If your class requires this book, get another book to make things clear
By Sam
I've used one textbook that was worse than this, but the author of that textbook spoke english as a second language and hadn't had his book properly edited. The author's of this book don't have those handicaps. One of the most basic features that I look for in a textbook is a glossary. This book has no glossary. This wouldn't be a huge deal if the words that were keywords for a chapter were defined when they are introduced, but frequently they aren't. For example, metalinguistics is introduced on page 201, syntagmatic-pardimatic shift on page 246, and discriminative stimulus on page 35 these terms never defined (thankfully, wikipedia does have good definitions). And of the terms that are defined, they are poorly defined - for example: emergentism, fast mapping, registers.

The writing is scattered, idiosyncratic and meandering. I'm sure that the first version of this text was coherent in it's exposition of language development, but this text is not. If you've asked a student to revise a paper and add more sources to a paper, you'll be familiar with the disjointed style presented in this book. It seems as if the author(s), in an attempt to get the next edition out, just added the current research and threw in a few sentences here and there to attempt to explain it.

The pedagogical features are minimal. There are words that are bolded and "discussion" questions at the end of each chapter. Without a glossary, the bolded words are not helpful and the discussion questions are frequently not even addressed by the text itself. This text has no website, no study guide and no way to find errata.

If you are a student that must use this textbook, order another textbook in addition to this one. It really doesn't matter which one, because they are all better than this one. If you are a teacher, that must use this textbook - apologize to your students.

OK
By Kevin J Acker
This text was fine for the class I took, but I didn't love how it was organized. It made it hard to understand, and I ended up having to write everything down in a manner that was more organized so I could piece it together and make sense of it. But it was interesting!
