From School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—A viscerally affecting story of war, loss, and the power of friendship. Pennypacker, author of the exuberant "Clementine" series (Disney-Hyperion) and the charmingly morbid Summer of the Gypsy Moths (HarperCollins, 2012), here displays not only her formidable writing skills and a willingness to stretch her storytelling into increasingly complex narrative forms but also her ability to tackle dark and weighty themes with sensitivity and respect for the child reader. Set in an intentionally undefined time and place that could very well be a near-future America, the novel opens with a heartbreaking scene of a tame red fox, Pax, being abandoned at the side of the road by his beloved boy, Peter. Perspectives alternate between the boy and the fox, and readers learn that a terrible war rages in this land. Peter's father is about to leave for the frontlines, and while he's away, Peter must live with his grandfather out in the country—and his father makes it clear that there is no place for Pax in Peter's temporary home. Almost as soon as he arrives at his grandfather's, Peter is overcome with guilt, and he sets off under the cover of darkness to trek the 300 miles back to his home, where he prays he'll find Pax. The loyal fox, meanwhile, must figure out how to survive in the wild—though never losing hope that his boy will return for him. As the protagonists struggle to reunite in a world in the grip of violence and destruction, they each find helpers who assist them on their respective journeys: Peter breaks his foot and is rehabilitated by Vola, a hermit suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, while Pax is taken in by a leash of foxes who teach him the basics of foraging and hunting. Pennypacker doesn't shy away from some of the more realistic aspects of war, though she keeps most of the violence slightly off-screen: in one scene, the wild foxes define war for the naive Pax as a "human sickness" that causes them to turn on their own kind, akin to rabies; later, as the battle creeps closer, several creatures are maimed and killed by land mines. Black-and-white drawings by Klassen offer a respite for readers, while adding to the haunting atmosphere. With spare, lyrical prose, Pennypacker manages to infuse this tearjerker with a tender hope, showing that peace and love can require just as much sacrifice as war. VERDICT A startling work of fiction that should be read—and discussed—by children and adults alike.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

“…You Will Find A Truth of Your Own …”
By delicateflower152
Targeted at the 8 – 12 year old group, Sara Pennypacker’s latest novel “Pax” is a book that carries universal truths and one that will touch readers of any age. Illustrated by Jon Klassen, the pen and ink drawings contained in the book enhance the story, strengthening the overall impact of the passages associated with each specific drawing.

Set in an unidentified country during an unspecified time, “Pax” serves to remind readers that war and destruction may affect anyone – or anything. Twelve-year old Peter has cared for his pet fox, “Pax”, for five years. Orphaned as a kit, “Pax” is now as domesticated as any wild animal can be; he has never had to survive in the wild. “…distrust is no match for kindness administered consistently and unmeasured …”

Having enlisted in the army, Peter’s father takes his son to live with his grandfather and demands that Peter release “Pax” back into the wild. Knowing Peter would not abandon him “Pax” waits patiently for his return. “…Pax would stay …ignore all temptations …until his boy came for him …” Haunted by his belief he has betrayed “Pax”, Peter leaves his grandfather’s home to recover his pet. A broken leg, an encounter with an amputee-veteran whose unnamed war occurred twenty years previously, and a realization – by both Peter and “Pax” – that each must be true to his own nature creates an emotional, poignant story that will touch your heart.

Writing in the third person voice, Sara Pennypacker alternates the focus of “Pax” between developments affecting Peter and those in which “Pax” learns what it is to be a fox. Each chapter remains true to the focal character. In Peter’s, the reader learns about his life and his past. "…if he could visit the kind-eyed therapist, he’s smash those toy cars …Just to make everybody see …” The reader also watches Peter grow in his understanding of himself and of others. Talking to his benefactor about her war experience, Peter empathizes with her emotional state and begins to formulate a plan that will free her from her self-imposed exile. In Pax’s chapters, the narrative does not humanize the animals but remains realistic when it details the actions and responses to their surroundings. By Sara Pennypacker doing so, those portions of the narrative seems less fictitious and more like an appealing nature documentary. In both characters’ chapters, the horrors and the impact of war overshadow the narrative.

One of Jon Klassen’s drawings, shown on pages 164 and 165, is quite memorable. The shadowing and use of contrasting white ”rain” against the darker background drawing is the strongest in terms of atmosphere and locale.

“Pax” is a novel that will touch your heart. It is suitable for the target age group as well as anyone who loves an outstanding story. I recommend that parents or grandparents read “Pax” before sharing it with younger, advanced readers or with those in the target age group who may be very sensitive.

The Development of an Extraordinary Species

We human beings share 98 percent of our genes with chimpanzees. Yet humans are the dominant species on the planet -- having founded civilizations and religions, developed intricate and diverse forms of communication, learned science, built cities, and created breathtaking works of art -- while chimps remain animals concerned primarily with the basic necessities of survival. What is it about that two percent difference in DNA that has created such a divergence between evolutionary cousins? In this fascinating, provocative, passionate, funny, endlessly entertaining work, renowned Pulitzer Prize–winning author and scientist Jared Diamond explores how the extraordinary human animal, in a remarkably short time, developed the capacity to rule the world . . . and the means to irrevocably destroy it.

Amazon.com Review
Jared Diamond states the theme of his book up-front: "How the human species changed, within a short time, from just another species of big mammal to a world conqueror; and how we acquired the capacity to reverse all that progress overnight." The Third Chimpanzee is, in many ways, a prequel to Diamond's prize-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel. While Guns examines "the fates of human societies," this work surveys the longer sweep of human evolution, from our origin as just another chimpanzee a few million years ago. Diamond writes:

It's obvious that humans are unlike all animals. It's also obvious that we're a species of big mammal down to the minutest details of our anatomy and our molecules. That contradiction is the most fascinating feature of the human species.

The chapters in The Third Chimpanzee on the oddities of human reproductive biology were later expanded in Why Is Sex Fun? Here, they're linked to Diamond's views of human psychology and history.

Diamond is officially a physiologist at UCLA medical school, but he's also one of the best birdwatchers in the world. The current scientific consensus that "primitive" humans created ecological catastrophes in the Pacific islands, Australia, and the New World owes a great deal to his fieldwork and insight. In Diamond's view, the current global ecological crisis isn't due to modern technology per se, but to basic weaknesses in human nature. But, he says, "I'm cautiously optimistic. If we will learn from our past that I have traced, our own future may yet prove brighter than that of the other two chimpanzees." --Mary Ellen Curtin

From Library Journal
Research biologist (Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands) Diamond argues that the human being is just a third species of chimpanzee but nevertheless a unique animal essentially due to its capacity for innovation, which caused a great leap forward in hominoid evolution. After stressing the significance of spoken language, along with art and technology, Diamond focuses on the self-destructive propensities of our species to kill each other (genocide and drug abuse) and to destroy the environment (mass extinctions). He also discusses human sexuality, geographic variability, and ramifications of agriculture (metallurgy, cultivated plants, and domesticated animals). Absent from Diamond's work is the role religion plays in causing both war and the population explosion as well as long-range speculations on the future of our species. This informative, most fascinating, and very readable book is highly recommended for all libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
Plenty of provocative ideas in this grand sweep of evolutionary biology and anthropology: not surprising for this MacArthur ``genius'' Award-winner, Natural History columnist, and UCLA Medical School physiology professor. With only 1.6 percent difference between the human genome and the genomes of two species of chimps, Diamond declares that we should call ourselves ``the third chimpanzee.'' (Curiously, he fails to mention neoteny as making a world of genetic difference.) Diamond first reviews human evolution, ending with the great leap forward that he attributes to language. New in this area is a discussion of animal art and communication (e.g., bowerbird constructions, vervet-monkey talk) and creolization (the development of sophisticated human languages from pidgin forms). With respect to other human features, Diamond reprises all the theories you've ever heard about sexual behavior, selection, menstruation, menopause, etc. Ditto for aging. He steers a common- sense course between extremes, opting for the games-theory approach of optimizing one's genes and of group survival. Old-but-not- fertile elders are essential imparters of knowledge for the group. A chapter on self-destructive behaviors (smoking, drinking, drug abuse) offers the peculiar theory that we do it to advertise that we are really superior because we can flaunt handicaps! No mention is made of the fit of the chemicals to receptors in the brain and to circuits evoking pleasure. Later, drawing on his special knowledge of New Guinea, Australia, and Polynesia, and his research on birds, Diamond provides a fascinating if overwhelmingly pessimistic view of human predation through genocide, species and resource destruction, and potential nuclear disaster. Conclusions of continued human, species, and planetary destruction are inescapable, in spite of Diamond's optimism that we can learn from the past and some modest success he has had with conservation programs. Quirky arguments at times, yes, but generally Diamond is as sharp as his name. (Twenty-five line drawings and halftones.) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

On language, a Diamond in the rough
By Monty Vierra
There are so many reviews here that I have not been able to read all of them. However, several have adequately covered the main points of the book, so I won't do so here. Instead, I am reviewing one portion of the book, that dealing with language, in particular chapter 8, "Bridges to Human Language," but also other, related pages.

I have given his discussion of human language three stars because of its over reliance on English, or languages like English, as "the" default language of all languages. (To understand my criticism, I will need to give some "grammar" explanations below. Please bear with me.)

We get a hint of this dependence on mainly European languages on page 56, where he refers to our ability to "perfect" language with such things as "word order and case endings and tenses." Tenses refer to the way we change verbs to refer to different times and conditions in time, the so-called present, past, and future. For example, in English we say "I go," "I went," "I will go". For many verbs in English, we mark the past tense by adding -ed at the end. (In British English, some verbs add a final -t, like "learnt".) Many languages have this kind of verb changing feature, as anyone who has studied French, German, or Spanish knows. But not all languages note time by changing or marking the verb. Chinese and Vietnamese, for example, do not, and they get along quite nicely without them.

The second item Diamond notes are case endings; these refer mainly to the way languages mark things like who the speaker is, who receives something, who owns something, and so on. It's funny Diamond should select case endings as an example of "perfecting" a language, because English has all but eliminated them in the last 500 years. The closest we have are pronouns like I, me, my, and mine.

As for word order, over 90% of the world's languages that have been studied have a dominant word order, but about 10% do not. The word order of English, Subject-Verb-Object (SVO), can be found in about 40% of languages. (SVO example: She reads the newspaper in the morning.) Slightly more languages put the verb at the end (SOV). Japanese and Korean are examples of that word order.

On page 153, Diamond goes on to add things like "prefixes, suffixes, and changes in word roots" to his list of what he thinks make up "grammar."

Given that so many languages do NOT fit Diamond's prescription for "perfected" human languages, we have to wonder how he could have made the assumptions about language that he did. We get a clue on page 155 where he speaks of his encounter with Fore, a "deliciously complex" language spoken on New Guinea. From page 156, though, we discover that his encounter with "creole" and "pidgin" languages were what convinced him that English was the paradigm. Actually, he got his idea from Derek Bickerton, a student of Noam Chomsky who took Chomsky's idea of "universal grammar" to mean a single, default setting for all languages, the way English is the "default" setting of Microsoft Word. Bickerton came to his conclusion after studying a language that grew up in Hawaii during the late 19th century when workers in the cane fields and pineapple fields from many different countries had to work out a way to communicate with each other. What they came up with was a "pidgin," a simplified language that took bits from here and there. Later, their children made it into a working language with its own definite structure. Diamond, following Bickerton, believed that because the rich, white, English-speaking owners of the plantations didn't mix with the farm laborers it would have been impossible for the children to have acquired or picked up the English pattern of SVO. Yet, they came up this word order! Amazing. How could it have happened?

According to Diamond/Bickerton, all languages are basically SVO, and anything else is a variation on that. Unfortunately, such a thesis doesn't explain how the largest group of languages in the world are SOV, and not SVO. A closer look at the languages that the children's parents spoke gives a more likely explanation: Enough workers already spoke an SVO language to begin with, languages like Portuguese, Spanish, and Chinese. It is also not impossible for the kids growing up to have become familiar with English.

Although Diamond says he doesn't "want to exaggerate" and imply that creoles are all "essentially the same" (page 162), he does just that in the following pages. Most damning is his argument that "creoles derived from languages with a different word order...use the subject-verb-object order" (163). When I first read this, I scribbled in the margin, "Name one." He doesn't. And there don't seem to be any. As linguist Asya Pereltsvaig writes, "[We] know of no [spoken] creole whose substrate and superstrate languages were both non-SVO" (Languages of the World, page 241).

[However, see Pereltsvaig's book (page 244) for a discussion of a sign language developed in Nicaragua that seems to support Bickerton's argument. Languages of the World is available on Amazon.]

Turning real languages on their head and making SVO creole languages the "default," Diamond then goes on to bumble around with preposterous claims about English, including that of his own children! His first stumble comes when he discusses questions. True, many languages do not change word order when they ask a question (page 164). For example, "You want juice" can be a statement about what you want, and it can also be a question, "You want juice?" Although we often change word order, English can use the same structure. We accomplish this by changing our sentence intonation--our voice goes up at the end. According to Diamond, English "does not treat questions in this way." But, as I have just shown, we do. We do it all the time. True, we have other ways of asking questions--"Do you want juice?"--but we are not limited by some rule of school boy grammar that Diamond thinks we slavishly follow.

Diamond isn't satisfied with that example. He gives us next, "Where are you?" This, he says, inverts the subject and the verb. But it does much more than that: It puts the "object" at the start of the sentence, turning it into OSV! He contrasts "Where are you?" with "Where you are?", some imaginary language, I guess. Take real languages like Chinese and Vietnamese. They don't put the "where" up front. They put it at the end: "You are where." Now, any simpleton can comprehend this as a question, but just for confirmation those two languages can add a "question" particle at the end.

As it turns out, English also has "where you are," but it's not a question. It's a subordinate clause. For instance, your friend/child calls you to pick them up but there's too much noise on the other end when they say where they are. Instead of asking "where are you?" you can say, "Sorry, I can't hear where you are. Say it again." Here, the clause "where you are" is an OSV clause that serves as the "object" of the main verb.

I hope readers are not too annoyed by all this minute grammar talk, but it just goes to show that English is really complex and can accomplish many communicative purposes in a number of ways. Yet all languages have such power.

To sum up, my point in this review is that Diamond has greatly over simplified matters through an over reliance on a poorly attested hypothesis. There really is no good ground for trying to make all of the world's languages subordinate to English--or, one step removed, "the creole word order." The SVO order of creole languages is largely influenced by the membership of an SVO language in the mix. In the last four or five hundred years of European colonialism, it would be a surprise if creoles did not form using this major option. To the list of Guns, Germs, and Steel, we should add language.

Same book - different titles
By i-Palikar
What I fail to see mentioned in any of the reviews thus far is the fact that this book (`The Third Chimpanzee') is essentially identical to a previous version under a different title by Jared Diamond, namely," The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee: How Our Animal Heritage Affects the Way We Live" circa 1991. Interestingly, the reviews of that book (`The Rise and Fall') also fails to mention that it is a previous version of this updated book (`The Third Chimpanzee'). Upon comparison, the differences appear to be quite minimal; the general thrust is identical. Nothing about this relationship is mentioned at the Jared Diamond page either. However, please be aware that with very little effort the older version (`The Rise and Fall') can be found in a free PDF format.

Diamond's Best Book
By Robert V. Rose, retired education researcher
Dr Diamond wrote this wonderful book by describing three themes. First by recapitulating the geographical, rather than the genetic reasons why Europeans have dominated the world, as in his "Guns Germs and Steel", secondly, he describes humanity's impending demise by neglecting the environment as in his "Collapse". And finally, he introduces he describes the new idea that humans share many traits with their closest relatives, chimpanzees. (Though he doesn't seem to understand that one can tell the sex of a chimp just by looking at its humanoid face.)

Very nice style, and niche
By Theophilus
What I like about this is the big pages, big words, big clear topologies, lots of screen shots of the CLI and wireshark.

This book is fairly brief in its treatment of some topics, so I would recommend something like Odom, for deeper treatment and as a second source...but this is a nice easy and fast read that really gets to the point, with great very clear examples. This makes a great review before your exam, or as a handbook for configurations. Not so strong on theory.

Unique and highly recommended for your library. Some books read more like a chore, this one is just plain fun.

Will be purchasing Switch and Troubleshoot

I loved reading this book and learned a lot!
By Firas K
I really endorse the author of this book as he explained a not-so-easy material in a very simple and fun way. One of the things I liked about his style of writing is that he directs his attention directly to the reader. It's like both Rene and the reader are having a conversation with each other. He also did a good job explaining concepts and examples with clear drawings, diagrams, and tables. In terms of the knowledge and information you get from reading this book, it's not 100% comprehensive and complete. However, I really encourage readers who are studying this material for the first time to read this book first before buying bigger reference books in the future as it will surely prepare them for the bigger challenges awaiting.

Great Resource for CCNP Route
By Shane M Taylor
Of all the resources I have read for the CCNP Route so far this one is at the top of my list. For those of you who are visual learners this book provides many graphic examples to explain EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, etc. in more detail. For me it is a great reinforcement of what I learned in CCNA R&S and also to fill in my knowledge gaps where needed.

Stories with Intent: A Comprehensive Guide to the Parables of Jesus, by Klyne R. Snodgrass

Stories with Intent offers pastors and students an accessible and comprehensive guide to Jesus' parables. Klyne Snodgrass explores in vivid detail the context in which these stories were told, the purpose they had in Jesus' message, and the ways they have been interpreted by the church and modern scholarship. While holding a consciously evangelical approach, Snodgrass deals throughout with a broad spectrum of opinions and interpretations.

He begins by surveying the primary issues in parables interpretation. Offering both a new, more functional classification system for Jesus' parables and guidelines for interpreting them, he provides an overview of other parables -- often neglected in the discussion -- from the Old Testament, Jewish writings, and the Greco-Roman world. The remaining chapters group the longer and more important parables of Jesus thematically and give a comprehensive treatment of each, including background and significance for today.

CHOICE
"This book will become an academic standard for the study of parables and Jesus. Essential. (Four Stars)."

Graham Stanton
— University of Cambridge
"This book is a simply stunning achievement. Klyne Snodgrass discusses Jesus' parables with theological sensitivity, with careful attention to comparable Jewish and Greco-Roman traditions, and in dialogue with the mountain of secondary literature. Scholar and student alike will appreciate its admirable clarity and its numerous fresh suggestions. This wide-ranging book has no rival: it will bethe book on the parables for the next decade and beyond."

Arland J. Hultgren
— Luther Seminary
"Convinced that the parables are the most certain avenue for access to Jesus' teaching, Klyne Snodgrass analyzes all of them with skill, care, and imagination. As a seasoned teacher and scholar, he outlines steps for the interpreter to follow, provides historical and cultural background materials, and engages the parables theologically. No one has located the parables as clearly and forcefully within the prophetic tradition of Israel, thereby providing a new approach to their vitality."

Darrell Bock
— Dallas Theological Seminary
"Bravo! Stories with Intent is the culmination of Klyne Snodgrass's lifetime of reflection on the parables. It shows a wealth of discernment in the clarity of its presentation, the soundness of its reasoning, the choice of citation and parallels, and the care of its argument. No study of the parables is as crisply structured as it answers the questions readers often raise about these stories. Here is a book with intent, and it succeeds exceptionally well in opening up a key dimension of Jesus' ministry and teaching."

Charles H. Talbert
— Baylor University
"I have been looking for a book like this on the parables all my career. I celebrate its appearance."

It contains an abundance of well-arranged valuable information about the history of research and the Old Testament, Jewish, Greco-Roman, and social backgrounds of the parables, at the same time leading readers to the center of Jesus' teaching. Currents in Theology & Mission
“This is a rich resource for preaching and adult education. One will not exhaust its resources in a lifetime of parable study.”

Well-organized, Well-researched book
By Dataman
Stories with Intent can best be classified as a resource manual, comprehensive guide, or handbook on the parables of Jesus. Klyne Snodgrass explores the context in which these stories were told, their purpose, and the ways they have been interpreted by the church and modern scholarship. Snodgrass begins with an introduction to the parables that includes a history of parables, a definition of a parable, the classification of parables, allegorization, characteristics of Jesus' parables, and the interpretation of parables. He also provides an overview of other parables from the Old Testament, Jewish writings, and the Greco-Roman world.

As Snodgrass takes up each parable (categorized thematically), he provides an introduction, discusses the parable type, lists issues requiring attention, looks at helpful source material, offers a comparison of the various accounts of the parable, discusses textual features worthy of attention, highlights relevant cultural information, and offers an explanation of the parable. Finally, he includes a section on adapting the parable for today. He deals throughout with a wide spectrum of opinions and interpretations, readily admitting when the answers to questions are open to interpretation. He thoughtfully deals with the question of historical reconstructions of the life of Jesus. He wisely questions a number of dubious assumptions behind much previous work on the parables.

This is a well-organized, incredibly well-researched book written that shows immersion in a vast variety of sources. Snodgrass is usually clear, but the discussion at times bogs down in discussions that are ponderous. A frequent complaint is the use of endnotes instead of footnotes. In many ways, Snodgrass represents evangelical scholarship at its best: mature, thoughtful, and balanced. His book, Stories with Intent, ranks with prominent evangelical works by such authors such as Arland J. Hultgren. In terms of its research, it has no rivals. Stories with Intent is a tremendous resource for pastors, scholars, and students.

Outstanding Resource on the Parables
By Brian G Hedges
Since I'm now preaching a short series on The Parables of Jesus, I recently purchased and started reading Klyne Snodgrass's Stories with Intent: A Comprehensive Guide to the Parables of Jesus. Comprehensive it is. This book is 846 pages long (though over 300 pages of this are bibliography and notes)! But though it is comprehensive, it is written with preachers in mind. As Snodgrass admits in his preface, "This is unapologetically and quite consciously a selfishly motivated book. This is what I want when preparing to teach or preach on the parables" (p. xi). It's what I want, too, and I'm glad Snodgrass gave in to his selfish ambition!

Snodgrass begins, of course, with an "Introduction to the Parables of Jesus," in which he covers (these are the subheadings): Necessary History; What is a Parable?; How Should Parables Be Classified?; What about Allegory?; Characteristics of Jesus' Parables; Distribution of the Parables; How Should Parables Be Interpreted?; and NT Criticism - Assumptions and Hesitations, Method and Procedure.

He lists eleven characteristics of Jesus' parables:

1. Jesus' parables are first of all brief, even terse.
2. Parables are marked by simplicity and symmetry.
3. Jesus' parables focus mostly on humans.
4. The parables are fictional descriptions taken from everyday life.
5. Parables are engaging.
6. Since they frequently seek to reorient thought and behavior . . . parables often contain elements of reversal.
7. With their intent to bring about response and elements like reversal, the crucial matter of parables is usually at the end, which functions something like the punch line of a joke.
8. Parables are told into a context. This distinguishes the parables from Aesop's fables, which are stand alone morality tales. Jesus' parables, in contrast, are "not general storeis with universal truths" but "are addressed to quite specific contexts in the ministry of Jesus."
9. Jesus' parables are theocentric.
10. Parables frequently allude to OT texts.
11. Most parables appear in larger collections of parables.

And, in discussing how to interpret the parables, Snodgrass offers the following principles:

1. Analyze each parable thoroughly.
2. Listen to the parable without presupposition as to its form or meaning.
3. Remember that Jesus' parables were oral instruments in a largely oral culture.
4. If we are after the intent of Jesus, we must seek to hear a parable as Jesus' Palestinian hearers would have heard it.
5. Note how each parable and its redactional shaping fit with the purpose and plan of each Evangelist.
6. Determine specifically the function of the story in the teaching of Jesus.
7. Interpret what is given, not what is omitted. Any attempt to interpret a parable based on what is not there is almost certainly wrong.
8. Do not impose real time on parable time.
9. Pay particular attention to the rule of end stress.
10. Note where the teaching of the parables intersects with the teaching of Jesus elsewhere.
11. Determine the theological intent and significance of each parable.

Some of these principles, admittedly, need a bit more explanation and fleshing out than I am choosing to do in this review, but many of the principles are self-evident. This list at least gives you an idea of how Snodgrass approaches the task of interpretation.

The next section covers Parables in the Ancient World, looking specifically at parables in the Old Testament, Early Jewish Writings, Greco-Roman Writings, The Early Church, and Later Jewish Writings. After that, Snodgrass jumps in to the actual parables themselves, dividing thirty-two parables into nine sections. These sections are entitled:

* Grace and Responsibility
* Parables of Lostness
* The Parable of the Sower and the Purpose of Parables
* Parables of the Present Kingdom in Matthew 13, Mark 4, and Luke 13
* Parables Specifically about Israel
* Parables about Discipleship
* Parables about Money
* Parables concerning God and Prayer, and
* Parables of Future Eschatology

As Snodgrass takes up each parable, he discusses the parable type, raises issues requiring attention, looks at helpful primary source material, does a comparison of the different accounts of the parable in the gospels, discusses textual issues worth noting, highlights helpful cultural information, then gives an explanation of the parable, talks about adapting the parable for our own context, and suggests further reading (as if he were not comprehensive enough for most people!). This really is a well organized book, designed to function more like a manual for ongoing reference, than to read straight through (which I'm not doing).

Finally, the book ends with an epilogue, six appendices, over one hundred pages of notes and almost fifty pages of bibliography, and then two indices. I expect to use this book not only in my current sermon series, but for many years to come and heartily recommend it to others.

Yes, Comprehensive!
By Trevor F.
The word 'Comprehensive' says it all. This is an excellent book. Clearly, Snodgrass knows his topic. It is very scholarly, but extremely readable for any person who wants to know more about Jesus parables. It takes into account so much detail about every parable, and gives the reader lots of useful quotes and helpful comments. It is well footnoted, and is to be commended to general readers, students, pastors, teachers and academics.

The Wild Truth, by Carine McCandless

The spellbinding story of Chris McCandless, who gave away his savings, hitchhiked to Alaska, walked into the wilderness alone, and starved to death in 1992, fascinated not just New York Times bestselling author Jon Krakauer, but also the rest of the nation. Krakauer's book,Into the Wild, became an international bestseller, translated into thirty-one languages, and Sean Penn's inspirational film by the same name further skyrocketed Chris McCandless to global fame. But the real story of Chris’s life and his journey has not yet been told - until now. The missing pieces are finally revealed in The Wild Truth, written by Carine McCandless, Chris's beloved and trusted sister.  Featured in both the book and film, Carine has wrestled for more than twenty years with the legacy of her brother's journey to self-discovery, and now tells her own story while filling in the blanks of his. Carine was Chris's best friend, the person with whom he had the closest bond, and who witnessed firsthand the dysfunctional and violent family dynamic that made Chris willing to embrace the harsh wilderness of Alaska. Growing up in the same troubled household, Carine speaks candidly about the deeper reality of life in the McCandless family. In the many years since the tragedy of Chris's death, Carine has searched for some kind of redemption. In this touching and deeply personal memoir, she reveals how she has learned that real redemption can only come from speaking the truth.

Review
“One of the driving points of The Wild Truth is that [McCandless’s] famous, ultimately fatal journey of adventure and discovery was motivated in large part by a desire to escape his parents…Carine’s new book fleshes out the causes of Chris’s actions with much more detail and impact.” (Outsideonline.com)

“A moving and revelatory saga.” (Boston Globe)

“The Wild Truth is a moving narrative of domestic abuse, grief and survival, and for the perspective and revelations it contains, an essential additon to the Into the Wild story.” (Newsweek)

“Fiercely honest and gripping. . . . She honestly shares her successes and failures in work and relationships as she comes to the realization that she has tried to find in adult life what was lacking in her childhood: worth, strength, and unconditional love.” (Publishers Weekly)

“The Wild Truth is an important book on two fronts: It sets the record straight about a story that has touched thousands of readers, and it opens up a conversation about hideous domestic violence hidden behind a mask of prosperity and propriety.” (NPR.org)

“Helping her readers become more familiar with the overwhelming burdens caused by dysfunctional parents is one of The Wild Truth’s major achievements. [McCandless] touches each of us…[we] have a better sense of what drove her brother and compelled her to write about her own harrowing history.” (Anchorage Press)

“Powerful . . . gripping to read.” (Examiner.com)

“A powerful book…For me, reading it was like finding a crucial missing word in the middle of a crossword puzzle: once those letters were filled in, the answers to the blank spaces around them also cascaded into place.” (Eva Holland, Vela Magazine)

From the Back Cover

In April 1992, a young man named Chris McCandless walked into the Alaskan wilderness, where he survived for more than 100 days before perishing in an abandoned bus. For over twenty years his story has captivated millions, and yet only one person knew the truth behind his remarkable journey—until now.

Through a tumultuous childhood, the McCandless siblings clung to each other amidst a chaotic home life, forming a lifelong bond and an unbreakable trust. So when Chris abandoned nearly all of his possessions, cut off all family ties, and forged an anonymous existence on the road, Carine understood what drew Chris away from all he had known. Having to face her own truth and surmount some crushing obstacles in the absence of her beloved brother, Carine drew strength from his constant presence while forging ahead on her own unique journey.

A powerful and deeply personal story, The Wild Truth is both a revelatory glimpse into the life of Chris McCandless and the inspirational tale of one woman's resilience in the wake of unspeakable tragedy.

Interesting insight from the front lines
By M. Michaels
Although the writing is clunky and at times overwrought, the central purpose of this book is the much-needed insight into the incredibly damaging environment in which the 2 youngest McCandless kids were raised. I think the abusive environment made it very easy for Chris to cut off all contact in an attempt to define himself as a man separate from Walt. He did the extraordinary (abandoning his formerly materially-comfortable life for a meagre existence) because he was from an extra-ordinary situation. The very foundation of the second McCandless family was built on a lie, and that which is a lie cannot stand, it may take a few decades but it will fall. The core of the second family, which was Chris and Carine, seem more damaged than the first family (the other 6 kids) probably because of the persistently detrimental effects of living full time with two incredibly personality-disordered people. We don’t get much insight into the other mother, but it seems the very act of separating from Walt and claiming her own life and dignity back made a huge difference on the older kids. They all seem to be successful and ‘normal’ in a way that Chris and Carine are not. Perhaps their mother was not as nuts. Walt and Billie were so wrapped up in themselves and their dynamic drama that real parenting seemed to take a back seat. What little energy was left after trying to kill each other or the kids was spent on their careers and ‘looking good’ to the community. They are almost textbook narcissists.
Carine is not the easiest person to like; there are shades of her mother’s willfulness and self-righteousness in her actions, and she can seem more self-absorbed than self-reflective. Because she and Chris lost contact just at the point his story gets interesting, she can offer little insight into the man he was becoming, she can only reveal the boy he was.

Don't read if you think it's inappropriate for a grieving sibling to talk about her own life too.
By Amazon Customer
I almost never write reviews about books, but I do want to make one thing clear:

Anyone leaving a poor review based on the fact that Carine talks about herself, and/or that there was nothing 'earth-shattering' about what was written with regard to Chris and his motivations completely missed the plethora of nuance and sub-text, all of the things that weren't explicitly written but many people were capable of picking up on, probably hasn't experienced the content that this book engages with. Furthermore, this becomes even more obvious when people are still unable to grasp why a child who endured the violence of abuse would choose to leave home and behave in a way that's 'reckless,' saying that 'nothing was actually revealed' essentially translates into 'I don't think the abuse these children endured is significant, especially not enough to cause someone to do what Chris did.'

For those who read this entire book, learned about the horrendous abuse that these two experienced as children, the petty and conniving harassment and manipulation that Carine endured from her parents for years, the painful grief that Carine felt after losing her brother and then seeing his name and image ridiculed and criticized by every average joe who thought that their input should be heard, and still came away feeling as though they didn't gain any insight into what drove Chris into the wild will simply never get it.

Unfortunately, this book seems only to prove insightful to those that are either capable of understanding the magnitude of the toll that abuse takes on a person, reading between the lines and grasping what's not being overtly said, or those who didn't find Chris a deplorable person in the first place...I honestly can't imagine why somebody who freely takes every opportunity they have to prattle on about what a terrible person they think Chris was would choose to read this book AND then still feel compelled to leave a review.

A Very Sad Story
By Angel La Canfora
I have mixed feelings about The Wild Truth. It starts off with a bang. Right away, she's at her childhood home and declares, "I f$&#* hate this house." And I thought, "OK, we're in for some raw, unbridled honesty here." But that kind of forthright bluntness becomes muted as she takes on a more formal tone, in an attempt to write "literary."

Carine has my sympathy. Her life hasn't been easy and to live with constant reminder's of her brother's legacy and tragic end has got to be painful. But I wished the book would've kept its focus on Chris. This book is really about Carine's journey, her relationship with her parents, Chris, her siblings and her ex-lovers. She spends a great deal of time uncomfortably justifying and defending her own life and legacy, as she continually pats herself on the back or holds herself up as a pillar for us all to emulate. She just skirts the edges of sanctimony, never quite going over the edge. The writing is clunky, phrases such as "email missives" when just "email" would've worked are peppered throughout the book. I found myself skimming whole passages where she went into great detail about something like her daughter playing with, uh, a ribbon, I think, I don't know, I checked out at that part.

What really redeemed the book, for me, was strictly personal. There were scenes and recountings of conversations with Walt and Billie that were note-for-note perfect for ones I experienced with my own family that made me gasp. Plus, I've been fascinated by Chris' story for years, as I've felt he's a kindred spirit. I, too, have wandered around in nature, alone, searching, drinking in the peace.

I think this book will be interesting to anyone who has survived an abusive childhood or to those who are Christopher McCandless completists. Don't expect to be spellbound or to be absorbed in a book of great literary merit. Don't expect to learn too much about Chris' story, either. Take it for what it is: A very sad story told by a woman who has survived hardship and who seems to still be coming to terms with it all.

The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord, by T. D. Jakes

In his million-copy bestseller, Woman, Thou Art Loosed!, Bishop T. D. Jakes showed women how to heal the wounds of the past and to forge forward into their futures. Now, he has written his most urgent book yet, a progressive next step and the book millions of women have been waiting for. In this stirring call to healing and empowerment, Jakes shows us how society demands girls and women to be perfect, to be sweet, to be sexy, to be submissive, to be pristine, to be anything and everything but the one thing God wants them to be--real. He argues that females are often subjected to verbal, physical, and emotional abuse, which they then carry around in their minds and their hearts, causing them to feel like they have no place to go and no worth of their own. But Bishop Jakes has a message of Good News and hope for these women. He tells them that God has a plan for each of them, that each is holy in the arms of her Lord. His book delves deeply into the three most important relationships in a woman's life: with

herself, with her man, and with God. Jakes gives clear direction that enables and empowers women to be restored in all of their relationships without any residual side effects from the past. He redirects the expectations characteristic of failed relationships by discussing the many things women often desire from their mate that can only be fulfilled by God. This book is written for women who desire to reach their goals, maximize their God-given potential, and still have someone with whom to share them. Accessible, sensitive, practical, inspirational--the amazing T. D. Jakes has written a book that women have been praying for, with a powerful

message of hope and transformation.

Amazon.com Review
T.D. Jakes's insights and expressions are balm for every woman's soul. As he explains so compassionately, we have lost sight of "the lady," and it is a loss that continues to buffet women and misdirect men. Jakes eschews condemnation and exposes the lies that have cloaked women in sorrow, helping women to stand in the beauty, strength, and confidence God intended.

Bishop Jakes, church founder, pastor, and author of numerous books, including the bestselling Woman, Thou Art Loosed!, structures this book in three parts. In the first, he gently takes the hand of every woman who has been ill-used, crippled in the innermost being, and shows her what is truly beautiful about the feminine. In part two, he opens the door for communication between husband and wife, lover and friend. Part three brings alive the passion of the Lord for women, this most exquisite of His creations.

Much has been lost. Weep with Bishop Jakes over the pain to which women have succumbed. But loss is not forever. In fact, any woman reading this book will likely feel something emerge within her, something long forgotten but something that rings of truth. --Ann Weinheimer

From Publishers Weekly
A popular Christian preacher, Jakes has produced many books (e.g., Woman, Thou Art Loosed!), videos and audio tapes that are gaining ever-increasing mainstream attention. Here, he demonstrates an unusual ability to inspire, uplift, teach and comfort. An eloquent wordsmith, this African-American minister writes with an abundance of memorable metaphors and yet speaks to women's hearts in practical, often humorous terms, about "three relationships that must be balanced in order to achieve some semblance of fulfillment"?with their husbands, God and themselves. Rather than suggesting that women be selfless and restricted to hearth and home, Jakes directs them toward healthy self-love, success and creative expression, to become and be treated as "women of excellence." Jakes maintains an intimate bond with readers to the last page, through deeply personal stories: his helplessness in the face of his wife's grief over the death of her mother; the joy and hope he feels at the sound of his little girl's footsteps; the memory of his own mother, "a gentle woman with the strength to build a home and the power to create a family." Despite his book's romance-novel title and strong Christian slant, this masterful preacher offers all women sound advice and gentle, respectful encouragement. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Jakes is a pastor who hosts a weekly television program that airs in the United States, Europe, and South Africa. He speaks a powerful message to women who have lost faith in themselves and seek salvation primarily in their relationships with men. To enjoy healthy relationships, women must first know themselves and value their own gifts and strengths, which they can do by putting God before all other relationships, according to Jake. The contemporary woman has learned to juggle so many roles that she has, of necessity, become a fierce survivor who is too busy to nurture herself. The woman who has suffered abuse or neglect can also learn to love herself with God's healing so that she can break free of the cycle that keeps her in destructive relationships. Jakes explores the vulnerability and expectations of men, pointing out ways men and women can appreciate each other's strengths by understanding their differences. Although Jakes makes a generous allowance, perhaps short of justification, for marital infidelity on the part of men, his intention is to encourage Christian women in general.

Bishop Jakes- Lady, Lover & Lord
By valencia
This book came clean and I couldn't ask for more with the price I paid. I love being able to get my books this way. I love Bishop Jakes and he teaches you how to love yourself and how important it is to know yourself. When you know yourself you know what you want out of someone else instead of making one mistake after another in a relationship. Happiness comes from within and a mate is basically a gift. Someone that should have the same goals and vision you have. Knowing God and making him the center of your life and being obedient to his word and loving him through all things no matter if a storm is blazing or it's just a hard day... when your praises go up the blessings come done. Being a lady of the Lord puts a glow around you and favor in your life!!! Love what I'm reading!!! Love ya Amazon!!

Another awesome book by the Bishop!
By Laketha Hicks
Once again Bishop Jakes gives excellent advice. I always feel as if he is talking directly to me when I read one of his works. As a woman who grew up without a father this book gave me not only insight on how to find a relationship with myself and God, but it taught me how men think and how to have a successful relationship. I have already shared this book with a friend of mine.

Changed My Life
By Ashleigh
I bought this book and the album at the same time. I was always a fan of the album but the book enhanced what every song meant. I will try to express what I got from this book without writing an entire paragraph. Soo...long story short, this book helped me understand myself more, God's intentions for our relationship, and how I should be as a wife. This book also helped me understand that I should have a relationship with God before I get my husband. I have passed this on to my friend and she became a totally different person.T.D. Jakes is such an eloquent and colorful writer that is gifted to bring realness and compassion to readers.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
