Years Later

I read this book during the lowest point in my life. Now that I look back, about 1.5 years later, it was the catalyst that put me on the road to recovery. A few minutes ago I was sitting in my room looking at my bookshelf and caught sight of the yellow spine. I thought, "Damn. I HAVE to write a review."

The most significant observation in the book is that happiness is the ultimate currency. It's so basic, and so true. All this stuff that we do in life is for the purpose of gaining happiness. When I realized that status, possessions, relationships and accomplishments have no intrinsic value, I began to rethink my approach to life. The funny thing is, I do just about the same things today that I did back then. The difference is my experience of them. For me, it was matter of changing the way I motivated myself. For you it will probably be something else.

I don't know if this self-help book is better than any other, but it was very valuable to me. If you are in need, read it and do the exercises. The results will not be instant, but hopefully it will start or continue something good in your life.

Practical advice but not a quick fix

Ben-Shahar presents the reader with a straight-forward, quick book that lays out the highlights of research into happiness and into what make us happy. The book, though, is more practicum than theory. Each chapter has exercises that help the reader put these ideas into action. I read the book straight through first and will go back to do the exercises. But already the insights that Ben-Shahar discusses have helped me to think differently about the nature of happiness and its relation to aspects of one’s life (such as work or the future).

Ben-Shahar's uses his own life experiences, hypothetical cases, and metaphors to concretize the theory. I particularly liked his quadrant of the rat-race, hedonism, nihilism, and happiness. This captures more of the nuance of what kind of life (or rather one's perspective on life) is more likely to lead to happiness.

Ben-Shahar's advice is practical and doesn't rely on quick fixes or some formula. It's intellectual work. It's about thinking about one's values and the hierarchy of those values: find out what is important and how to balance these in your life. It is also about finding the balance between past, present, and future. Living in the past or living for the future is not a recipe for happiness. One needs to be present, but can't forget their past or their future either. None of this is easy to do: but the pay off of a happy, fulfilling life is worth the work.

Tal Ben-Shahar is brilliant. And so is this book. His Positive Psychology class at Harvard was the most popular class on campus and, after reading his book, I can see why.

The book is really well written and PACKED with a great overview of why happiness matters along with scientifically supported Big Ideas and exercises to help us rock our greatest lives. Truly amazing.

About the Author

Victor M. Panaretos is Associate Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the Department of Mathematics of the EPFL. He completed his undergraduate studies in Mathematics and Statistics at the Athens University of Economics and Business and at Trinity College Dublin in 2003. He received a PhD in Statistics from the University of California at Berkeley in 2007, where he studied supported by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Award, and received the Erich L. Lehmann Award for an Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in Theoretical Statistics. He joined the EPFL as an Assistant Professor in 2007 at the age of 24, as the youngest ever faculty of the institution, and was promoted to Associate Professor and tenured in 2013, again the youngest to ever do so. He is the recipient of an ERC Starting Grant Award and an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute. He has given over 30 invited conference talks and 50 invited seminars. He has served as the Editor of Bernoulli News, and is an Associate Editor for the Annals of Applied Statistics, Biometrika, and the Electronic Journal of Statistics. He is a member of the Publications Committee of the Bernoulli Society for Mathematical Statistics and Probability.

About the Author
Madhu Viswanathan is an Associate Professor of Marketing in the Department of Business Administration within the College of Business at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, where he has been on the faculty since 1990. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration (Marketing) from the University of Minnesota, and a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He teaches a course on measurement and research methods to Ph.D.. students and marketing research to undergraduate and MBA students. He has been listed several times as an excellent instructor at the University of Illinois. His research has appeared in journals, including the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Journal of Consumer Psychology, the Journal of Marketing Research, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and Computer, Speech, and Language. His research is in two areas: measurement and research methodology and low-literate buyer and seller behavior. His work on literacy has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, and the Illinois Center for International Business Education and Research. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Consumer Psychology, the Journal of Consumer Research, and Psychology and Marketing. He has served as the Secretary-Treasurer for the Society for Consumer Psychology and as the Chair of the Consumer Behavior Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association. He also chaired national conferences for the American Marketing Association and the Society for Consumer Psychology. He directs the Marketplace Literacy Project (www.marketplaceliteracy.org), a nonprofit organization which aims to disseminate knowledge about low-literate buyer and seller behavior. Its activities include the development and distribution of educational materials for adult education, nutrition, and other programs targeted at low-literate consumers in the US, and development and provision of business and consumer literacy training for low-literate, low-income adults in India and other similar contexts. He lives in Champaign, Illinois, with his wife and 10-year old son.

This book has helped me significantly with my dissertation (I'm testing a structural model of focal-firm and key-supplier collaborative capabilities in complex B2B markets). It's well organized, lucid, and thorough. Anyone conducting research in the social sciences should have a copy on one's bookshelf.

Highly recomended

by far the best book on the subject, easy to understand and follow the examples. The data sets are on the authors web site, so you can do the statistical analysis yourself. I have experience with many psychometric books and i find this one best suited for me. im dealing with systematic error and all of the other textbooks just glance at the issue - nunnaly 1994, crocker/alagina, gulliksen, magnusson, anastasi, goodenough, lord etc. This book is so far the best at (detailed and easy) developing the concepts of error in measurement. a must.

Real insights for the pros and highly skimmable for students

Knowing the author's credentials in this field, I expected this book to be good, but not this great.

For those who have used scales and measures over the years, this really has some eye-opening insights.

What I really liked are the figures, tables, and flowcharts. About 75% of the meaning of the book you can get through these modalities.

I plan on using this in a graduate methods class next fall. Even if a grad student just skims the graphics, they'll have learned an incredible amount.

This can't help but be a classic in this field.

The abyss of passion

There are situations when sensibility reaches its limits. Then, exploring beyond those limits becomes a very dangerous yet necessary venture. Peter Shaffer showed us a beautiful story of such exploration. The story where unbearable and inevitable are the two sides of the same coin. I enjoyed it deeply.

After watching this movie, it stayed in my mind for days. I kept thinking about what the psychiatrist said about having passion in life, whether it be from a disturbed mind or a middle-aged burnt-out psychiatrist. Oh, I know I'm getting it all wrong. You'll have to see the movie. It really makes you think.
Richard Burton and Peter Firth give once-in-a-lifetime performances, ones that I will always remember.

About the Author
The late Kären Matison Hess, PhD, wrote extensively in law enforcement and criminal justice, gaining a respected reputation for the consistent pedagogical style around which she structured each textbook. She co-authored multiple editions of MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISION IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION, JUVENILE JUSTICE, and INTRODUCTION TO LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE in addition to CONSTITUTIONAL LAW AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM; much of her work and influence remains unchanged in this new edition.

Christine Hess Orthmann holds an M.S. in criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati and has been writing and researching in various aspects of criminal justice for over 20 years. She is the author of numerous Cengage Learning textbooks, a former reserve officer with the Rosemount (Minnesota) Police Department, and a member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS), the American Society of Criminology (ASC), the Text and Academic Authors Association (TAA), and the National Criminal Justice Honor Society (Alpha Phi Sigma).

Henry Lim Cho holds an M.A. in Human Services with an emphasis on Criminal Justice Leadership from Concordia University, St. Paul, Minnesota. He has worked in the field of criminal justice for more than 10 years, having held positions in private security and as a community service officer, police officer, and detective. He retired from the Rosemount (Minnesota) Police Department with the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Cho has experience as a use-of-force instructor and as a crime scene investigator. His professional memberships include the Text and Academic Authors Association, Minnesota Police and Peace Officer's Association, International Association of Identification--Minnesota Chapter, Minnesota Sex Crimes Investigator Association, High Technology Crime Investigation Association, National White Collar Crime Center, and the Fraternal Order of Police. He co-authored POLICE OPERATIONS and INTRODUCTION TO LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE, and has been published in the Minnesota Police Journal.

For a used textbook, it is in excellent condition

Unfortunately, I had to drop the class. Hopefully they'll still be using the same textbook in the Fall of 2017. I loathe to sell it back for half of what I paid for it! Plus, I can read ahead. It seems very interesting as far as I got. I'm excited about being able to take the class again.

About the Author
Introducing Michael and Debi Pearl Michael and Debi Pearl have been married since 1971. They have 5 children and 21 grandchildren. Between them they have authored 14 books and 8 booklets which combined have sold millions. Much of what they write deals with marriage, child training, and homeschooling. When he is not teaching the Bible or speaking to audiences on how to have a good marriage and obedient children he is teaching kids how to stick a bull s eye with a knife or hawk. As a teenager, dressed in tie-dye tee shirt and long drooping peasant skirt, she stood on the highways and byways sharing the gospel and seeing miracle after miracle of God s amazing grace.  She married her life mate, Michael Pearl, in 1971.

Excelente libro sin desperdicios, una muy buena herramienta para puntualizar y profundizar en lo que Dios nos ha ordenado en su planta de que debemos ser ayudas idóneas para nuestros maridos, ejemplos vivimos que te permiten reflexionar sobre tu matrimonio. Lo recomiendo para mujeres próximas a casarse y para esposas también.

Bough it in spanish for my mom to read and I also ended up reading it. It's an amazing book with great advice on being a wife. Debi Pearl is absolutley a wise woman.

This book saved my life

This text is an excellent introduction into the world of EMC. It provides valuable knowledge, rules of thumb, and techniques garnered from decades of experience in the agency certification arena.
While the book's focus is mainly on FCC certification for notebook computers I found it easy to relate with the DO-160D guidelines I was attempting to meet.
Terrell and Keenan provide the reader with as nice a read as the material inside. For an engineering text it is wonderfully written and provides brief moments of wit and humor that make it very easy to move through.
Overall I highly recommend this text.
