this is not a fiction after all; it was her life.
By Evie
An amazingly talented young writer. The struggles, emotions and fears are so well described by someone so young... but this fact, has been mentioned by many other reviewers.

What I'd like to add is, it's not surprising to me that Anne wrote so well; this is not a fiction after all; it was her life.

It was a daily struggle to endure and maintain sanity; it didn't happen. How could it? So many people? In such a relatively small, confined space, had no hope but to lose sight of reality to a greater or lesser degree (dependent on the strength of each individual).

Anne herself, was dealing (not only) with the horror of war on the outside of their hideout, but also with the confusion of being a teenager, plus, the difficulty of having to share close quarters with multiple personalities.
What surprises me, is that they managed to exist for as long as they did.

A horrid and frightening glimpse into the world of a handful of people, who tried, valiantly, to survive genocide...

Incredible!
By Kristine
This book has been on my tbr list for quite some time. I'm actually a little embarrassed to admit that I've left it this long to read. I am planning a trip that will take me to Amsterdam and knowing that I want to visit the Anne Frank House/Museum I thought it was about time to knock it of the list.

This was one of those books that you can't easily put into words. It really needs to be read in order to really understand and feel. I was very aware of Anne's story and the outcome but it in no way prepared me for when the diary abruptly ended.

In reality, Anne was a typical young teenage girl who was forced to grow up physically and emotionally in the most unthinkable of situations. You could easily see her inner turmoil through her writing and I found it quite sad and depressing. Knowing the outcome, I found it sad that she would never get to repair her wounded relationship with her mother or find her one great love. It was also easy to see her personal growth from the time they went into hiding to when the diary ended.

I'll keep my thoughts brief but I will say that Anne's personality was larger than life and I am glad that her diaries survived to tell her story. It was her dream to become a journalist or author when she grew up and came out of hiding and although her story ended tragically, her dream really did come true. Her diary has been read by millions of people.

Afterthought- Anne also did an incredible job of describing the annex in which they hid. When I finished the book I googled it to get a better visual and found that it looked exactly how I pictured it in my mind.

The Robbers Cave Experiment: Intergroup Conflict and Cooperation. [Orig. pub. as Intergroup Conflict and Group Relations], by Muzafer Sher

Originally issued in 1954 and updated in 1961 and 1987, this pioneering study of “small group” conflict and cooperation has long been out-of-print. It is now available, in cloth and paper, with a new introduction by Donald Campbell, and a new postscript by O.J. Harvey.

In this famous experiment, one of the earliest in inter-group relationships, two dozen twelve-year-old boys in summer camp were formed into two groups, the Rattlers and the Eagles, and induced first to become militantly ethnocentric, then intensely cooperative. Friction and stereotyping were stimulated by a tug-of-war, by frustrations perceived to be caused by the “out” group, and by separation from the others. Harmony was stimulated by close contact between previously hostile groups and by the introduction of goals that neither group could meet alone. The experiment demonstrated that conflict and enmity between groups can be transformed into cooperation and vice versa and that circumstances, goals, and external manipulation can alter behavior.

Some have seen the findings of the experiment as having implications for reduction of hostility among racial and ethnic groups and among nations, while recognizing the difficulty of control of larger groups.

A classic experiment in child's play
By not a natural
I was introduced to the Robber's Cave Experiment in the late '60's by one of Muzafer Sherif's less distinguished students. He was finishing his doctoral dissertation and teaching an auditorium-sized class in undergraduate social psychology.

My initial response to the Experiment was dismissive: it was hard to see why anyone would be particularly interested in a couple of groups of kids playing rough-and-tumble games on a grassy field on the Yale campus. The instructor, however, had the good sense to direct us to Sherif's own written account of his work. It proved to be illuminating.

What did we learn with virtual certainty from the Robber's Cave Experiment, findings that have a multitude of applications that go far beyond child's play? First, if members of a group are prompted to compete with each other, the group will become fraught with discord and cease to function effectively as a unit. Second, if members of a group are prompted to compete with an opposing social unit, the group will become internally cooperative, and function quite effectively as a cohesive social entity.

These simple principles, moreover, are thoroughly grounded in the methodological strength of a genuine experimental design, and they have a multitude of obvious and unforeseen applications. The Experiment illuminates notions such as soldiers in battle fighting for each other rather than for an abstract patriotic objective. I think it also renders problematic currently popular notions such as merit pay for teachers: reward teachers as a unified group, perhaps competing against measures of past aggregate performance, not as one-on-one or even school-to-school competitors for ostensibly scarce resources.

More generally, let's disabuse ourselves of the notion that this is a dog-eat-dog world, and our children need to be taught its cut-throat ways. Yes, it is a dog-eat-dog world, but the formation of cooperative social groups provides a much better way to afford one's self protection. Members of violent gangs in big-city ghettos and hard-time prisons see this immediately.

It's entirely possible in a laissez-faire capitalist society such as the U.S. that group cohesiveness, efficacy, and sense of belonging will be turned against the interests of the many. Early twentieth-century capitalists knew this well and kept the working class fractionated by playing one ethnic group off against another. Preventing the distortion of institutions and naturally occurring social formations has always been a problem for working people in capitalist societies.

In any case, the Robber's Cave Experiment is not child's play. It's got too many actual and prospective applications to very serious situations involving adults doing the work of adults to be relegated to that diminished status.

Fantastic
By Evan Cooper
Any fan of Sword Art Online should absolutely read the light novels. They add a good amount of extra information to the story, and were good enough to be adapted into an immensely popular anime.

Absolutely get these LN's and read them, they're a great, short read for any fan of SAO.

but the light novels are by FAR my favorite of the three
By Elizabeth Remsen
I've seen the anime and read the manga, but the light novels are by FAR my favorite of the three! The just get into so much more detail about the characters' inner thoughts, etc. The illustrations are also very nicely done (though I could do without the fanservice-- there's TWO in this one), and overall it's a great read! This only gets through half the plot of the Fairy Dance story line, and I can't WAIT for the next book to come out!!

Another wonderful book!
By Andrina Healy
Once again, another wonderful book! I really love this author and will continue buying from him! This book covers from roughly eposides 15-20/21 of the anime, just to give an idea. I love how the books let you more into kirito's mind then the animes. If you love the anime and the other two books, you will enjoy this book as well!

"The Graphic Language of Neville Brody" was a bestseller when first published in 1988, a tribute to an influential graphic designer of the 1980s. A second volume has recently been published, assimilating the huge strides in technology that have taken place since the late 1980s. Both volumes are presented here in a single boxed set which has been specially designed by Neville Brody. Gathering together the best of Brody's designs - from the book and record covers, posters and magazine designs of the 1980s to the radical, experimental work of the 1990s - these books present the core of Brody's visual language, and reveal the motivations and meanings at the root of his designs. They should be of interest to all students, professional designers and computer experts, and anyone interested in the shape of communication in the future.

snapshot of '80s design
By Scott F. Sullivan
This is a great book for anyone studying the design of the '80s, it's not the most inspiring book to me personally as a young contemporary designer, though I do see the historical value and I definitely respect the work.

Gods, Graves & Scholars: The Story of Archaeology, by C.W. Ceram

C.W. Ceram visualized archeology as a wonderful combination of high adventure, romance, history and scholarship, and this book, a chronicle of man's search for his past, reads like a dramatic narrative. We travel with Heinrich Schliemann as, defying the ridicule of the learned world, he actually unearths the remains of the ancient city of Troy. We share the excitement of Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter as they first glimpse the riches of Tutankhamen's tomb, of George Smith when he found the ancient clay tablets that contained the records of the Biblical Flood. We rediscover the ruined splendors of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the wonders of the ancient wold; of Chichen Itza, the abandoned pyramids of the Maya: and the legendary Labyrinth of tile Minotaur in Crete. Here is much of the history of civilization and the stories of the men who rediscovered it.

an easy and fun read
By Robert D. Sullivan
This is a well-written, accessible introduction to the founding years and incredible sites of early archaelolgy and archaeologists. However, it was written and updated over fifty years ago, so much of the science and theories about these early sites is outdated. Still, an easy and fun read...

Peaks and Valleys: Making Good And Bad Times Work For You--At Work And In Life, by Spencer Johnson M.D.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Who Moved My Cheese?, a brilliant new parable that shows readers how to stay calm and successful, even in the most challenging of environments.

A young man lives unhappily in a valley. One day he meets an old man who lives on a mountain peak. At first the young man doesn’t realize that he is talking to one of the most peaceful and successful people in the world. But in the course of further encounters and conversations, the young man comes to understand that he can apply the old man’s remarkable principles and practical tools to his own life to change it for the better. Spencer Johnson knows how to tell a deceptively simple story that teaches deep lessons. The One Minute Manager (co-written with Ken Blanchard) sold 15 million copies and stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for more than twenty years. Since it was published a decade ago, Who Moved My Cheese? has sold more than 25 million copies. In fact there are more than 46 million copies of Spencer Johnson’s books in print, in forty-seven languages—and with today’s economic uncertainty, his new book could not be more relevant. Pithy, wise, and empowering, Peaks and Valleys is clearly destined to becomeanother Spencer Johnson classic.

From Publishers Weekly
John Dossett's crisp and polished delivery is a natural fit for Johnson's no-nonsense style of motivational storytelling. Dossett chooses to understate the pathos, projecting a tone of wistful contemplation instead of heavy drama. Both the story and the narrative within the story surround dialogue between a weary day-to-day corporate warrior and a seasoned sage who offers a broader perspective on our familiar notions of success, achievement and happiness. In light of the current economic climate, listeners will find the messages timely, even if the paradigm shifts may not seem especially original. As an added bonus, the audio book includes an interview with the author sharing how he strives to keep the public focused on his message instead of elevating him into a celebrity business guru. Before The Story

Early one rainy evening in New York, Michael Brown hurried to meet someone a friend had said might help him deal with a difficult time he was having. As he entered the small café, he had no way of knowing how valuable the next few hours would be.

When he saw Ann Carr, he was surprised. He had heard she had been through some tough times herself and expected it to show on her. But she seemed upbeat and full of energy.

After some preliminary conversation, he said, "You look like you're in a good place, despite the bad times I understand you've been through."

She said, "I am in a good place, both in my work and in my life. But it's not in spite of the bad times. It's because of them -- and how I learned to take advantage of them."

Michael was puzzled. "How so?" he asked.

"Well, for example, at work I thought our department was doing fine, but in reality we weren't. We'd been successful, but we'd become complacent. By the time we realized it, other companies were doing much better than we were. My boss became very unhappy with me.

"That's when I started feeling low, and the pressure to improve things in a hurry began. Each day became more stressful."

Michael asked, "So, what happened?"

She answered, "I heard a story last year from someone at work I respected. It changed how I looked at good and bad times, and what I do now is very different. The story helped me to be calmer and more successful, whether things are going well or not, even in my personal life. I'll never forget it!"

"What was the story?" he asked.

Ann was quiet for a moment, and then said, "Would it be all right if I asked why you would like to know about it?"

Michael reluctantly admitted that he was not feeling very secure in his job, and things were not going so well for him at home.

He didn't need to say any more. She felt his embarrassment, and said, "You sound like you need to hear the story as much as I did."

Ann said she would tell Michael the story with the understanding that if he found it valuable, he would share it with others. He agreed, and Ann prepared Michael for what he was about to hear.

She said, "I found that if you want to use the story to deal with the ups and downs that come at you, it helps if you listen with your heart and head, and fill in the story with your own experience to see what is true for you.

"The insights in the story are often repeated, although in slightly different ways."

Michael asked "Why the repetition?"

She answered, "Well, for me, it made it easier to remember them. And when I remembered the insights, I used them more."

She admitted, "I'm reluctant to change. So, I need to hear something new often enough that, at some point, it gets past my critical, distrusting mind, becomes more familiar, and touches my heart. Then it becomes a part of me.

"That's what happened after I thought a lot about the story. But you can discover that for yourself, if you like."

"Do you really think a story can make that big a difference?" Michael asked. "I'm in a pretty tough spot right now."

Ann replied, "In that case, what do you have to lose? All I can tell you is that when I applied what I got out of the story, it had a big impact.

"Some people," she cautioned, "get very little from the story, while others get a great deal!

"It's not the story; it's what you take away from it that is so powerful. That's up to you, of course."

Michael nodded. "Okay. I think I would really like to hear it."

So Ann started to tell the tale over dinner, and then continued through dessert and coffee.

Feeling Low In A Valley

Once there was a bright young man who lived unhappily in a valley, until he went to see an old man who lived on a peak. When he was younger, he had been happy in his valley. He played in its meadows and swam in its river.

The valley was all he had ever known, and he thought he would spend his whole life there.

Some days in his valley were cloudy and some were sunny, but there was a sameness to his daily routine that he found comforting.

However, as he grew older, he began to see what was wrong more often than he noticed what was right. He wondered why he had not noticed before how many things were wrong in the valley.

As time went on, the young man became increasingly unhappy, although he wasn't sure why.

He tried working at different jobs in the valley, but none turned out to be what he had hoped for.

In one job, his boss always seemed to criticize him for what he did wrong and never noticed all the things he did right.

In another, he was one of so many employees that it didn't seem to matter to anyone whether he worked hard or hardly worked at all. His contribution seemed invisible, even to himself.

Once, he thought he had finally found what he wanted. He felt appreciated and challenged, he worked with capable colleagues, and he was proud of the company's product. He worked his way up and became manager of a small department.

Unfortunately, he felt his job was not secure.

His personal life was no better. One disappointment seemed to follow another.

He thought his friends didn't understand, and his family told him he was "just going through a phase."

The young man wondered if he would be better off someplace else.

Sometimes the young man would stand in the meadow and look up at the range of majestic peaks that rose high above his valley.

He would imagine himself standing on the nearby peak.

For a while, he felt better.

But the more he compared the peak to his valley, the worse he felt.

He spoke to his parents and friends about going to the peak. But they talked only about how difficult it was to reach the peak, and how comfortable it was to stay in the valley.

They all discouraged him from going where they themselves had never been.

The young man loved his parents and knew there was some truth to what they said. But he also knew that he was a different person from his father and mother.

Sometimes he felt there might be a different way of life outside the valley, and he wanted to discover it for himself. Maybe on the peak he could gain a better view of the world.

But then doubt and fear crept in again, and he thought he would stay where he was.

For a long time the young man could not bring himself to leave his valley.

Then one day, he recalled his early youth and realized how much had changed since then. He was no longer at peace with himself.

He wasn't sure why he changed his mind, but he suddenly decided he had to go visit that mountaintop.

He put his fear aside and got ready to leave as quickly as he could. Then, he set out for the nearby peak.

It was not an easy journey. It took him much longer than he thought it would to make it less than halfway up the peak.

But as the young man went higher, the cool breeze and fresh air revitalized him. From higher up, his valley looked smaller.

When he had been down in the valley, the air seemed clean enough. But when he viewed the valley from above, he saw the pale brown stagnant air that was trapped there.

Then he turned and continued upward. The higher he climbed, the more he could see.

Suddenly, the trail he was following ended.

With no trail to follow, he became lost among the thick trees that blocked out the light. He feared he would not find his way out.

So, he decided to cross a dangerously narrow ridge. As he did, he fell. Bruised and bleeding, he picked himself up and continued on.

Eventually, he found a new path.

The warnings of the people in the valley crossed his mind. But then he gathered his courage and kept climbing.

The higher he went, the happier he became, knowing that he was leaving the valley and putting aside his fears.

He was on his way to someplace new.

As he rose above the clouds, he realized it was a beautiful day and imagined how the sunset would look from the summit. He could hardly wait to see it from up there. Copyright © 2009 by Spencer Johnson, M.D.

Either way
By Saymorning
Valleys in life lead everything else. You understood what is missing in order to re-create the peaks you had. But then you go through more and realized that nothing is more sexy than just living everyday life, doing things that make you quite happy, hanging with people who you deem yourself to be fortunate enough to meet.
Life is not to be taken seriously.
Our surroundings are ever changing.
Human nature is more pliable than you think.
Have dreams, or not have dreams. We can be happy either way.

Practical wisdom dumbed down
By Michelle Blankenship
This book has practical themes that are really common sense. It is written as a fable with predictable endings to most of the "lessons to be learned." No "Aha" moments as the principles are taught in the Bible. (Responsibility, self-examination, contentment, dealing with life`s ebbs and flows, maintaining a positive attitude, learning from one`s mistakes, etc.)

A takeoff on Bipolar Disorder
By Scott A Smith
I have been Bipolar my whole life so you can imagine my fascination with the title and the book.. Many of the cognitive theoretical
principals fit in well. A few changes here a few personal insights there. I like the fact that he learns retrospectively based on his
life long journey. And his choice of living in the mountains as a source of enligfhtenment is cerebral in its grace. recommend the
book to all especially those familiar with his legacy.
