Teens who loved Ann Brashares's The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2001) will cheer its equally riveting sequel The Second Summer of the Sisterhood. As in the first novel, four teen girls who have known each other since birth (their moms shared a pregnancy aerobics class) further forge their bond of friendship through a pair of thrift-store jeans that magically, impossibly, fits them all perfectly.
Like the summer before, Carmen, Bridget, Tibby, and Lena share their individual adventures with the Pants collective, creating an engaging, kaleidoscopic narrative of four voices. This summer, Tibby attends a film program in Virginia and Bridget (Bee), whose mother has died, impulsively jets off to Alabama to get reacquainted with her estranged grandmother. Lovely Lena tries to protect herself from the heartbreak of loving her long-distance Greek god boyfriend Kostos, and Carmen deals (poorly) with her mother dating again and having the nerve to borrow the Pants!
The Second Summer, while breezy and fun to read, deals seriously with love lost and found, death, and finding the courage to live honestly. The teens' lessons are often painful, but the Sisterhood prevails. Quotations from luminaries such as Charlie Brown ("Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love") to Nelson Mandela ("There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered") open each chapter and cleverly reflect the novel's many moods. Grade 8 Up-Carmen, Lena, Tibby, and Bee are back in this long, engaging sequel to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Delacorte, 2001). The four best friends are beginning their 16th summer with new expectations for personal growth, romance, and deepening friendship, all enhanced by the magic of a shared pair of thrift-store jeans. Brashares has deftly interwoven the story's strands to convey the relaxed intimacy of the girls' friendships as well as the many parallels in their individual experiences. The dialogue is natural and helps build nuances of character; the use of metaphor and insightful language renders a narrative that is highly readable and marked by emotional truth. Bee, whose mother died when she was 11, heads to Alabama under an assumed name to visit her estranged maternal grandmother. Carmen and Lena both become entangled in emotional spats with their mothers, and Tibby makes an edgy documentary film about her mother for a screenwriting course. This is a summer for coming-of-age, and for people materializing out of the blue, but making an impact-Tibby's old friend Brian appears unbidden at her dorm; Lena's Greek boyfriend, Kostos, arrives suddenly; and Carmen's stepsister comes seeking sanctuary. Meanwhile, the traveling pants are circulated among the friends. It may just be the power of wonder, but the jeans undoubtedly play a role in the happy resolution of this big-hearted, complex tale of living, learning, and caring. The pants travel with Bridget to Alabama, where she reestablishes a bond with her maternal grandmother; then they go with Tibby to a special summer program at Williamston College. The pants are with Lena at home during her on-again, off-again relationship with Kostos, and they are with Carmen as she tries to navigate her own and her mother's love lives. But this year the pants preside over a sadder, more tumultuous summer, as all four girls mature and realize that love and family are far more difficult to sustain than they had thought. Brashares has done an outstanding job of showing the four teens growing up and giving readers a happy, ultimately hopeful book, easy to read and gentle in its important lessons. Readers will want at least one more summer of the sisterhood of the traveling pants. Frances Bradburn

I really wanted to enjoy this book

Ok, I really wanted to enjoy this book, but I didn't really. First of all, ( book lovers can get mad at me) I saw the movie before I read the book. The movie was really moving and I really enjoyed it. However, I thought the book would have more plot and depth within each characters' story. Unfortunately, each character only had one real struggle throughout the book- except Tibby at the very end. For example, I feel like Lena's story could be summed up in like one sentence because there was not much depth to it. I personally enjoyed Carmen's story the best because I think it was the one that was constantly moving and evolving, unlike the others. It was more real than any of the other stories in my opinion. Bailey was one of my favorite characters and I was sad when she passed, but I didn't cry. I didn't feel like I knew her that well. It felt like the summer was over in 20 pages. Frankly, I didn't enjoy it as much as the movie. Also, the writing was very fundamental. Ann was writing a story for young teenagers and it sounded as if she was writing to sis year olds. I personally disliked her writing style because it was boring and not unique in any way and for a story rather bland, the writing has to be interesting in order for it to get a good rating in my opinion. If you like a light read, than this is the book for you. But I felt it was too light of a book for a coming if age novel which usually handles some more serious themes.

a truly MAGICAL book

Tibby works at Wallman’s drug store. Lena goes to Greece with her grandmother. Bridget attends a soccer camp in Baja, California. Carmen flies to South Carolina for some quality time with her dad. These four best friends have to spend their first summer apart, but keep in touch through heart-felt letters and a magic pair of jeans. This book’s emphasis on strong, supportive girl friendships inspires readers. Ann Brashares cleverly tells the stories of the trying teenage years. Each girl learns something new about herself and her friends in this amazing novel.
There are some very valuable lessons to be learned from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It shows that friendship endures all, and different personalities can deepen bonds. Brashares explains that happiness “isn't having everything in your life be perfect… it's about stringing together all the little things” (Brashares). Being a teenage girl myself, I found it easy to connect and relate to each of the characters. Every girl can find a little bit of herself in the sisterhood. Not only are the characters well-developed, and human, Brashares doesn't give them more wisdom than any other fifteen-year-olds would have. The characters live their lives as real teenagers, and delve into human emotions that all women have experienced at some point.
I really enjoyed the point of view of this book. While in the beginning it was sometimes hard to follow, it was very interesting. It was third person point of view, but jumped between each of the girls’ personal experiences. The author also throws in the notes that each girl mails throughout the course of the summer, giving insight on their thoughts and feelings. I would definitely recommend this book to friends and family; it’s truly a great read.

'This sequel to the fictional story “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” again tells the story of the four best friends from D.C. This summer the girls all think they will be staying home besides Tibby who will be going to a film program at a college. Although, Bridget does decide to go and visit her grandmother, who she has not seen or heard from in years. This leaves Carmen and Lena home for the summer. Carmen goes through a lot this summer involving her mother, Lena has a pretty tough summer as well, and she reunites with an old friend from Greece but then is forced to go back to Greece near the end of the summer because of a tragedy in her family. A lot has changed since last summer, and the girls are experiencing new difficulties but they are still close friends. Although they all have their different experiences this summer, the pants are still sent around to each of the best friends. They all go through a lot again this summer, but once again they never lose sight of their friendship and love for each other.
'“The Second Summer of the Sisterhood” is another great story for all ages from Ann Brashares. It is a great book for teenage girls, mostly because what the girls in the book go through is what teens are going through now; heartbreak, loss, friendship, and so much more. As teens grow and begin to understand that life is harder and more complex than they ever thought, it is easier to get through these awkward and tough times knowing that other people are going through the same things they are. This book is a great support system if someone needs reassurance that what they are going through is normal. Many people say the second book of a series is never as good as the first, I believe that this is false for this series. The books do not have a lot in common, they play off of each other very well. It really does help show how the girls are growing and how they are maturing, because their stories are getting to be more problematic. At the end of the summer the girls are reunited, they talked about their summers and all that happened. “Carmen let out her breath when she saw the three mothers sitting at the round table” This is showing how close the mothers have become again, for the first time after Bridget’s mothers death they all came together to talk and have a good time. The girls were all so happy to see this because I believe it gave them hope for their futures. “The Second Summer of the Sisterhood” is a great book to help girls of all ages remember what is important, friendship and staying close to the people who are loving and caring.
