Great Book for What it Claims
By GPL
I bought this book with the intent to learn how to work with Files and a data base on an Android phone and this book answered my questions. I had purchased and read through similar books that glossed over the two aforementioned topics; giving some basic information, but no real world examples and or how to. This book gives great examples and and a very easily learned how to. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in developing mobile apps for Android, iOS or BlackBerry.

Excellent Book
By James A. Brannan
My annoyances with Adobe Flex on Mobile Devices aside (it just doesn't seem to work quite as well as Adobe claims IMHO), this is a good book that gathers much of the mobile development experience from the web. It's easy to read, follow, and is a good reference. You have to know some Flex and Actionscript. But I've found the book useful. He covers pretty much all you need to know to start developing Flex apps quickly.

Not for beginners
By Host Milo Corporation
I was rather disappointed in this book, which is poorly organized and in adequately indexed. it is a somewhat useful introduction into building apps with Flash Maker 4.5, but will be almost impossible for one to follow without already having a firm grasp of Action Script programming.

The writing style is dull to the point of being barely readable. Do not waste your time or money on this. I am hopeful that a good book or two on this subject will come out in the near future, but this is not it.

Moby-Duck: The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea & of the Beachcombers, Oceanograp hers, Environmentalists & Fools Including the A

A compulsively readable narrative of whimsy and curiosity- "adventurous, inquisitive, and brightly illuminating" (Janet Maslin, The New York Times).

When the writer Donovan Hohn heard of the mysterious loss of thousands of bath toys at sea, he figured he would interview a few oceanographers, talk to a few beachcombers, and read up on Arctic science and geography. But questions can be like ocean currents: wade in too far, and they carry you away. Hohn's accidental odyssey pulls him into the secretive arena of shipping conglomerates, the daring work of Arctic researchers, the lunatic risks of maverick sailors, and the shadowy world of Chinese toy factories. Moby-Duck is a journey into the heart of the sea and an adventure through science, myth, the global economy, and some of the worst weather imaginable.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Whimsical curiosity begets a quixotic odyssey and troubling revelations about plastics polluting the seas in former high school teacher and journalist Hohn's charming account of what he learned searching for 28,800 rubber bath toys lost at sea in 1992. His curiosity, prompted by a student's quirky essay, begins in 2005 around Sitka, Alaska, where yellow "duckies," frogs, turtles, and beavers washed up after three-story waves buffeted a container ship traveling from China to America. Hohn, a senior editor at Harper's magazine, eventually tracks more rogue ducks bobbing up from isolated Gore Point, Alaska, to Maine beaches. The author's quest leads him to a research vessel trawling for degraded plastic in Hawaiian seas, to the Chinese factory where the toys were manufactured, aboard a container vessel traversing the same route as the original ship (a particularly hair-raising section), and finally to the high Arctic to study the science of oceanic drift. Packed with seafaring lore and astute reporting, this enthralling narrative is the Moby Dick of drifting ducks. (Mar.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Like Bill Bryson on hard science, or John McPhee with attitude, journalist Hohn travels from beaches to factories to the northern seas in pursuit of a treasure that mystifies as much as it provokes. His quest is to determine what happened to a load of 28,800 Chinese manufactured plastic animals in a container that fell off a ship en route to Seattle in 1992. Hohn’s inquiry leads him to 10 Little Rubber Ducks (2005), children’s author Eric Carle’s idealized board-book version, and also to the plastic-strewn beaches of an Alaskan island, a Hong Kong toy fair, and the Sesame Street origins of the rubber duck’s popularity. By turns thoughtful, bemused, or shocked, Hohn finds the story growing beyond his wildest visions as he learns about the science of ocean currents and drift and the lure of cheap plastic in a consumer culture that has dangerously lost its way. The resulting book is a thoroughly engaging environmental/travel title that crosses partisan divides with its solid research and apolitical nature. Rubber ducks as harmless, ubiquitous symbols of childhood? Not anymore, not by a long shot. This dazzles from start to finish. --Colleen Mondor

If you like Rubber Ducks, or even just the ocean, a must read.
By Paul Morrison
After finishing Moby-Duck by Donovan Hohn I give it 5 Rubber Ducks. Perfect stocking stuffer for the Good Morning Gloucester Friends of Rubber Duck (GMGFORD). A spellbinding journey that leapfrogs (see green frogs below) across the world searching for the illusive Rubber Duck. The Gloucester Bookstore and Toad Hall in Rockport have been told to stock this book.

First the technicalities: On the night of January 10, 1992, an enormous container ship from China, crossing the north Pacific, ran into a storm and eventually lost several tractor trailer sized containers to the sea. This actually happens quite often and some people get their kicks hunting down Adidas sneakers, or the ten thousand catcher’s mitts or hockey sticks that bob to the surface after the ocean pops the container open. But on this Friday night the cargo was 7,200 cartons of bath toys containing a green frog, a blue turtle, a red beaver, and, wait for it, a rubber duck (This makes 28,800 floating bath toys.). But forget those other toys, we focus on the 7,200 Rubber Ducks. These Rubber Ducks are just like the GMG Rubber Duck. Born in a blow mold in China. Our Rubber Duck made the trip safely much earlier. Her container ship pulled into Seattle in 1984, was offloaded to a truck destined for Shelcore Inc in Somerset, New Jersey. It then was sent to a novelty shop on Cape Ann where David Platt of Rockport purchased it to decorate the bathroom. For fifteen years Rubber Duck left a sheltered life before she met Homie the Seagull down on Granite Pier and we all know where that part of the story has ended up …

But back to the roaming 7,200 rubber ducks. Donovan Hohn read an article about them and the search for information took over his life from 2005 to 2008. One month he would be pulling a red beaver off the beach of an Alaskan Island, the next month he would be on an ice breaker travelling the northwest passage above Canada. Along the way Donovan learns a lot about ocean currents, maritime regulations, the weather, the climate, the sailor Ishmael of Moby Dick fame, as well as how to be a father.

He meets a lot of people, most of whom think he is a bit daft, “Has thou seen the White Whale?” “Has thou seen the Rubber Duck?” A page turner to the end, you will find yourself a bit more knowledgable about the ocean after having read it. Do you know about the great gyre, the garbage patch, swirling in the Pacific to the North of Hawaii? I thought I did but was surprised that the real floating dead zone of plastic is much different than what is reported. Hohn brings no agenda to his search for the Rubber Duck. He started with a simple question, did a Rubber Duck really go through the Bering Strait, up over the Northwest passage, and land on a beach in England? In the end, it isn’t the answer, but the journey that matters, and we all learn a lot by tagging along.

An Educational Account
By Sheila Shortell
I am reading Moby-Duck, by Donovan Hohn. I find it quite interesting and informative, especially on the topics of ecology and ocean currents. When I started making notes of pages that had bits of information and quotes I wanted to reference later, I did not expect the large volume of references I would find. About half the pages have something. One quote I especially like is, "Why do we like to walk on the beach?...all the cells inside our bodies realize they're close to their mom." This is from Curtis Ebbesmeyer, retired oceanographer, in Seattle, Washington.

As an amateur beachcomber (I do it because I love it,) I was fascinated with Moby-Duck because there were explanations of the movement of flotsam and jetsam on the ocean waves and currents. I have never read any other account that explained how and why things drift to their landing places. In Moby-Duck I found there even is a publication about beachcombing--Beachcombers' Alert! published by Curtis Ebbesmeyer.

Book review readers will likely know by now that the theme of Moby-Duck is an account of part of a shipment of plastic bath toys broken loose from their bindings and catapulted into the Pacific Ocean during a dramatic storm, January 10, 1992. They were in huge containers, 8 feet wide by 20 or 40 feet long. At least one container burst in the crash, the rubber toys spilled into the sea. The story tracks the routes of winds and ocean currents that move water and materials around in the oceans.

Along with the bath toys, I read about shipments on other ships that break loose and crash into the deep--shoes, sneakers and sandals, computer monitors, things that float. "Ghost nets" were disturbing. They are high-seas drift nets, 15 miles long! Broken loose from fishermen, these nylon nets roll up into a huge ball, tangling animals, catching on coral reefs, killing anything in their paths.

I learned about chemicals that break down from lost or discarded items floating in sea water, and what they can do to plants and sea creatures. I was disturbed to find that beach clean-up operations get grants from polluters like BP, Chevron, or Dow Chemical. These grants give a positive twist to the corporate reputations while nothing is done to stop the pollution they cause.

Oddly enough, half way through the book, the bath toys were taken off the market, after they were found to have a high level of lead. On investigation, Hohn found that it is up to the manufacturers to make sure a toy is safe, the government agents find out about the problems later. The vast majority of toys found in US stores are made in China, in sweat shops. Shouldn't we have some suspicion about the quality of what we get from such sources?

I have not finished reading the book yet. I'll keep reading it. It is like no other I have found. I don't expect a solution to the problem of pollution of the oceans, but an education is helpful.

froggies and beavers and ducks, oh my!
By Jersey Girl
When I first heard about this book I immediately downloaded it onto my Kindle. Who could resist the story of 28,000 polyethylene bath toys falling into the drink from the three-story height of a cargo ship during an Arctic storm in 1992? I needed to read the book in smallish doses and an ebook wasn't the best way to do it. I wanted to go back, forward, re-read passages without getting lost, slosh around in the story the way the ducks (who weren't made of rubber) floated around the various oceans of the world. I wanted to underline in pencil, carry it around until the pages were salt and cappuccino-stained. The way I imagine my book would look if I were really with Donovan Hohn on the beaches of Alaska, Hawaii, or in a boat on the North Pacific. I'd even enjoy his company in the Arctic. But paper, ebook, or oral tale, the story compels.

Hohn became obsessed with tracing the sea-going course of the lost toys. Specifically, rubber duck icons of ageless nostalgia. The beginning of his journeying couldn't have come at a more inconvenient time, as he and his wife were soon expecting their first child. But the pull to untangle the mystery surrounding the spill and the occasional appearance of a toy thousands of miles and years away, were too strong to ignore. Most people dream of secret adventure, but how many of us actually manifest it? He did. And along the way got involved with a cast of diverse characters and facts. He wrote: "I was improvising, surrendering to happenstance, riding the drift, and with every passing day the drift was leading me into wilder waters". In his hands, the quest becomes universal and accessible to us.

I looked forward to personal narrative as a diversion from the information-packed story. I'm not a scientific type and there were times when my mind wandered and I skipped ahead. It was as if the facts sometimes got caught in eddies of thick seaweed. I longed to rake it away and release them, but Hohn is a wise writer and did it without my help. And the information was still there if I wanted it.

In spite of adventure, back breaking work (literally in Hohn's case), references to Moby Dick, and clear details, what hovers like a silently gathering tsunami is the treachery of tons of zombie-plastic in the waters of our planet. What remains in my mind, besides the eternally mythical bobbing ducks, are images of baby seabirds ingesting what will kill them, pristine beaches become garbage dumps, remote seas swirling with the world's disposables. This book is a good read and may become the wake-up call we need.

Trans*Am: Cis Men and Trans Women in Love, by Joseph McClellan

Trans women—assigned male at birth and later transitioned into a female gender— are recently in media because of celebrities and controversial legislation. Therefore cis men—who identify with a masculine gender they were assigned at birth—are now called upon to share their experiences as lovers of trans women. Using theory and personal anecdotes, the author questions the codes that cis men and trans women use to interpret their own and others' gendered and sexed bodies.

Joseph McClellan , Assistant Professor, Department of Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, Asian University for Women, Chittagong, Bangladesh, has taught philosophy, Buddhism, and gender studies, and translated and introduced contemporary French philosopher Michel Onfray's A Hedonist Manifesto: The Power to Exist.

Review
"As a trans woman who has dated almost exclusively cis straight identified men I have been frustrated with how their desire for trans women has existed largely in the shadows, deeply stigmatized. I have longed to see more men who are attracted to, date, have sex with and/or are in relationships with trans women to come forward and speak the truth of those attractions, encounters, experiences and relationships. Joe McClellan in Trans*Am does just that and much more. He shares his lived experiences as a transam as part of a rigorous philosophical take down of essentialist notions of gender and sexuality and how we assign meaning."—Laverne Cox, actress co-starring in Orange Is The New Black

“Trans*Am offers a fresh look at worlds of love, attraction, and bodies; challenges socially accepted notions of what is ‘right’; and seeks to free unconventional genders and sexuality from destructive stigmas. The author courageously and critically contributes to a long-overdue conversation taking to task the social constructs that have proven too painful to too many for too long.”—Trace Lysette, actress co-starring in Transparent

"An important contribution to an important debate."—Jonathan Kemp, author of The Penetrated Male

"I've always felt that I needed to "identify" with a particular sexual orientation. But McClellan's book explains why this isn't necessary by drawing on Buddhist philosophy. He even shows that the tendency to "identify" can get in the way of enjoying sex. Other animals enjoy it just fine without words, and so should I."—Michael Osofsky

About the Author
Joseph McClellan, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor, Department of Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, Asian University for Women, Chittagong, Bangladesh, He has previously taught Western and Asian philosophies, as well as Gender Studies, at a number of U.S. colleges and universities. While drawing on his background in these fields, his book Transam is deeply personal. Trans women have played a major role in McClellan's adult life as friends and lovers. After years of intimate discussions with friends and lovers about the unique issues confronting trans women and their partners, he was frustrated by the muddled state of the discourse and convinced that philosophy could contribute to its clarification. He believes that if the complexities of contemporary sex, gender, and sexuality are unpacked through philosophical reflection and discussion, trans people will suffer less as victims of society’s misunderstanding and its ensuing wrong-headed legislation and institutional hostility. Columbia University Press published McClellan's translation of contemporary French philosopher Michel Onfray’s book A Hedonist Manifesto: The Power to Exist, and he has published translations from Tibetan.

Read this book.
By Jeremy
This is an excellent book and well worth the read, not just for those interested in transgender issues, but for anyone brave enough to question the underpinnings of some of our most basic suppositions on human relationships. While this topic itself is obviously not new, far too little has been written about it. As McCllelan notes, the cisgendered hetero men who are the lovers, friends, or family of trans females are often silent in the discourse, even as their loved ones face heinous discrimination and persecution. Some, including mainstream media, have noted that we are at a "Transgender Tipping Point", which I am hopeful will ultimately lead to a more fair and open world for trans people. However, the reality is that this remains a distant goal. A large section of society (including many who consider themselves progressive) feels comfortable overtly discriminating against trans people or regarding them as a comedic novelty, even if they would view such behavior as embarrassing or unacceptable when directed at other groups. Honest and sympathetic contributions to the public discussion such as Mr. McClellan's are timely and should be welcomed. Importantly, they will both let the trans community know that they have some support and will also provide other straight, transamorous men an example of how to approach the conflicted feelings they may face in a manner that is compassionate, yet unabashed and true to one's self. And while this all sounds heavy, Trans Am is also very entertaining and well written book. Do yourself a favor and read it.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Trans*Am. McClellan not only shares his real life experiences being a transamorous Cis man, he also uses theory and philosophy to question gender and sexuality conventionalisms. McClellan's voice in this conversation is important and powerful.

I just finished this book. It is helpful to read it with a smartphone handy so you can look up words, as you will likely recieve a thorough schooling in a vast realm of English (and Tibetan) words you didn't even know you knew . However, this is not all you will learn. Also within this book you will find thorough philosophical discourse on non essentialism along with perhaps one of the best synopses of the core of the Buddhist teachings I have ever encountered. In fact, you could read this book solely for that instruction. However, the central pillar of the book consists of the author's brave elucidation of "transamory" thereby tearing down the world of interpretations of how sex should be and what it should look like . If at times this book feels a little bit too academic for you, hang in there. The last chapter is an especially sublimely raw and personal account of one human sexuality, something that is just as unique and just as beautiful as each and every one of us is. This book is a brave reminder to see that beauty in ourselves and each and every human being we encounter no matter how we or they appear.

Here are a list of some of my favorite quotes from the book:

"the people who appear to us are not to be interpreted but seen with bright eyed wonder, reverence, and awe."

“Cis, white, hetero, males, after all, have historically shown a pathological need to dominate every discourse.”

“Woman—that puzzling word that three-plus waves of feminist theory and genomic science have not been able to put their finger on.”

"The paths of our various experiences, the ones we feel when no one is looking, not even ourselves, those paths that are our very ground, get muddied and dusty when they intersect with the gigantic, anonymous thoroughfares of meaning. We spin and can’t find our way; our trails are swallowed into the uniformity of the canonical veneer slathered on the world."

"But the body is the site where history carves its memory."

"We cannot possibly avoid treating others as objects so long as we refer to our own selves, or anything, as essential."

"We have all been to the same general school of our civilization. If our anxieties and others’ intolerances are not natural but learned, they can be unlearned."

"Metaphysical is not the opposite of physical."

"The search for two real human sexes—Male and Female—has been misguided."

INITIAL INQUIRY
Addressing Client Belief Systems
Before entering into the details of hypnosis methodology connected
to the practice of spiritual regression, I think it is fitting
to consider your approach to questions about the afterlife. As a
spiritual regressionist, you will have clients who are in a personal
quandary about their beliefs at the time of their first contact with
you. How you respond to their respective concerns might well be
the determining factor in their making an appointment.
While a large majority of the people who wish you to help them
access their soul memories are comfortable with their beliefs, others
are conflicted by religious teachings, concerns over the mechanics of
hypnosis in reaching their life between lives, or they may have some
skepticism about trusting themselves to you in facilitating their
mental entry into the spirit world.
I begin my sessions by explaining to the unsettled potential client
that it will benefit them to enter their hypnosis regression with an
open mind. I might even tell them that regardless of their belief system,
their unconscious memories are probably going to reveal a
home in the spirit world that will be consistent with the reports
from everyone who has undergone spiritual regression. A skeptic
could argue that this sort of reassurance is actually preconditioning
the subject. Even so, after conducting thousands of life between
lives hypnosis sessions, I am comfortable with making this statement
to an anxious client.
When considering bias, there is also the fact that my books about
the afterlife are already public knowledge. If a potential client raises
the possibility of being swayed by having read these books, I
explain that during the many years before my research was published
I told most clients very little in advance. Either way, you will
find it makes no difference. Once a subject mentally enters the spirit
world through deep hypnosis, regardless of their ideology or what I
have told them in advance, their reports are going to be similar to
everyone who went before them.
I have been told by the LBL hypnotherapists I have trained that
they have had clients who never heard of me or my books who,
without prompting, have also been consistent in their reports of the
spirit world. The differences are in the soul activities they see clearly
and those that are hazy. No two sessions are exactly the same because
each soul has a specific energy pattern for recovering stored
immortal memories and their own unique history of existence.
If a potential client has reservations about metaphysical philosophy
due to a rigid belief system, this may have created an inner turmoil
that you must address at the outset. This person has contacted
you because they do want spiritual information about their higher
self and yet ideological reservations are holding them back. I often
find in such cases that underneath this mental conflict lies unhappiness
and dissatisfaction over how these individuals consciously view
the world and their lives. Such people have contacted you because
they have finally reached a point where they are willing to seek answers
by a new approach. In these circumstances, an eclectic therapist
can be a good sounding board for open-ended philosophical
discussions that are reflective, interpretive, and encouraging to the
potential client.
For example, in America, with our prevalent Christian society,
you might be told, “I want to experience what Heaven is like, but I
worry that I might be committing a sin by coming to see you.” Another
slant on this same question could be, “I think there is an afterlife,
but must one believe in reincarnation in order to be a candidate
for spiritual regression?” I have had clients from cultures
where there are strong convictions about life being deterministic,
giving them little control over their destiny. Other societies are openminded
about reincarnation and fate but their rituals involve the
existence of angry gods, evil spirits, and undesirable astral regions
after death. Some belief systems do not allow for a soul-ego that exists
in a spirit world between lives. Atheists and agnostics, of
course, find it hard to accept a higher power and a grand design in
the universe. As I mentioned, regardless of ideological preconceptions
in their conscious minds, once these people are in a superconscious
trance state they will have the same soul memories about
their life between lives as all your other clients.
Thoughtful people with diverse belief systems will contact you
because they are searching for meaning in their lives. They are looking
for a different sort of spirituality that is consistent and makes
sense to them. Once we separate out the extremists and their radical
doctrines, all religions have wonderful creeds of compassion, charity,
and love. Yet they are also anchored by centuries of institutional
dogma that does not appeal to modern thinking. In my view, the
world's great religions are too impersonal for many people. In a
sense these powerful religions have lost much of the essence of individual
spiritual contact with the divine which gave rise to their origins.
People are disturbed by this evolution.
The historian Arnold Toynbee stated that throughout the history
of humankind when a belief system outlives its attraction as a spiritual
model for people it is modified or discarded. We live in a
world that is perceived as chaotic. There are those who believe this
is of our own making, while others blame the Source that created us
and turn away from all faith. Over my years of private practice, I
have seen an increase in the number of people who are seeking a
new spiritual awareness that is individual and unique to them without
intermediaries who wish to impose their will on what they
deem is spiritual.
All of us have a tendency to be intolerant of people who don't
think as we do. For the spiritual regressionist, having bias toward
your own truths is natural but this should not cloud your receptiveness
to ideas expressed by clients. As a life between lives therapist,
you want to assist the client in reaching both understanding and
equanimity about their existence without imposing your values.
Everything the client needs to know is inside their mind. Whenever
possible you must allow them to first recognize and then interpret
their own memories. Your understanding and positive healing energy
is vital as you work to expose the client's inner vision of their
soul life. In this way you also facilitate alignment of the subject's
vibrational soul energy to the rhythms of their human brains.
I try to explain to my clients, who represent many philosophical
belief systems, that we live in an imperfect world in order to appreciate
perfection. We strive for improvement through free will and
change. Searching for inner wisdom is essential because unless we
find a personal inner knowledge beyond those institutional doctrines
developed by others long ago, we cannot truly be wise about
how to live our lives today on Earth.
Current truths are succeeded by higher truths in each generation,
and it is this progression of knowledge and acute awareness of ourselves
that is at the core of expressing our personal identity. As spiritual
regressionists utilizing the power of hypnosis, we are now
blessed with a new medium of therapeutic intervention. If you are
able to assist people in seeing the light of divinity within themselves
and foster self-discovery, then you will have made a real contribution
toward the ultimate enlightenment of our race.

PREPARATION
PA R T  T W O
FOR SPIRITUAL REGRESSION
Personal Demands on the
Spiritual Regressionist
At one of my workshops, I was discussing the effort required in
taking people to their life between lives. At the first break a
hypnotherapist came up to me and said, “Thank you very much for
your time, but I'm leaving. I now realize this work is just too difficult.
I have a nice, regulated practice. The hypnosis management requirements
of spiritual regression is just not an area of therapy I feel
equipped to handle.” I told this honest person it was a good thing
he recognized these concerns now rather than later.
There is no question that three to four hours of intense work,
juggling many balls at once, without rest, is demanding. Essentially,
you must contend with the simultaneous interaction of a client's immortal
soul and the mental processes of their current human brain.
These two egos may be conflicted by disrupted integration. An LBL
facilitator must cope with this duality of the client's mind while refining
and adjusting long phases of spiritual imagery to support a
comfortable passage. To do this you must constantly track their
mental journey through the geography of the spirit world. This is
called mapping.
The motivations, fears, self-image, and expectations of your
client will be determined by the physical, emotional, and mental
makeup of their host body. These elements of temperament are influenced
by what I call “the I signs of the soul”: insight, intuition,
and imagination. While your hypnosis subject is telling you about
their spiritual life, they are communicating this information through
their current mortal body. This can be both confusing and gutwrenching
for them. As the drama of the afterlife unfolds in the
mind of the client, their transpersonal view of the other side is affected
by how well they can face truths about their real self.
In addition to everything else, you will also be required to concentrate
on the many previous karmic experiences your client has
had in other bodies so they will comprehend patterns of cause and
effect that affect their life today. Practicing LBL therapy will increase
your past life regression skills greatly as you move from life
to life using the spirit world as a bridge. You may be required to alternate
both permissive and authoritarian hypnosis techniques
while shifting back and forth between the client's past lives, soul experiences,
and current life. Much depends upon their receptivity,
which may vary from past life to spirit world settings.
Your task as a spiritual regressionist is to help the client manage
their visualizations by allowing them to bring all this information
into focus so that they can see relationships by truly understanding
their soul and purpose in life and thus be empowered by their session.
As an LBL facilitator, this effort can be arduous and requires
both skill and tenacity. Certainly we don't engage in personal attachments,
but it is a cold therapist who does not feel compassion
and empathy for a client who may be going through a difficult time
recounting all the reasons why they are in their current body and
what their guides and masters have to tell them. No motivated, caring
hypnotherapist can remain detached in this work. After a demanding
spiritual regression session I usually find myself drained.
Clearing my head with hard exercise in the mountains helps me a
great deal.

Importance of Training and Experience
My LBL training classes have a mixture of licensed therapists and
certified hypnosis professionals. Typically, a substantial number
of hours in basic and advanced hypnotherapy training is required,
along with a few years of private practice. Having some
background in past life experience is of great benefit before tackling
the demanding work of a spiritual regressionist. One does not need
to be licensed as a psychologist, psychotherapist, or counselor to be a
skilled hypnosis facilitator. However, when working with troubled
clients, some background in counseling guidance is invaluable.
Ethically, therapists are expected to recognize their level of competence
and professional qualifications and not employ treatment procedures
that are beyond the scope of their training. To all practitioners
of spiritual regression who assist clients in seeking the truth about
themselves, I would say the more exposure to academic training and
professional experience, the better.
The issue of self-awareness is important to you as an LBL therapist
since it directly relates to your influence on the client. Your energy
is affected by your own intuition, motivation, and integrity. I
have great respect for Taoist philosophy. The Taoists believe that inspiration
occurs when one's conscious mind gets out of the way of
their natural unconscious energy. In a sense, our cosmic chi (energy)
is what brings harmony and clarity to the body. Having a keen internal
focus also makes you a better therapist.
The best regressionists have a perception that allows them to
know something without the use of conscious reasoning. These
therapists sense things at appropriate moments when working with
people. During LBL therapy it is possible for both facilitator and
subject to receive help from their respective guides, and these moments
should be recognized, especially in the behavioral areas of
making choices and problem solving.
I believe it is possible to train yourself to recognize and analyze
symbols which illustrate spirit-world experiences that cannot be defined
in a material way. These metaphors may be symbolic of something
on Earth that has applications to a visualized spirit-world
event. Frankly, there are times during a session when I feel I am
somewhat telepathic. This can be a hindrance when I don't consciously
block what I am thinking at critical moments with a client
who can pick up my thoughts.
I find daily meditation and controlled breathing to be helpful in
my LBL practice. In yoga, prana refers to the life force or energy
that is manifested in each of us through our breath. As a spiritual
regressionist, I manipulate my breathing at times during a session in
an attempt to extend my mind into a higher state of consciousness.
I may even enter into a self-induced light trance state to be more
open to the spiritual forces I feel around me.
Please understand that prana is not the breath itself nor the oxygen
involved with breathing but the energy connected to the breath.
It is a connection to the energy of all living things as a universal life
force. I have worked to train myself to seek the energy pathways
necessary to reach a particular client's mind while asking for help
from my guide and my subject's guide. I begin by opening my mind
and asking for guidance. In this way I try to receive information
and not send it. What I do send to my clients are messages of confidence
and reassurance.
The key to being a good therapist is to listen. Another is allowing
your client to first interpret their own metaphoric symbols based
upon what they are experiencing before you engage in your own interpretations.
There is a delicate balance between listening and
questioning. To know when to speak and when to be quiet is not
easy to teach students. In LBL work one must learn when to gently
assist a client in understanding a visualization after they have spent
time analyzing what they are seeing themselves. This comes with
training and practice, and along the way this exercise and your own
creativity may enable you to become more intuitive.

For Hypnotists Only

I'm fascinated by Michael Newton's work. This book is for hypnotists wanting to learn his approach to leading folks into the area between lives. Doing this type of hypnosis work is very intensive. Don't buy this book first... buy his others that take the reader through the journeys. Only then will you be ready to consider whether or not you may want to lead folks through this process. He does NOT teach you how to hypnotize. You must come to this book with that skill already. I'm glad he put this information down on paper before he himself moves on. He's a pioneer and I'm certain that others will add a lot to this information as the years go by. I believe that is what he intends to happen.

A Course Textbook
By R. Blake
There is no disputing Michael Newton's expertise in the area of spiritual regression. All of his books have proved to be invaluable additions to the growing body of literature on the subject--this book among the rest. I do, however, think some caveats regarding Life Between Lives are in order.

First of all, this book is not aimed at the general reader. Although it promises "new case material," there are only about four or five pages of new material. As stated in the Introduction, it is specifically intended for "experienced hypnotherapy professionals"--and, I might add, not just any experienced hypnotherapy professional, but particularly those familiar with past-life regression and possessed of a firm grasp of spirituality.

What experienced hypnotherapists might expect from a book written expressly for them is more specific guidance on how to navigate through the Life Between Lives (LBL) realm. It does provide guidance--the text is a remarkable outline of the different stations on the journey through the afterlife--but that guidance is often very sketchy. Do not expect to find a database of scripts providing detailed instructions on what to say to a client during a spiritual regression. Even a transcript of a complete series of sessions would be remarkably helpful in painting a picture of how LBL regressions should work. The book is more of a flow chart of possible pathways through the LBL realm, containing many good questions to help therapy clients expand their awareness of the afterlife and explore it thoroughly, but nevertheless leaving the reader with a vague sense of what a complete session should look like.

On its own, the book is not going to provide professional hypnotherapists with enough information to become spiritual regressionists, but I don't think the book ever had such a purpose. It seems to be more of a textbook to be used in conjunction with Newton's LBL Hypnotherapy Training workshops, for which all of Michael Newton's books are required reading. Considering how often the reader is obliquely addressed as an "LBL therapist," I think a strong case can be made that it was written with such a purpose in mind. Certainly, the LBL workshops might provide more of the nitty-gritty details that would breathe more life and vitality into this book.

The latest book in a brilliant trilogy
By Charles B. Duke
This book is the latest of three in Michael Newton's series on learning, via a specialized hypnosis technique, about his clients' memories of their activities in the "Spirit World" in between incarnations on earth or other worlds. These taken together have set a new standard of discipline in the study of memories embedded in the human psyche. They explore his clients' memories of their time in the spirit world in a structured Q&A format that identifies the activities and players in this world. These books have indices, appendices and the other accoutrements of reports of original research in the physical and biological sciences: except discussion and references to other works in this field. In my opinion, Newton's works are distinctly superior to to those of other authors in this field recently featured on Amazon like Brian Weiss and Robert Schwartz. Firstly, because he seeks to identify a systematic structure of the activities and events in what he calls the Spirit World rather than focusing on specific aspects of this world. Secondly, because he presents "real" client data in the form of edited transcripts of their sessions with him. Thirdly, because his books have usable indices. As the past editor of two physics technical journals and the author of nearly 400 technical physics, chemistry and engineering papers and member of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering, I feel I have some perspective on these subjects. I am waiting for a scholarly paper by him comparing his methods and results with those of others researchers like Weiss and Schwartz recently and their predecessors like Joel Whitten [Joel Whitten and Joe Fisher, "Life Between Life" (1986)].

Newton's trilogy, "Journey of Souls", "Destiny of Souls" and the present "Life Between Lives", taken as a whole is a five star plus on Amazons rating system. Taken together they redefine the standards of rigor and clarity in the description of what our human brains can access about events beyond our present lifetimes. This information clearly must reside outside our brains as these brains die with us. A possible technical narrative of how this can occur is given by Michael Talbot in "The Holographic Universe", also available on Amazon. From the perspective of Talbot's narrative, Newton is probing one small aspect of the fact that our brains are transceivers, constructing what we think of as reality out of signals in what electrical engineers call frequency space: the space of X-rays, radio waves as well as visible light that our eyes detect. Newton's hypnotic techniques allow our conscious brains to access regions of frequency space that our biological evolution sealed off during early childhood.

Sadly, as other reviewers have noted, this particular book seems to be supplementary reading for the Newton Institute's training course of budding Life Between Lives hypnotherapists. It is valuable in that context for training professionals or curious observers (like myself). For an individual new to this area of study or a casual reader, I suspect that its utility is rather low, unless the reader has already mastered Newton' other two books.

Bottom line: although Newton's books as a collection are five star plus, this book is likely to prove a disappointment to the average reader. Try "Journey of Souls". It is a great book that you will like much better.

From the Back Cover
Immediately upon its posthumous publication in 1953, Ludwig Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations was hailed as a masterpiece, and the ensuing years have confirmed this initial assessment. Today it is widely acknowledged to be the single most important philosophical work of the twentieth century.

In this definitive new en face German-English edition, Wittgenstein experts Peter Hacker and Joachim Schulte have incorporated significant editorial changes to earlier editions of Philosophical Investigations in order to reflect more closely Wittgenstein's original intentions. Notable revisions include the placement of Wittgenstein's notes – Randbemerkungen –  into their designated positions in the text, some corrections to the originally published German text, and the numbering of all the remarks in what was Part 2 and is now named Philosophy of Psychology – A Fragment. Extensive modifications and corrections have also been made to G. E. M. Anscombe's original English translation. Detailed editorial endnotes have been added to illuminate difficult translation decisions and to identify references and allusions in Wittgenstein's original text.

About the Author
Peter Hacker is the author of the four-volume Analytical Commentary on the Philosophical Investigations (Blackwell, 1980-96) the first two volumes co-authored with G. P. Baker (Second Editions, 2003, 2009) and of Wittgenstein’s Place in Twentieth-century Analytic Philosophy (Blackwell, 1996). He has also written extensively on philosophy of mind, including Philosophical Foundations of Neuroscience (Blackwell, 2003) and History of Cognitive Neuroscience (Wiley-Blackwell, 2008), co-authored with M. R. Bennett, and Human Nature: The Categorial Framework (Blackwell, 2007), the first volume of a trilogy on human nature.

Joachim Schulte edited the authoritative critical-genetic edition of Wittgenstein’s Philosophische Untersuchungen (2001). He is author of  Wittgenstein: An Introduction (1989), Chor und Gesetz: Wittgenstein im Kontext (1990), Experience and Expression: Wittgenstein’s Philosophy of Psychology (1993), and of many dozens of philosophical papers.

A Philosophic Monument
By Richard B. Schwartz
It is hard for me to imagine anything more presumptuous than my doing a review of LW’s Philosophical Investigations. As a general reader who lacks the background in Russell/Frege/Moore, et al. to contextualize LW’s thought, I can hopefully speak for the interested amateurs out there who are considering buying the book.

First, this is a scholarly edition. It presents the German text and the English translation on facing pages. The copy text, if you will, for the translation is that of G.E.M. Anscombe, but it is revised by P.M.S. Hacker and Joachim Schulte. Wittgensteinians study LW’s writings word by word, and some of the translation choices have been disputed. The book also contains endnotes and a substantial index. Considering the accumulated elements of apparatus and the density of the text, the price is a bargain. This is, after all, one of the most important books of 20thc philosophy.

It is, of course, quite skeptical of the philosophic enterprise. LW believed that the ‘problems’ of philosophy were essentially self-created and result from the constraints posed by language. That which we cannot speak of, LW argued, was what was truly important. The rest was a series of muddles. The book consists of two parts, the second renamed “Philosophy of Psychology – A Fragment.” The first consists (crudely speaking) of an extensive set of observations on language and communication, the second on perception and behavior. These observations are stated with great lucidity though we can feel the weight of reflection that stands behind them. We can also feel the weight of previous philosophic opinion, though LW is very sparing in his mention of other philosophers. His immediate predecessors are mentioned and he cites both Plato and Augustine (quoting the latter in Latin). He mentions William James, but on his predecessors he tends to remain silent. When he reflects on causality, e.g., he does not engage directly with Hume, though it is clear that Hume is in his thoughts. He anticipates much contemporary neuroscience, in, e.g., his discussion of the problems of ‘consciousness’, but he does not provide extensive references.

At a number of points (a very small number of points) he states his aims and his conclusions with great specificity:

“Philosophy is a struggle against the bewitchment of our understanding by the resources of our language” (#109).

“What I want to teach is: to pass from unobvious nonsense to obvious nonsense” (#464).

“A whole cloud of philosophy condenses into a drop of grammar” (#315).

And quintessentially:

“What is your aim in philosophy? – To show the fly the way out of the fly-bottle” (#309).

He is (expectedly) hard on psychology:

“The confusion and barrenness of psychology is not to be explained by its being a ‘young science’; its state is not comparable with that of physics, for instance, in its beginnings . . . . For in psychology, there are experimental methods and conceptual confusion. . . . The existence of the experimental method makes us think that we have the means of getting rid of the problems which trouble us; but problem and method pass one another by” (II, #371).

There are other memorable passages which I will allow the reader to discover for him- or herself.

I would describe this book as a necessary read for anyone interested in the history of philosophy and the course of modern thought. Even if one is not prepared to dissect it in detail, it is a pleasure to watch a brilliant mind at work, tracing an outline of thought that has been immensely influential.

A Good Excuse for Reading the Investigations Again
By Doctor Moss
It's more than a little presumptuous to attempt a short review of Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. After all, it's one of the few most important philosophical works of the twentieth century. This edition is sorely awaited by some, after years of close examination and criticism of the Anscombe translation.

First, the geeky stuff on the translation and editing. Like the Anscombe translation, this one with Hacker and Schulte joining their efforts to Anscombe's, presents the original German and the English translation on facing pages. As a reader with a spotty knowledge of German, this gives me the opportunity to refer to the original where the English seems obscure, ambiguous, or just plain impenetrable. If you're a student of Wittgenstein, Hacker and Schulte have helpfully addressed numerous, controversial aspects of Anscombe's translation -- many of these, such as the difficulty with the German "Satz" (translated relative to context by "sentence" or "proposition", two very different English words) and "Seele" ("soul" sometimes but "mind" others by context in English), are discussed in their Preface.

If you are a quasi-casual reader, many of these points of translation are probably less important than overall readability. And I think Hacker and Schulte have improved readability, updating the feel of Wittgenstein's writing, which is often colloquial, to something more modern.

They've also added over 20 pages of sometimes helpful footnotes, where additional information about the translation or about Wittgenstein's thoughts are enlightening. And they've recast "Part II" of the Investigations itself as "Philosophy of Psychology -- A Fragment" -- their reasoning for that is given in their Preface.

Like most great philosophical texts, no matter how many times I read the Investigations, it's different each time, and I feel foolish for having understood so little the previous time. The new translation offers a great excuse to give it another read.

There are many themes to pick up, including the great variety of linguistic behavior (as contrasted with naive views of language as representing or naming, or with Wittgenstein's own view in the Tractatus), the illusions of distinctive mental activities (such as "meaning" a word while uttering it, or translating the inner to the outer or public), and the general theme of philosophical problems arising when "language goes on holiday".

It's the last that continues to grab my attention, persistently through readings, with different remarks jumping out of the text each time. The simple view is that Wittgenstein thinks ordinary language (what we all say and do in practical contexts every day) is fine as it is, but that it's when we detach ordinary language from those practical contexts that we get in trouble. We fall into perplexing philosophical quandaries, supposing ourselves to really wonder whether the external world or other minds exist, or whether objects are material or ideal.

But philosophical exercises of language are exercises of language, after all. It's not as though we can simply say, "Don't do that" when philosophers speak, and point out that they've left the "ordinary" behind. It's not a simple mistake, and the line between the "ordinary" and the "philosophical" is crossed sometimes without special notice. And it's not even the exclusive province of professional philosophers (amateurs seem even more impressed than the professionals sometimes by their own metaphysical musings).

Certainly, there is more to say about the mistake that philosophers, amateur and professional, make. In particular, there is Wittgenstein's distinction between empirical remarks (remarks about facts in the world) and grammatical remarks (by contrast, remarks about how we speak or are to speak about those facts in the world). The philosopher mistakes the one for the other, thinking that, for example, by adopting what we call an idealist grammatical position (when we talk of objects in the world, we are really talking of mental or ideal objects) we have really discovered something about the objects and not just made a statement about how we should speak of them. Much more to say on this, of course -- which is why a short review is so presumptuous. In fact, it's Wittgenstein's thoughts on why we fall victim to such a misunderstanding that I puzzle most about.

Best of the best!
By Amazon Customer
The best translating of PI you can get in the world today! For people who study German but are not able yet to read the book direct from it, this is a opportunity to practise. I mean, the language used by Wittgenstein during his explanations is already very easy to reach, so it helps us a lot to identify the words and the grammar structures of the sentences in German, which are really well preserved in the translation too.
And, of course, just the fact that this translation is originaly made by Anscombe, friend of Wittgenstein, one of which was given the responsability of publishing his work in case that he died, that just makes the book trustrable. So, after the sequel of
revisions, we have now this one, the best improved of all.
