Very frustrating...

Like almost all other reviewers of this book I must say this is an awful book to learn from. If you are taking a class from a teacher who is teaching from this book that will tell you a lot about the professor. Being that this book is from the early 90's, it is filled with very generic information that you're not sure is even still used in today's technology. The book has one generic(if any) example throughout the text pertaining to the homework questions at the end of the chapter. Everyday in class I was told my homework was wrong for following the example in the book because it is only a "suggestion" of how one would design the system. This is fine if the book is intriguing and leads you in the right direction, however this book does the opposite. It should be out of print and not used for classes taught in the 21st century.

Great Amazon Customer Service

This review concerns Amazon.com's customer service, not specifically this book. I rated it 3-stars only because that's the current average. I haven't actually started the course for which I need this book, so I can't comment on it's content.

I received this book in a slightly damaged condition, i.e., a small tear in the front cover. This would normally not be a big deal, but I expect a new book for which I paid $110 for to be in mint condition. Since I didn't have time to exchange it before my class started, I instead asked Amazon.com for a small credit, without specifying an amount. They replied to my email in just a few hours, offering a 20% refund to my credit card. I thought this was more than fair and a great example of taking care of a customer.

UPDATE 5/27/2010: I recently finished my college class with this book and I didn't like it. The text is very dated (just look at the copyright date). There were one or two parts I couldn't reconcile with other material provided by my college and my professor's answer to the problem was that Mano didn't even know about the issue when he wrote the book because it wasn't invented yet. Hmmmm, is it just me or should a computer text book be newer than 18 years old?

In all fairness, this text book was used for an introductory course, so many of the concepts it teaches are germane to a basic understanding of the topic. However, for the price, I expect updated material. If you need the book for college, then you don't have a choice, but if you want the book for your personal interest, I recommend finding a newer text.

Would give it 2 1/2 stars if I could

The book isn't really all that bad, the problem is that it can be confusing to some readers. Instead of giving a list of problems, I am going to go into some detail about one specific thing wrong with the book, which could be a BIG problem for some readers. It is this:

It seems like once or twice every couple paragraphs, Mano will give a one-sentence explanation or description of something; and then a sentence or two later in the same paragraph, he will attempt to make the same point again but by rewording and rearranging the original sentence. I found this so incredibly distracting that I could not finish the book. I think Mano is doing this, i.e. repeating himself, to embed a concept into the student's mind. Not a bad idea, but it is poorly implemented by Mano...

what was so distracting about this, is that even if the reader feels he understands the concept the first time it is presented, when he then reads the reworded version, the tendency is to say "hey, wait a minute, is this the same thing he said before, or do the two statements conflict? or is it new information? Or did I not understand the first time??" So then I, at least, would go back and reread the first statement, then again compare it to the second, until I was able to answer these questions for myself. So it really slowed down my reading. I don't know, maybe it's just the way I read.

I should mention that I was mainly trying to learn from the book by self-study, i.e. no professor, although I did take a microprocessors course about 15 years ago.

Well, I guess I was verbose :-> but I wanted to inform so that anyone who thinks that they also will be distracted by this, buy a different book (like Rafiquzzaman)

Nancy Tucker is a 21-year-old author and nanny. She suffered from both anorexia and bulimia nervosa throughout her teens, but is now on the road to recovery and began a degree at Oxford University to study Experimental Psychology in 2015. She lives in Oxford and London.

August has been an interesting month because I’ve started quite a few wonderful books, only to discontinue them halfway through. I can be a picky, fickle reader when I have an overabundance of reading material. That’s ironic, isn’t it?

I started Nancy’s memoir at work to get through a slow couple of hours, and was immediately entranced by the rawness of her literary voice. I still find it hard to believe that she was only twenty-one when she penned her memoir. In it she documents her life growing up in a lower middle class, blended family in London. Throughout her childhood, she’s plagued with the need to excel at all things and be perfect. Eventually this perfectionism ideation turns inward, when she realizes that all of her friends are smaller in size when compared to herself.

Nancy doesn’t glamorize her disorder or take the “woe is me” approach. Instead she offers a glimpse into her troubled mind, the voices that propel her to deny her body of nutrients, and the devastating effects this has on herself and those who love her. I especially understood her desire to come to terms with how something as harmless as “the diet” evolved into such a dangerous journey, and how recovery isn’t always linear.

"Recovery is recognising that some things have a place, but most do not; that, at any one time, some things will be in their place, but most will not – and that in these times there will still be a world which turns and a soul in your body and people who love you."

Small but beautiful

Super cute book although much smaller than I expected. Ordered it for my son's 3rd grade class to all sign and write their own thank you for... To their teacher who was retiring but when it arrived I quickly realized that there's no way a class of 28 could all even sign their names. It's my fault for not checking the deminsions but didn't think I'd have to. No longer have the book to measure but it's about the size of a sandwich. With that said the story is perfect for any teacher as a end of the school year gift. I just had my 2 children whom this teacher taught write heart felt notes in both the front and back cover.

Cute little book. I bought two for my sons' teachers. I had each of them write a little note on the inside cover to go along with their end of the year gifts. It seems that some people weren't happy about the size of the book, it is small but the dimensions are listed on the product description.

About the Author

David H. Perrin, PhD, ATC, FNATA, is provost and executive vice chancellor and professor of kinesiology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he previously served as dean of the School of Health and Human Performance. Before going to Greensboro, Perrin directed the athletic training education program at the University of Virginia from 1986 to 2001. His awards from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association include the Sayers “Bud” Miller Distinguished Educator Award, the Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award, the William G. Clancy Medal for Distinguished Athletic Training Research, and induction into the NATA Hall of Fame.

Perrin is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. For 13 years, he was also a member of the NATA Professional Education Committee, helping to write the guidelines for accreditation of both undergraduate and graduate athletic training education programs. In 2011, Perrin was elected a fellow of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. He was editor in chief of the Journal of Athletic Training from 1996 to 2004 and was the founding editor of the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation. He is author of Isokinetic Exercise and Assessment and Athletic Taping and Bracing, editor of the third edition of The Injured Athlete, and coauthor of Research Methods in Athletic Training.

In his free time, Perrin enjoys traveling, exercising, and vacationing at his lake cottage in Vermont.

This book is great and very informative!!! We all were reading it on xmas and it has brain challenges, optical illusions and great facts about why the brain acts and sees what it does. GREAT for those kids who don't care to read uninteresting books and very well written! A ++ to this book!

My 10 year old and 8 year old seem to really enjoy these and I have to tell you, I don't even understand some of them. Can someone tell me what is at the end of a rainbow? I said pot of gold but it is the letter W. So this book is letting us have some bonding time while getting everyone to think and get a few laughs in. They are mostly laughing at me which is fine =)

About the Author

Marge Lial (late) was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Her desire to educate both her students and herself inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was most recently affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, Marge’s travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She was particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks, involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

 

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, and now after more than twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching andmathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy, as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

 

David Schneider has taught mathematics at universities for more than 34 years and has authored 36 books. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. During most of his professional career, he was on the faculty of the University of Maryland—College Park. His hobbies include travel, dancing, bicycling, and hiking.

 

Callie Daniels has always had a passion for learning mathematics and brings that passion into the classroom with her students. She attended the University of the Ozarks on an athletic scholarship, playing both basketball and tennis. While there, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education as well as the NAIA Academic All-American Award. She has two Master’s degrees: one in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Missouri—Rolla, the second in Adult Education from the University of Missouri—St. Louis. Her hobbies include watching her sons play sports, riding horses, fishing, shooting photographs, and playing guitar. Her professional interests include improving success in the community college mathematics sequence, using technology to enhance students’ understanding of mathematics, and creating materials that support classroom teaching and student understanding.

Current college student taking College Algebra

I STRONGLY suggest you RENT this textbook. I rented it for around $25 from an Amazon marketplace seller. Unless you are a math major and love to collect math books, do yourself a favor - save some money and just rent this textbook. The suggested retail price of this textbook is insane, even used it is insanely expensive. Just rent the textbook, it will save you a ton of cash. Plus you won't have the burden of selling a used textbook, that you most likely will not get all of your money back out of. RENT IT!

I am currently taking College Algebra at my local community college, one night a week. I graduated high school in 2002, went to college for several years, but have yet to successfully complete college algebra (had to drop the class twice). I have always struggled with math, especially Algebra. I am a visual learner. Once I see a problem worked, either in person or in a book, I will understand it.

With this textbook, I am really struggling to understand some of the exercises. Some of the exercises are not thoroughly explained in the review. How can they expect you just to learn how to solve for H, with the area of a trapezoid using a linear equation - if they don't give an example? I honestly hate how textbooks do this! Now, my instructor only assigns a handful of odd numbered exercises. I of course complete the required exercises, but on my own - I work the rest of the exercises, even and odd. This textbook only provides the answers for the odd numbered problems. There is an issue with the answers in the back of the book, the sections are literally separated! For example, there are answers to "Solutions to Selected Exercises" for chapter 1.1 on page S-3. Then there are "Answers to Selected Exercises" for chapter 1.1 on page A-3. Why they separated these answers/solutions, whatever they want to call them, is beyond me. It can be confusing, how do you know if it is going to be in the Solutions or Answers section? I can not offer any advice other than to get you some 3M tabs and mark both sections. That way you will at least be able to differentiate the two sections easily.

So for you students that are like me and really want to learn the material, for the knowledge and the grade, I STRONGLY SUGGEST you purchase or rent the 10th EDITION ANNOTATE INSTRUCTOR'S EDITION (ISBN 978-0321501486). The Instructor's Edition contains all the answers to the even and odd numbered exercises. The answers are contained in the back of the textbook (solution and answers are in separate sections too) and the answers are also in the margin on the actual page. So, on page 89 - the answers to exercises 17-58 are in the margins. It is important for me to mention that the so far, from what I have seen, the material and exercises are the same (only reviewed up to section 1.4 so far). There are nine noted differences in the preface of the 11th edition. Some mention that there are new diagrams, new art graphics, some new exercises, etc. I have not yet found any of these differences, but I am sure I will. The most noteable difference between the 10th and 11th editions, is the size. The 11th edition is larger.

If you struggle even a little with College Algebra, get your required textbook for class AND get the Instructor's Edition to keep at home. I choose to have the required textbook because I want to literally be on the same page as my instructor and classmates. I choose to keep the Instructor's Edition at home because 1) I don't want to be bombarded with questions from anyone on what it is, 2) I don't want anyone to think that I am cheating, 3) I don't want to give anyone any reason to report me as cheating on the tests. So if you do purchase the instructor's edition, consider keeping it at home. If you are an online student, still get the book you are required to have. Point is, just use the Instructor's Edition as a supplement to check your answers.

Next item is the Student Solutions Manual, ISBN 9780321791382 - RENT IT! This textbook provides the SOLUTION to the odd numbered exercises. It doesn't just provide the answer, it details what the solution is that results in the answer. This will help you understand the exercises that the textbook never reviewed. I have rented this textbook as well. This an excellent resource to have at home to check your answers. If you have answered an exercise wrong, you can check the solution to see what you did wrong. I have used solutions manuals just like this before, they saved me from worrying about if I got a exercise wrong or not. This book, I will take to class with me. This is specifically published for students to use. Keep in mind, if you rented your 11th edition textbook, you only need to rent the Student Solutions Manual (if it is cheaper to buy instead of rent, do that).

Only buy the kindle version if you have a kindle!

Do NOT buy this kindle version unless you have a kindle or tablet and are prepared to ONLY read it from the tablet! Amazon has prevented the ebook from being opened in kindle cloud reader, meaning that you can only read the ebook on your phone or tablet or kindle. They have not changed the formatting in order to even make this feasible, meaning in order to read the ebook you have to constantly zoom in and out, which makes it very difficult to read or study or even do homework problems. This is exceedingly frustrating and makes everything much more difficult. Ebooks are supposed to be MORE convenient, not less!

Poorly written and organized book

THE 2 OUT OF 5 IS FOR THE AUTHORS OF THIS BOOK AND NOT THE SELLER. I dont like this book at all. The examples are super easy, and the examples are completely different. You will get really really frustrated with this book be warned. Get the solutions manual. Between the solutions manual and youtube, I was able to figure it out. Often, really important details are casually buried in a paragraph of text when it should have been highlighted. Poorly written and organized book but it's for college so had to get it.

Crisis Worth Examining

This well researched book looks at the financial crisis in New York City. Phillips-Fein organized the material according to the origins of the crisis, the crisis itself, and its legacies. He exposes the flaws created by the public sector and the inability of the citizen to change policies that affect their daily lives. She does not presume to have all the answers, but she did a fine job defining and highlighting the problems. Philips-Fein is a historian and teaches at the Gallatin School of Individualized Studies at New York University.

I was randomly chosen through a Goodreads Giveaway to receive this book free from the publisher. Although encouraged, I was under no obligation to write a review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

previous editions have been an excellent resource. It seems ok as a resource

The biggest thing I despise about this text is the quality of paper and binding. You can slowly flip the page, as careful as possible, and still have the page pull away from the binding. It is poorly made. According to the professor, previous editions have been an excellent resource. It seems ok as a resource. It explains procedure and necessary theory okay. Many spelling, charts, and error calculations can be found throughout text.

Poor quality print & ambiguous examples

Some parts are ok. But a lot of examples don't even put the equation, so you're left wasting tons of time figuring out how they got the numbers they're using. If you want to find the pages where they pull the equations to the example from -- hope you have a good time -- the pages literally rip and fall out from gentle/minimal use.

About the Author
Dr. Maud Nerman has been in practice for over three decades, helping patients recover from injury and addressing complex medical conditions. Her specialties include osteopathic manual medicine, cranial osteopathy, and classical homeopathy. A Stanford University graduate, Dr. Nerman attended medical school at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Nerman lectures throughout the U.S. on osteopathic medicine and regularly teaches advanced courses for medical professionals on the treatment of brain injury and trauma. Dr. Nerman is currently an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Vallejo, California

A definite guide for anyone who is dealing with pain

I have been sick for the past 10 years and I have researched extensively the field of pain and trauma. I have read tens of books on the topics. Dr Nerman's book is the first one that actually summarized for me potential root causes of what I might be going through, helped me think about what I could do to help myself and gave me some concrete steps that I could do right away. She includes different methodologies that can be used easily such as yoga and homeopathy in addition to her experience as a DO. This book is very comprehensive, concrete and helpful.

Knowledge is power when healing yourself!

Knowledge is power in managing our own health! This book is like an encyclopedia of information on the human body and how to help it heal.
In each chapter Nerman gives clear and concise information on the nature of a problem and what the lay person can do to help heal oneself. I keep returning to various chapters over and over: not because I am injured, but because I find the information fascinating.
Buy the book and keep it in a handy place in your house and you will do the same thing. I have never encountered such a thorough book on issues and problems that occurr in our bodies and how we can help ourselves.

This book will forever change the way you look at your body!

I was hit by a car as an adolescent and suffered traumatic brain injury as a result - causing debilitating migraines and the persistent feelings of anxiety and panic. This book illuminates the mechanisms in your body that cause the symptoms that are a result of traumatic injury and gives you the tools to facilitate your own healing. It will change the way you look at your body and help you realize that the miracle that comprise the various symptoms in your body are your greatest ally on your road to recovery.
