Worst computer networking book ever !!!

This is by far the worst computer networking book ever written. it show how little the writer understand Networking and teaching.
The writer talks in chapters 1,2,3,4, and 5 about concepts not known until chapter 8,9, and 10; he simply jumps back and forth without any introductions. Any one who would use this book for a classroom does not deserve his job. Most likely he would be an online class attendant who will never read the book.

Did not enjoy this book at all. It does a poor job of outlining topics in networking in a cogent, sensible manner and instead lobs massive amounts of information and jargon at the reader without any real attempt at structuring introduction to topics for beginners. The book is incredibly dense and lacks effective visuals for a topic where understanding structure and sequences of events are so important. The book did not make going through the course any easier.

Ted Andrews (1952-2009) was an award-winning author and deeply respected teacher in the metaphysical and spiritual fields. Through his seminars, symposiums, workshops, and lectures, he was committed to making esoteric material comprehensible and practical for everyone.

Ted Andrew's many gifts included clairvoyancy, aura interpretation, past-life analysis, dreams interpretation, numerology, and Tarot. He wrote many books on these subjects, but is best known for his work with animal mysticism and for his bestselling Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small. Certified in basic hypnosis and acupressure, Andrews was also involved in the study and use of herbs as an alternative path in health care, focusing strongly on esoteric forms of healing with sound, music, and voice. In addition to his interest in metaphysics, Ted was a trained pianist and often used the Celtic harp, bamboo flute, shaman rattles, Tibetan bells, Tibetan Singing Bowl, and quartz crystal bowls to create individual healing therapies and induce higher states of consciousness.

Ted Andrews is the author of The Healer's Manual; Animal-Speak, How to See & Read the Aura; Enchantment of the Faerie Realm; Crystal Balls & Crystal Bowls; How to Uncover Your Past Lives; How to Heal with Color; Sacred Sounds; Simplified Qabala Magic; and many other New Age titles. He passed away on October 24, 2009.

Anyone who wants to understand healing better should read this book. While I understand that some people have a negative review because he passed away and did not live as long as they think he should have knowing what he did, do not understand that it has nothing to do with the accuracy of what he writes or his death.

I found it to be better than Barbri and maybe not quite a good as ...

This book was really, really helpful, The only thing is that our professor went into traditional/modern versions of fiduciary duties for corporations, and this book was kind of more post stone v. ritter. Still extremely helpful though. I found it to be better than Barbri and maybe not quite a good as Crunchtime (my favorite supplement, but the corporations one didn't include agency).

I highly recommend you get this book

My husband bought this for his Business Organizations class when he was in law school and said it made the difference between him passing with flying colors and completely failing the course! If you're struggling through a legal business class (or have a class coming up with a reputation for being tough, I highly recommend you get this book. It takes complex ideas and breaks them down into easy-to-understand concepts, without actually dumbing down the information (i.e., it helps you understand what you need to know without giving you the kindergarten version).

About the Author

Jeffrey Bennett specializes in mathematics and science education. In addition to his work in mathematics, Dr. Bennett (whose PhD is in astrophysics) has written leading college-level textbooks in mathematics, astronomy, statistics, and the new science of astrobiology, as well as books for the general public. He also proposed and developed both the Colorado Scale Model Solar System on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus and the Voyage Scale Model Solar System, a permanent, outdoor exhibit on the National Mall in Washington, DC. He has recently begun writing science books for children, including the award-winning Max Goes to the Moon and Max Goes to Mars.

 

William L. Briggs has been on the mathematics faculty at the University of Colorado at Denver for 22 years. He developed the quantitative reasoning course for liberal arts students at the University of Colorado at Denver, supported by his textbook Using and Understanding Mathematics. He is a University of Colorado President's Teaching Scholar, an Outstanding Teacher awardee of the Rocky Mountain Section of the MAA, and the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Ireland.

 

Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he taught statistics for more than 30 years. Marty is the author of Elementary Statistics, Elementary Statistics Using Excel, Elementary Statistics Using the TI-83/84 Plus Calculator, Essentials of Statistics, and a co-author of Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life, and Business Statistics. He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a “Texty” for Excellence, for his work on Elementary Statistics.

"People can come up with statistics to prove anything- Forfty percent of all people know that!"

Wise words from Homer Simpson notwithstanding, you might find yourself in agreement with him after a couple of months with Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life.

But perhaps I should backtrack. First and most important, this version of the book does NOT come with the MyStatLab access code. That edition can be found here: Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life Plus NEW MyStatLab with Pearson eText -- Access Card Package (4th Edition) It's a mere $9 more than this one, still at the (current) low price of $122.19.

Or, if you decide to play this one like I did, you rent the book for $21 and ask your professor if she has any spare access codes lying around. Pearson Publishing arms professors with a dozen or so free codes, and students never ask for them. A shame, considering I saved $100 by doing so. Anyway, moving on...

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess most people who are considering purchasing this book are either really intelligent, intrinsically-motivated high school students destined to change the world or mathematically-challenged college students who need to fulfill the dreaded math general education credit (don't feel bad if you're among the latter group- I am too, so you're not the ONLY moron who still can't math), which makes reviewing this slab of numbers kind of a useless exercise. I mean, you're going to have to buy it for class even if I tell you it sucks.

Fortunately, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life does not suck. In fact, it's organized, well-written, and quite accessible for us beginners. (Again, there's no shame in being stupid- we excel in other areas. Like history. Or intramural athletics.) Math has always been my Area of Great Weakness, but this book carried me through stats class with minimal frustration and zero headaches, which is more than I can say for literally every other tome of mathematics I have ever opened. However, it has one glaring flaw.

Let us visit exercise 20 from section 8.2 "Estimating Population Means." The problem reads: "An economist wants to estimate mean annual income from the first year of work for college graduates who have had the profound wisdom to take a statistics course. How many such incomes must be found if..."

Oh, you're trying to make me feel better about being an idiot? Don't patronize me, book. Take your propaganda elsewhere- preferably to the Science department.

Obviously, this is only one of many such examples. Apart from its self-aggrandizing ways and the occasional reference to something I've never heard of (book: "what would you estimate about Madagascar Ground Gecko populations?" me: "uhhhh..."), I really do have to give this book and its authors credit for writing something even dolts like me can understand without exerting too much of our limited brain power.

China via the Airlines Industry

I don't remember why I bought this book. I've been reading a good deal about China via other books, plus magazines and newspaper articles. While this book has occasional insights about the Chinese and their society, in general, it is mainly about the history of the aviation industry in China. This subject, I would think, would be of limited interest to most.

The author has a personal interest in air flight, and, of course, China needs to link its huge cities via airliners. Here is where the author knows his stuff: Beijing International Airport is the second busiest in the world behind Atlanta. Air China is the largest airline in the world as far as capitalization. China is adding airports like mad in parts of the country that have yet to have an airport. Today, more than 250,000 people work in the Chinese aviation industry.
When Henry Kissinger went to China, secretly, in 1971, its airports were closed to western traffic. Kissinger flew via Pakistani International Airlines in a Boeing 707, for which the Chinese did not have a proper walk-up ramp. They had to build one especially for the Kissinger visit.

Because of the long Sino-Japanese Wars, plus the horrible economic disasters in the country under Chairman Mao, the Chinese fell far behind the developed countries in air travel by the 70s. China used old Soviet plans before the Boeing 707s became available after President Nixon's visit in 1972. But China's aviation infrastructure was primitive. It was simply not in the position to monitor flights from airport towers, or to properly maintain planes, or to staff them with qualified pilots. Plus, there was reluctance on the part of Chinese pilots to criticize their superiors or those around them who might be failing and/or needing more training. It was up to Boeing to make this all work. After all, if there were plane crashes, the budding industry in China would grind to a halt.

Today, of course, building and maintaining infrastructure is China's thing. By 2025, China expects to have more than 220 cities with more than one million people. It needs airlines to link these cities to move people and cargo. But prior to the 90s, China had few certified pilots. The U.S. had 500,000 of them. Pilots had to be imported, and flight schools needed to be established. Another complication was that the Chinese military inherited control of all air traffic in the country.

The Chinese would eventually like to build their own airliners. But the author makes the point that this is not going to be easy. One source claims that making a reliable airliner is harder than sending a man to the moon. The author says that China will not be able to do it without coordinating with international expertise in airlines production. To date, for example, the Chinese-made jet engines have proved to be far inferior to U.S.-made jet engines.

But the author tells us that China is a country that has entered the modern era. Concerts by The Eagles have been selling out for years. And the Chinese know the words to the most popular tunes from that group. But in China, it can be all about balance and tension. The government in many ways wants tight controls, but in many ways it knows that it needs to foster innovation and the lack of controls. He says that China's government understands the "informal accountability" that is demanded of it in the age of the Internet, when huge groups can interact with each other instantaneously and news of a scandal or problem can spread like wildfire.

Having written all this, I guess I really did get something out of the book. On that basis, I would recommend it to others. It fills in some blanks in one's understanding of modern China.

very readable intro to China

An erudite and readable writer creates a short and enjoyable look at modern China through the lens of its attempts to create a modern air travel system. After reading this I feel that my understanding of China has gone from 10th percentile to at least 50th. My main takeaways are that China is much more vast and subject to much more competing interests than I had thought before. At the economic level the government is not controlling things exactly, it really is allowing for people to pursue whatever crackpot ideas they have. But it reaffirmed what I've read in foreign policy type books, which is that the military is an incredibly powerful institution that's not willing to give up power and in aviation especially is holding China back from reaching international standards. The most interesting of Fallows' analyses is his supposition that China unlike other powers of recent centuries has not yet put forth a vision for mankind, which hampers its ability to be a true world leader. China's world outreach is entirely about China, not at all about why anyone should care on any emotional level whether the Chinese system is successful...or about what a successful Chinese system could mean for them.

Real on the ground intel on China's aviation industry and much more

Piecing together the conundrum that is china is extremely difficult for those that have not spent much time in china. This book reveals with first hand accounts the tale of two cities that is china through the lens of an aviation enthusiast.

It considers many of the aspects required for china to ascend to a first class aviation designer and builder. But, places many of the requirements in the light of the author's experiences and the manner in which china operates today from both a government perspective but also a historical perspective providing context for the reader to assess the probabilities of success for china in this massive endeavor.

I found this book very helpful in filling in the pieces I needed to gain a better understanding of the current state of China's aviation industry. It also does a good job of revealing many of the personalities that have been instrumental in China's aviation ascendancy. The reason I gave this book five stars is that it does not come to any conclusions. It merely provides perspectives and context for the reader to come to his/her own opinion.

The detective story, focused on inquiries, and in its wake the spy novel, built around conspiracies, developed as genres in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During the same period, psychiatry was inventing paranoia, sociology was devising new forms of causality to explain the social lives of individuals and groups and political science was shifting the problematics of paranoia from the psychic to the social realm and seeking to explain historical events in terms of conspiracy theories. In each instance, social reality was cast into doubt. We owe the project of organizing and unifying this reality for a particular population and territory to the nation-state as it took shape at the end of the nineteenth century.

Thus the figure of conspiracy became the focal point for suspicions concerning the exercise of power. Where does power really lie, and who actually holds it? The national authorities that are presumed to be responsible for it, or other agencies acting in the shadows - bankers, anarchists, secret societies, the ruling class? Questions of this kind provided the scaffolding for political ontologies that banked on a doubly distributed reality: an official but superficial reality and its opposite, a deeper, hidden, threatening reality that was unofficial but much more real. Crime fiction and spy fiction, paranoia and sociology - more or less concomitant inventions - had in common a new way of problematizing reality and of working through the contradictions inherit in it.

The adventures of the conflict between these two realities - superficial versus real - provide the framework for this highly original book. Through an exploration of the work of the great masters of detective stories and spy novels - G.K. Chesterton, Arthur Conan Doyle, John Le Carré and Graham Greene among others - Boltanski shows that these works of fiction and imagination tell us something fundamental about the nature of modern societies and the modern state.

“An ambitious investigation of crime fiction and its relation to modern society”

Most of us take for granted the idea that the social world has a front stage made of rules and norms and a backstage of “intrigues,” “invisible plots,” and “hidden intentions.” When did that sense of a reality behind the reality of things develop? In this enigmatic book, Boltanski tracks down this new construction of a paranoid reality through a highly original reading of detective and spy novels, in which he detects the emergence of a sense that a sense that the real reality of things is concealed and malevolent. This book  is both singular and provocative and resembles no other work of sociology I have read. It is a mixture of sociology of literature, of meta-sociological theory, sociology of institutions,  and, perhaps mostly, sociology of modernity. It will be a needed complement to the classic The Social Construction of Reality.

REALITY FOR BEGINNERS

This is an odd book, and not the kind of offering I'm used to under the aegis of the UK Vine. It's an academic book, and although the author hopes that the popular novel-genres of detective stories and spy stories will attract a larger readership, the style is uncompromisingly academic to the point of parody. Try this, for instance `Especially when the causality in question has a social dimension, this trust is based on agencies that guarantee the regular attribution of events to pre-defined entities - among which, in the modern era, legal and governmental agencies play a preponderant role.'

The term `reality' is a sort of motto throughout the book. Boltanski toils away at the notion in the first chapter, it is the second last word of the whole book, so presumably he regards it as central to his argument. However `reality' is a slippery and dangerous expression. Boltanski largely uses it to mean no more than some state of affairs. That is a loose usage, but harmless in general. However he gets into problems with it in the first chapter by postulating different layers of reality. He seems to hint at two very dubious propositions without quite committing himself. One is that fiction can actually create some kind of reality: the other is that one kind of reality may be more real than another kind. In terms of `creating' reality Boltanski quotes Borges as saying `that history should copy literature is inconceivable', but then at the end citing Kafka's The Trial as showing how this piece of literature anticipated post-war communist trials. To me, all that shows is that Kafka could read the tealeaves accurately. If so he was not alone in that: people who never wrote a word could also see what was on the horizon, and neither they nor the novel brought it all about. As regards different levels of reality, p135 notes how this notion was popular with Christianity in its mystical phase. I'm not sure whether we are meant to read this reference back into the notion of different planes of reality within Boltanski's two classes of novels. I hope not, because that idea has enough problems of its own. As far as spy novels go, Boltanski doesn't make the staringly obvious point that they are escapist literature. They are supposed to create a hidden world for our entertainment, whether this world is real or fictitious. Boltanski notes with approval that Graham Greene and LeCarre had a personal background in espionage. If that is a point of commendation, then Kim Philby, a spy and traitor extraordinaire, has left us two books. I'm sure they are not the whole truth, but equally sure that what's there is true all right. And Philby is not even in this book's index.

As for detective stories, I honestly doubt whether the notion of different planes of reality even has any application. Professor Boltanski starts by invoking three sciences - sociology, psychiatry and political science, but he is a professor of sociology, and sociology is what this book is really(!) about. Psychiatry is smuggled on board under the rubric of paranoids and conspiracy theorists, thereby bringing in political science. This, however, is only more of his sociology. His early chapters on Sherlock Holmes and Maigret had tried to make these heroes into some kind of sociologists, but the real (!) sociologist was the good professor himself. One thing that is very noticeable is how much more at home Boltanski seems to be with his French actor. However the material on Holmes and his creator is perceptive, and he is surely right to see both Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie as giving uncritical acceptance to a hierarchical and deferential British society. Now there is of course a very famous essay by a very famous writer of detective stories that mocks the Agatha Christie tradition and postulates a new kind of detective hero who is a walking mass of sceptical social attitudes. However The Simple Art of Murder is not even mentioned, and Chandler, like Philby, is not even in the index.

As the book continues it becomes more and more of a sociology textbook, and the link (always more than a little contrived) to the two varieties of fiction paraded earlier gets more and more tenuous. However reality keeps bobbing up here and there (including in the envoi phrase), although it too seems more and more of an unwanted piece of flotation gear. I wonder whether Professor Boltanski is guilty of the specious reasoning that a `reality' (sc state of affairs) that needs some digging down to be got at is some kind of `deeper reality'. I hope not, because there ain't no such thing as that. `Reality' is just an abstract noun classifying any kind of `real' thing in its appropriate context. To call something `real' denies some kind of opposite. In J L Austin's brilliant and witty example, if someone were to refer to a real parrot, it's not likely that the implied opposite is a mirage; and if the reference were to a real oasis you can be sure that there is no implication that it might be stuffed. From Plato onwards philosophers (and, it seems, sociologists) have hacked away at giving some non-existent solidity to something that is nothing, namely `reality'.

There is no indication that this French author did not write the excellent if academic English of this book himself. I imagine most readers will find it heavy going, and I admit that I selected the book because of the link to two favourite types of fiction. That, I imagine, was the general idea. A 1000-word review can't possibly attempt to deal with the real sociological core of the material, which needs competent peer-reviewing in appropriate academic journals. However it is apparently being pitched at a more general readership, so I have tried to give an idea of what other general readers will find.
