1/3 of the way and I cannot read another page

I do not like writing reviews before I finish a book, but 1/3 the way into this book and I just cannot take anymore.

* Minor Spoilers *
Russ Green and Vivian meet and fall in love. By the end of the first page I was sure I knew where the book was going. I was sure she would die in childbirth and Russ would have to raise their daughter alone. I could not have been more wrong, but I almost wish Mr. Sparks would go back to his old cliché.

Instead the book comes off more like a Taylor Swift break-up song she writes for the sole purpose of revenge. At first Russ and Vivian are a happy newlywed couple. Very quickly their daughter London comes along and they settle into a typical middle class life with her staying home and him going off to his fancy PR job. But when he feels insecure at work he quits his job and starts his own company without getting a single client ready first. He then becomes bitter and feels insecure. Vivian gets a job with Walter Spannerman (read that as Donald Trump) and Russ is resentful. The next 7 chapters are from his point of view as he complains because he has to spend time with his daughter, taking her to her activities and doing household chores like grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and laundry. As if that is not enough he grumbles because he is not getting enough attention in the bedroom. When the couple does spend time together they bicker and snipe at each other constantly. While reading it I start feeling agitated and cranky too.

If all that is not enough the book is poorly edited. Words are missing and sentences repeat themselves. You can figure out what he was trying to say, but it feels like Mr Sparks is either just not interested in writing anymore, this book was rushed to release, or it was written as a way to get back at his wife after their divorce. I mean no disrespect to either of them, because it is horrible when any marriage ends, but this book is definitely in my top 5 worst books I have ever read

Many times I found myself unsympathetic to Russ, and agreeing more with his wife's positions. I had to push myself to finish it, and I even found myself speed reading through parts. There was a lot of bitterness in this book, maybe a reflection of Mr. Sparks' own personal struggles with a failed marriage? I miss the romance in his earlier writings ...

a delightful read that will have you smiling !!

This is a world where we want to live. A manor, that has hidden rooms and staircases, and antiques. But most of all... secrets. This book, keeps you on the edge of your seat every moment!! Julie manages to give you characters that you will love, and others you will love to hate. Secretly, you will hope those you don't like, are the killer. I promise you, this mystery does not disappoint. Unbelievably, the last page has a hint of the next mystery to come out! Don't miss the excitement!!!

Grace sees red

I love this latest cozy in the Manor House series.
First we learn more about Grace's assistant,Frances,which is great. This time it's Frances, accused of murder and Grace and Bennett pull out all of the stops to clear her.
We also meet Emberstown,New coroner again,Dr Joe Bradley. This time it looks like Grace may finally found a life outside Marshfield Manor.
I love Julie Hyzy's books
I hope unlike the White House Chef mysteries,this series never ends. Don't get me wrong,I will miss the White House Chef mysteries,but to know that Grace is still going strong,will ease the pain of losing the other series.

Grace sees red is a decidedly 5 star book.

Bodies, Booze with nothing to lose

Grace, Bennett and the gang are back. In this outing we get a look into Francis past and where she spends here weekends. This was a great addition to the series. The author has done a remarkable job at creating these characters and settings for the mysteries take place. Hoping on more Dr. Joe back story I think he and Grace will work well together professional and personal. Each book brings a new and challenging characters into the equation which makes the books great reads.

Beautiful and Touching

In 1973, a young woman named Tina is trapped in an abusive marriage. Her one escape is her charitable work in a thrift store. One day she finds an old, unmailed letter in the pocket of a donated suit. The letter, written during WW2, is from a young man begging his sweetheart, Chrissie, to forgive him. Tina becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to the young couple-and makes up her mind to deliver the letter. This book tells two stories: Tina's and Chrissie's. It alternates between the 70s and the WW2 era. And ultimately Chrissie and Tina's fates become intertwined through a series of miraculous coincidences. What I loved about this book was it's poignancy and hopefulness. It was a sweet, often tragic story, but it also showed the strength and resilience of the two leading ladies. I read this book in two days, and was unable to put it down.

Parallel Stories Set Decades Apart

The tagline on the cover reads “guaranteed to break your heart” and in many respects this is true.

Year: 1973 Tina Craig has a full-time job as a secretary in an established Manchester firm; her best friend Linda is her workmate. The money Tina earns is barely enough to pay the rent and feed both she and her husband who is currently unemployed, spends his time in pubs, and takes what little money they have to bet on the ponies. When he loses, or when he’s drunk, he becomes irate and unleashes his anger physically on Tina. To keep away from her abusive husband Tina also volunteers at a charity shop on Saturdays.

During one of her Saturday afternoons at the charity shop, Tina comes upon an old sealed envelope in the pocket of a man’s suit jacket. It appears to never have been posted. She opens it and reads the heartfelt message of Billy Stirling written in 1939 to a girl names Chrissie. Tina is so moved that she keeps the letter, vowing to find the woman to whom it was addressed and give it to her.

What follows are the parallel stories of Chrissie and Billy (1939) and Tina and Rick (1973). Set decades apart, there are similarities to the life obstacles both women must face. A heart-wrenching rollercoaster ride of emotions from the high bloom of first love to the bottomless despair-filled pit where both women muster their courage to overcome their worst trials to the innate humanity inherent in strangers, this is a five-star story that will keep the reader turning pages until the very end.

Note: American readers may find the British terminology a bit confusing at first but it is easily assimilated.

It's been a good while since I read a book as compelling as THE LETTER.....What an amazing storyline, could not put it down. I will definitely follow the author, Kathryn Hughes. Right up there with THE FLOWER AND THE FLAME!!!

I chose the rating of five stars, cause of this book. Even tho, I'm higher level, I still look upon this book, and repeat some songs in here, that I learned. Just amazing. I would recommend this item to beginner Clarinet players, this would help you a lot. It did for me.

Awesome Book for a Specific Developer Audience - They Will Know it When They Read it

This is an awesome book but it's not for everyone, and in some ways the author states this himself in the beginning of the book. This title is basically targeted at people who have started their ASP.NET career as MVC developers and may have skipped web forms and learning the broader ASP.NET architecture and platform. I know from personal experience that you can actually get pretty far in ASP.NET development by diving straight into MVC and just learning how the framework works without initially investing time in learning the lower level workings of the ASP.NET platform.

This book contains tons of helpful chapters for developers who have not spent much time outside of the confines of the MVC framework. Discussions include the overall Application and Request life cycles starting at IIS and when they are mapped to ASP.NET and how they are translated to the MVC framework. A lot of MVC books just skim over this process and start with the controllers and actions, which is actually pretty deep into the life cycle and skips a ton of steps. The book covers HTTP modules and handlers and many ASP.NET services and life cycle events that every serious developer should know.

This book also includes some great content on the new ASP.NET Identity system and takes you through all the steps of setting up a simple but modern authentication system. A lot of books only skim the surface of this process and leave out a lot of code, but the author spends a couple chapters walking through this and it's very helpful. There are also some good chapters on caching, which can be a confusing topic (in my opinion).

A couple minor gripes: there are a couple less useful chapters. The chapter on server side mobile capabilities seems almost useless to me, and the author even admits some of what he is telling you is just for informational purposes and isn't practical in the real world. Some of the techniques he discusses for server side mobile detection and optimization are either dated, better served by some aspect of responsive design, or just kind of useless. However, I do think he does a good job of letting you know what features you should actually know about and pitfalls to avoid.

Overall this book was super helpful to me and really gave me a deeper understanding of the overall life cycle, underlying services, and architecture of an MVC application. This text filled in a lot of gaps and holes that other MVC specific books can create. If you already have extensive experience with the overall ASP.NET architecture you probably won't get as much out of this book, but if you're looking for something to deepen your understanding of ASP.NET as a newer MVC developer and take your application designs to the next level, this is a highly valuable book. No more hunting through Web Forms books to find information on a specific ASP.NET topic! Also, as a side note, this book is only about 400 pages long (including lots of code examples) and although dense, it is not some giant 1500 page reference book - you can actually read this cover to cover fairly easily.

An Awesome Classic Reference Guide for Horror Movie Fans

I really wanted the Overlook Film Encyclopedia or Horror Films to accompany the Sci-Fi version of the guide on my shelf, but sadly that book costs several hundred dollars and is long out of print. As best as I can tell this is pretty much the same thing- except it only goes up until 1985 (Some editions of the Overlook version cover films up until 1995) oh and it has different cover art. While I prefer the Bride of Frankenstein cover on the other one, I much much prefer the cost of this version. I don't really have much to add that hasn't already been said better by other reviewers- it's a great resource for those looking to make "to-watch" lists of classic movies they may have missed. It has great cross referencing glossaries in the back and the book is laid out chronologically by year. The synopses are brief and better written than many other film encyclopedias, and it takes a very academic approach to a genre that is often treated in a much more flippant manner. The mini-reviews are obviously written by experts on the genre, as they often contain pointed critical analysis and references to other films/directors/etc. that may be necessary to proper appreciation of the film. This is definitely the guide for those fans who take their horror films seriously and want to learn more about films they may have not seen. Any self-respecting fan needs this guide.

The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies

The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies is just that; it is the definitive textbook authority on all things Horror, spanning over eight decades of cinema. It is an important reference tool as well as a complete history lesson on the trends and growths that were experienced within the genre, beginning with the earliest silent classics and ending at the height of the Slasher era, when the book was published. The format is laid out chronologically, dividing each section by the decade and listing the films in alphabetical order by the year of their release in their original countries. Films from nearly every developed nation can be found within its pages, including many entries that are dedicated to the German Expressionists and Asian filmmakers, while also introducing many more obscure titles from countries like Austria or Brazil. Phil Hardy interjects with an informed opinion and rounded knowledge on each of the films being discussed. While his opinions on many of the entries will not be shared by all readers (particularly in his general distaste for the Slasher films), his critiques are always justified and rarely biased. Coming in at over 400 pages, with over 450 black and white stills and an astounding 1,300 film reviews, The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies is an absolute must-have for every Horror fan. It is impossible to thumb through its pages without discovering a slew of exciting new films that may have been long forgotten, but it is integral to read the text from start to finish rather than simply using it as a petty reference tool in order to better one's understanding of the genre.

Great reference for classic horror

This is a superior reference for horror movies. It traces the history of the horror genre from the earliest days of film by means of highly intelligent reviews of hundreds of movies. It also includes a list of major cast and crew members for each film. Although now a bit dated (it ends in 1985), it is a must for anyone who is interested in classic horror. A couple of warnings for those who may be interested: some of the stills that illustrate the book include nudity, and many of the reviews contain spoilers. However, anyone who loves horror movies in the pre-slasher era should find this tremendously entertaining and informative.
