Good but...

Very good introduction book, but with some typos. I had read it first from my friend when I was starting up in finance. But bought it anyway because I thought it had some nice coverage on certain topics that are not well explained on implied in 99% of other books. For a startup person who is familiar with PDE and some probability theory the least can understand most of the subject matter. I would call this more of an "introduction book".

This book is as one reviewer said, is both practical and a reference. It brings to light concepts such as, why Swap rates and Forward rates canot follow a log normal process at the same time in a intutive and practical way. The derivation of the different model is not rigorous enough but one could obtain it from other books. On the whole a good buy but a little bit expensive.

Good but a little bit superficial

This is an excellent reference guide to interest rate option models, I used it extensively with Implementing Derivative Models (Wiley Series in Financial Engineering)while I was writing my masters thesis. Although it is a good reference, it lacks deep demonstration of how the equations are derived, throwing a lot of them assuming that the reader is an expert on the field. So in some models the book tends to be too superficial, but as I said it is an excellent reference of IR Option Models.

Written by a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has also authored a book on attention deficit disorder, Change Your Brain contains dozens of brain scans of patients with various neurological problems, from caffeine, nicotine, and heroin addiction to manic-depression to epilepsy. These scans, often showing large gaps in neurological activity or areas of extreme overactivity, are downright frightening to look at, and Dr. Amen should know better than to resort to such scare tactics. Five sections of the brain are discussed, and case studies clearly illustrate possible problems. The accompanying brain-scan photos are difficult to read with an untrained eye. Although Amen provides step-by-step "prescriptions" geared toward optimizing and healing the different sections of the brain ("create a library of wonderful experiences"; "try meditation/self-hypnosis"), 80 percent of the patients in his case studies were given medication to treat their behavioral problems. 17-hour sales advertisement w/ helpful points

I agree with the negative reviews that this book is more or less a 17-hour infomercial but it does have helpful tips or suggestions mixed in occasionally, and some of them are real gems which is why I still liked this book overall.

This book would be so much better if it focused purely on the science and what behaviors can be modified with actionable tasks/steps people can take (i.e. changing the questions they ask themselves, writing goals on paper, joining support groups)

The authors concept is this: Spend thousands getting your brain scanned, then spend hundreds on supplements he sells for your special kind of brain, and join a church.

That last part is true and helpful--not necessarily joining a church but forming bonds and strengthening human connection. Have a support system.

Of course changing your diet will help too, as most of his supplements work largely because of the forced dietary change.

This book was more than disappointing. It is basically a sales pitch for you to buy into Dr Daniel Amen's programs. It certainly was not worth the price. This book is his infomercial...with a price attached.

I liked the book and found it very readable

I liked the book and found it very readable. While it did contain a fair amount of useful information, I feel like the same effect could have been achieved in a far fewer words. As other reviewers have noted, it also seems to be a shameless promotion for Amen Clinics. You will be encouraged to access their website for more content. I found nothing useful there that wasn't subscription based. Just an FYI.

If I had it to do over again, I would've popped for the book version. Referring back to things that I would like to revisit is too klutzy on my Kindle.

Good resource

Having lost my husband, I feel a huge loss and void in my life. I was frantic to find some way to get through the abyss...and this book was recommended to me. Initially, I found the author to be very repetitive, so reading it was somewhat tedious. As I reached Touchstone Four, I noticed that what he was saying really spoke to me and described what I am feeling/dealing with pretty accurately. I realize now that Wolfelt's repetitive style is designed for people who are grieving and mourning, because the grieving process causes loss of concentration and decreased ability to retain information. You are numb with grief and yet your brain is in over-drive, so the repetition helps what he is saying to really sink in.

I am using this book as the "course outline and textbook", so to speak, for a bereavement group that I am attending. The book and it's accompanying journal are great for giving each member of our group focus on the tasks and issues at hand and keeping us from wandering aimlessly in the confusion of our grief. I have attended groups after other losses in my life, but this one is the best because it does have strong guidance and direction from both the author and our chaplain.

A friend of mine just lost his father...when I am finished with it, I think I will pass this book along to him.

One of the very best books on grief

I've recently completed an annotated bibliography of books on grief for the hospice where I volunteer. I read over twenty and if I were asked which one I'd recommend first, it would be this one.

One of the problems in writing a book is that you are writing to readers who are stressed, torn in different directions, and may have trouble focusing. So it's important to get a lot across in an accessible way. Wolfelt does this.

Each "Touchstone" is clearly discussed with concrete suggestions of how to work through it. The Touchstones more or less follow a chronological order, though he stresses the grief process is not linear, and that there are not stages that one works through, one, two, three.

Wolstone has written a companion book on keeping a journal and makes a number of suggestions of what might write. I know from personal experience how helpful writing can be in dealing with grief, though I am not oriented toward journals. If you are, I think it would be worthwhile checking out that book as well as reading this.

Understanding The Enemy

Of all the books I've read since my son was killed (and there are plenty), this one would be at the top of the recommendation list for the bereaved to read. It thoroughly covers every facet of grief that one will ever experience along the journey. For once, I had my own worst time of day acknowledged and explained. In our mourning-avoiding society, this book validates and fortifies the bereaved. In addition, Ph.D. Wolfelt adeptly and compassionately shows the way to integrate grief into a positive transformation toward a new life of hope as our loved ones would want us to live.

(Note: Knowing the nature of grief as it is, I suggest this book might be best read months after an intense loss. Otherwise you may find yourself reading each sentence or paragraph over and over trying to make sense of it due to the inherent lack of concentration caused by the severe assault to the mind as well as the heart. Where ever you are along the grief journey, it is never too late to read this book and begin proactive healing.)

New life for the Assassins!

YES! I cannot tell you how happy this book makes me.

Toni Aleo and the Assassins have returned and I’m so damn excited. You may be thinking….but the Assassins haven’t left…the last book Face-Off at the Altar was about the Assassins. Right? Well, when I say they’ve returned I mean Toni has revived this series for me in a big way. I was almost ready to say that it was time for me and this series to part ways.

Before you start burning things and throwing stuff my direction, let me explain…

I’ve been a fan of the Assassins and of Toni Aleo’s writing for a long time, but I don’t think I’ve made any secret of the fact that the Sinclair’s as a whole were not my favorite people (I’m giving a pass to Jace in that statement). I also hated Jordie Thomas with an unholy passion… I know a lot of people loved Jordie…he just ticked me right off… a lot. Let’s just leave it at I was starting to worry that the Assassins draw may have been coming to a close for me.

But, I have to give kudos to Toni. She has resurrected my love for the Assassins with this story of Vaughn and Brie. I am in awe yet again and my faith is restored. I loved this book from beginning to end. I’m not saying that Vaughn didn’t have his issues…don’t we all. But the whole background for this story was what convinced me to give the Assassins one more chance. And I’m so glad I did!

Brie is my newest favorite heroine. She is such a great character to read. She is what we should be raising our daughters to be. She holds herself to an incredibly high standard in her job, in how she takes care of her brother Rod and how she allows herself to be treated by others. The scene with the speed dating had me laughing out loud. There was a time or two that I thought she might have been edging into fighting her attraction to Vaughn a little too hard, but she never fell into where I thought she was just fighting it to be stubborn. She had some legitimate concerns.

Vaughn on the other hand, did actually make me cuss him out a few times. I get he’s not had the best history with people he’d chosen to trust, but it’s pretty obvious that Brie is nothing like the people in his past. I was a little irritated that he was ruining a fantastic thing with Brie just because he was gun shy. And he fought those feelings for Brie hard. Only the depth of his love for his brother and how he chose to express it was what kept the balance between what seemed like two separate personalities and ended up just making me love him more. But damn, that man is a stubborn bastard.

Like a lot of Aleo’s books, this book sets up a whole cast of new characters I can honestly say that I am looking forward to meeting again. I haven’t been this excited for a new book in this series since Laces and Lace. Fantastic writing, fun banter between Vaughn and Brie and a list of other characters who are lovable to the extreme. I’m not so patiently waiting to find out what happens from here. Delayed Call has breathed new life into this series for me.

Another great addition to the series

Delayed Call was the eleventh book in the Assassins series by Toni Aleo revolving around the Nashville NHL team.

Vaughn Johansson was the star forward with the killer wrister. He was gorgeous, the jokester and never took anything seriously. Yet, we found that he also had a heart of gold but he came with a ton of baggage.

Brie Soledad was the beautiful Assassins reporter that got under Vaughn's skin. Or was it that Vaughn got under Brie's skin...yea that too and they fought like cats and dogs.

True to Aleo's style, she sent us on a journey of discovery and healing before Vaughn and Brie could truly move forward. And for extra enjoyment, several of our favorite characters from the previous books made appearances.

The storyline was well written with well developed characters. The only major drawback was the editing errors. There were more than I felt was acceptable; focusing primarily on missing, extra or incorrect words.

Additionally, I liked the premise of the story but Vaughn and Brie were a little immature for me. Although they were NA so it was somewhat refreshing to see the lighthearted humor from an innocent age. Not my typical humor but it worked ok for me most of the time.

Within the storyline, Aleo tackled the tough subject of Down's syndrome including the challenges, affects upon the family, the ongoing decisions and the associated costs. It brought depth and complexity to the storyline. I'm not intimately familiar with Down's syndrome but it appeared realistic from a possible perspective. I would imagine in today's society that it could be a hot bed for abuse and fraud if the right options aren't thoroughly explored. Through Aleo's writing, I could feel Brie's anxiety over making the best long term decisions for her brother; yet to also stay within her budget and not send them into bankruptcy.

Lastly, I loved how Aleo intertwined plots from different series. You don't have to read them all in order to follow along, but it's a bonus to her loyal readers. It's like an inside joke. In Delayed Call, it took me awhile to realize that one of the subplots, Wells, Vaughn and Jensen's best friend, was one of those bonus treats. Wells ex was Matty, Audrey's troubling brother in Hooked by Love (book three, Bellevue Bullies). I'm expecting a book for Wells now, but I'm not sure which series we'll see it in or exactly how it will play out.

What was obvious was that Delayed Call was a total set up for Jensen and Wren, which I'm assuming will be the next book in the series. I'm not a huge fan of either one yet so I'm hoping they will get grit and strength once their own story is revealed.

All in all, Delayed Call was entertaining. I continued to enjoy Aleo's writing style and character development. Kudos to Aleo for adding another good story to the series.

5 He's Not Who He Appears To Be Stars!!!

I LOVE the Nashville Assassins and I LOVE this book!! This book centers around Vaughn Johansson and Brie Soledad and their love/hate relationship. You know what they say about those kind of relationships don't you? They're ON FIRE in the bedroom... and in this case, it's spot on!!! However, it takes a while for them to get to the bedroom...

This book moves at just the right pace for these two. They each have secrets they're hiding and/or dealing with and let me tell you there are times in this book that you'll be gutted. Vaughn in all his smart-mouthed ways has some history that only a few are privileged to know about and when it comes to Brie uses this to his advantage and knows what buttons to push with her and he does such a good job of it....

"You're weird around her. It's like you want to hate her, but you want to bang her - maybe even more than just bang and you don't like that."

Brie is so awesome in the way she handles Vaughn especially once these two get behind closed doors! She's smart, sexy, intelligent and has a heart of pure gold and he just doesn't know what to do with that. One of the things I loved the most about Brie is her relationship with Rodney her younger brother who needs to be cared for/monitored on a consistent basis. When it comes to Vaughn she doesn't let him get away with anything and I want to fist-bump her because of that. Even though he's amazing on the ice it doesn't give him license to not respect her or others...but we do get to find out why and how he is this way....and it blew me away!!!

Once there is an ignition for these two it's almost like they can't keep their hands off each other and at times I was rolling with them...Vaughn comes out of left field sometimes I'd sit here and think, "No, he didn't just say that...did he?" But he did Brie takes in stride.

Overall this another winner and dare I say Hat Trick for the Nashville Assassins series. Toni has captured these characters perfectly. This includes all the secondary characters, like Jensen, Wren, Wells and others and let's not forget Tricksie because she adds a whole different element to this story and it was the best!! I can't wait to see what happens in the future for this couple because their life together is going to be one heck of a ride!

I loved the book. It is well written and the author wrote it so that each character has many layers that keep you guessing what is going to happen next. I would recommend that a person who loves romance, read this book. Most women dream of finding a man like the main character, he has a side that most women would love to "fix".

Armin Navabi is a former Muslim from Iran and the founder of Atheist Republic, a non-profit organization with over one million fans and followers worldwide that is dedicated to offering a safe community for atheists around the world to share their ideas and meet like-minded individuals. Armin was born and raised in the Islamic Republic of Iran and was indoctrinated thoroughly in the Muslim tradition. I grew up with a strong sense of the existence ...

I grew up with a strong sense of the existence of the Christian God and I became a devout evangelical Christian. In my early 20's I decided to become a minister of religion with the Baptist Church. I completed 5 years of theological training and I served as a minister for some 17 years. The majority of my time was spent working as both a hospital chaplain and as a clinical counsellor ( for which I received qualifications).

My doubts took root in the suffering and traumas of life I witnessed, tried to address, and in my own psychological dysfunctions. I left the ministry in 1987, but it took me another 9 years before i rejected all my religious beliefs and the existence of 'God'.

I have a constant interested in reading and learning about the big questions of life - of science, philosophy and belief systems. I am sickened by violence and sexism evident across the world today and often encouraged by religious fanatics. I regret that it took me so many years to embrace atheism.

I have found so much help and support in Armin Navabi's book, "Why There Is No God". His explanations have reinforced my own convictions and given me some new insights to apply to my own life. I have especially appreciated the links to books, articles and internet web pages that are found in the pages of this book. "Why There Is No God" has launched me into new territory to explore.

Why There Is No God: Simple Responses to 20 Common Arguments for the Existence of God by Armin Navabi

“Why There Is No God" is a basic counterargument book to twenty popular arguments for the existence of “God”. Former Muslim from Iran and founder of Atheist Republic, Armin Navabi provides readers with an introductory-level book that can use more refinement and stronger analysis. There is a lot to like here but it has been done before and much better. This average 77-page book includes twenty chapters each covering an argument for the existence of “God” followed up by the author’s response.

Positives:
1. A brief, accessible book.
2. The fascinating topic of religion.
3. In general, I agree with all the conclusions made by the author.
4. The book is laid out fairly well; it’s very easy to follow. Each chapter covers an argument for the existence of “God” followed by a counterargument.
5. Unlike most atheist books this one ventures out to Islam as well. The author is a former Muslim and his background helps shed light to another form of belief.
6. Sensible quotes. “This is perhaps the greatest problem with the idea of complexity by design. Invoking a deity doesn't solve the problem of complexity; it introduces a new problem.”
7. Demonstrates inconsistencies in scripture.
8. Problems with supernatural causes. “Another problem with ascribing supernatural causes to mysterious events is that they are unfalsifiable, meaning that they can’t be disproved. Unfalsifiable claims hold no merit without evidence.”
9. The Morality of “God” questioned. “An all-loving god would surely not damn his children to an eternity of torture simply for being born into a culture that believes in the wrong deity, follows the wrong holy book or attends the wrong type of church services.”
10. Debunks the populum fallacy. “Simply stated, the truth is true even if no one believes it, and untrue claims are still untrue even if everyone believes them.”
11. The problem with confirmation bias.
12. The problem with subjective experiences. “The burden of proof is always on the person making a claim, not on the person that the claim is being made to. So in order for an individual's personal relationship with God to act as proof of God's existence, it's up to the person making this claim to substantiate it.”
13. The “god of the gaps” rears its unsubstantiated head. “God is used as an answer, but in reality, the issue of God simply raises new questions. You cannot solve a mystery by using a bigger mystery as the answer.”
14. So does “God” help people? “There is no evidence to suggest that God helps people. There is, however, ample evidence that people can help themselves and each other.”
15. Defining “God”. “If the word “god” can mean anything to anyone, then it essentially carries no meaning.”
16. At the heart of religion. “As there is no evidence that any of that is true, religion, in effect, is creating an imaginary problem simply so that it can sell an imaginary solution.”
17. Has atheism killed more people than religion? Find out.
18. The use of fear in perspective. “The idea that fear could drive you toward the belief in God only goes to suggest that religious claims are commonly fear-based and not rooted in actual logic or evidence.”
19. Interesting look at intelligence. “Intelligence relates to the way one processes information, not necessarily what she knows or believes.”
20. Science in perspective. “Science doesn’t claim to have absolute certainty about the world; it creates models that provide the best explanation based on the available evidence. If additional evidence is found, the model can be changed.”

Negatives:
1. There are better books on the market that cover this topic.
2. Low production value hurts this book.
3. Not always the best and strongest arguments for the existence of “God” and likewise not the strongest rebuttals.
4. Lacks depth and scientific rigor.
5. In need of a professional editor.
6. Nothing really new here other than some perspectives of his former faith.
7. Lack of charts, diagrams or any visual material.
8. Sources are provided but a separate formal bibliography is preferred.

In summary, this is an average, introductory book as atheist books go. There are better books on the market that cover this same topic with much more rigor and expertise. I like the idea and encourage the author to continue on his admirable and much-needed quest to educate the populace as I agree with the merit of his journey. Some good material here and his unique perspective is appreciated but would recommend more scholarship and rigor. Average book.

I liked it - Concise and Logical

I really enjoyed this book. Yes there are some typos but nothing too distracting. Experienced Atheists will find no new arguments here but they will find concise ways to counter arguments by Theists. Using logic and common sense the author easily refutes all the standard reasons that a Theist will use to rationalize their beliefs. Not really that hard since no Theist to date has brought forth anything compelling to back up their illogical beliefs. But it is nice to find all the ammunition you will ever need to dismantle the most ardent Theist in a small volume. And while it will help those that already disbelieve and those that are looking for credible ways to counter their already wavering belief in a non existent deity, it is not an anti Kool-Aid vaccine as evidenced by the many 1 star reviews by believers. And while some complain that it is too simplistic, I disagree. Since most arguments made in support of a deity are made by people who do not know better and have little ability to marshal any great thought or reasoning to the debate this volume accomplishes most if not all of what it apparently set out to do. It is also devoid of any mocking of Theists which is nice but much more reserved than I would have been. But for the typos I would have given it 5 stars.
